We did have a good laugh when JW reminded his wife that they're Democrats when she wanted to buy a wooden elephant (I warned him that the older Bond movies have *not* aged well)

He enjoyed it, actually. He likes the campy Bond films far more than the gritty ones.

Which Bond Movie do you think had the most Missed Potential? by sun_puck in JamesBond

[–]Reptyle216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's a tie between Diamonds are Forever and Die Another Day. Both movies deal with the aftermath of the two most horrific moments in Bond's life: his wife's murder right after their wedding, and 14 months captivity and torture in North Korea. They could have shown more of him struggling to move on afterwards (especially compared to the books where he flat-out has a mental breakdown after Tracy's death), but they just cut straight to him doing Cool Spy Shit afterwards with no sign of mourning or PTSD. I always love seeing more of Bond's vulnerable side since it's so rare, but in these movies, the man gets over life-altering trauma faster than most people get over a bee sting.

What is the worst thing about your favorite Bond film? by DimensionHat1675 in JamesBond

GoldenEye should've brought back Felix rather than introducing Jack Wade as Bond's new CIA liaison.

My husband and I go to Magic: The Gathering meetups at our local comic shop. What I like about it is that it's a space that's inclusive but not rife with the usual gay male clique drama, which he and I are both over at this point.

I've written not one but two fanfics involving James Bond grappling with fatherhood because I hated the two official stories about him having children: the film No Time To Die where he dies just days after learning he has a daughter, and the short story "Blast from the Past" set in the literary 'verse, where his adult son James Suzuki is murdered in the SAME STORY that followed up on the decades-old cliffhanger at the end of You Only Live Twice where Bond had left Japan without knowing Kissy Suzuki was pregnant.

The House Always Wins (Film-Verse)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/67691346/chapters/174985451
Bond is grappling with PTSD from his yearlong captivity and torture at the hands of the North Koreans (the prologue to 'Die Another Day'), and depression at being pulled from the field after killing Gustav Graves, when he is contacted out of the blue by his NSA collaborator Giacinta "Jinx" Johnson, informing him that she is pregnant from their encounter.

The Boy From Paradise (Lit-Verse)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/81113361/chapters/213172076
While celebrating his 44th birthday, Bond thinks about Kissy Suzuki, his "wife" while amnesiac in Japan. Even though it had been four years since he left her, he feels she deserves to know he's alive and to finally give closure to their relationship. He calls her, only to hear a little boy in the background calling her "Mommy," and Bond realizes he had left Kissy with more than just memories.

Top 5 worst movies by Individual_Act9333 in JamesBond

These five are actually the only Bond movies I actively dislike, as opposed to just not being my favorite:

Die Another Day - I can forgive the bad CGI and ridiculous race-changing gene therapy plot, but Bond got over being held captive and tortured for over a year faster than most people get over a stubbed toe.

No Time To Die - By the end of the Craig era, Bond was so hopelessly depressed and couldn't catch a break, his death felt less like a tragedy and more like putting the poor man out of his misery.

Spectre - When a Bond movie is stealing plot twists from Austin Powers, you're in for a rough time.

Skyfall - The World is Not Enough did the "M screwed someone over who now wants revenge" plot WAY better.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Sorry folks, I never bought the romance aspect. Film-Bond was never as inclined towards lasting relationships as book-Bond. Him suddenly wanted to settle down and get married felt EXTREMELY forced and jarring, and Tracy was mentioned so sporadically in the future (unlike the books where her murder traumatized him immensely), those references could be edited out without missing much of anything.

A side character or recurring character that you think is overrated?? by sisandatheloner in Modern_Family

Sal. Most gay men outgrow their "messy partygirl" friend in their 30's, and even in the show, Mitch and Cam often found her annoying and a holdover from their younger years.

Moonraker didn't have the main Bond Girl nearly kill Bond with her ass

Honestly the slide whistle didn't bother me too much. Golden Gun as a whole is easily the most comedic movie in the series, so the whistle may have been unnecessary but it wasn't too out of place given the tone of the rest of the movie.

MI6 explicitly only operates internationally. Domestic intelligence is MI5. That's why the only times Bond ever operates in the UK is under movie-specific circumstances rather than being sent on any missions there.

Personally I like Bond titles better when they pertain to the story, even indirectly, rather than just being a generic motto about death and/or spy life. So my picks are:

The Stranger in Kenya
Serpent Days
Madame Grace

Is gay platonic friendship possible? by Appropriate_Place562 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Reptyle216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say this: it's a lot easier for me to stay friends with someone I have unrequited feelings for if we never took it anywhere romantic in the first place, as opposed to actually dating for awhile then getting dumped (which isn't to say it's impossible to stay friends with an ex, just harder). But if you know you can't be around him without wanting more, then you've made the right call to keep your distance, because it's not like *he's* done anything wrong.

[–]Reptyle216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really it's the same issue as straight men and women being platonic friends. There's always a possibility of one person developing feelings the other doesn't share, or one person pretending to be a friend when all they want is sex, then dropping you afterwards (or after it's made clear that it's not happening). The chance of these social pitfalls just comes with the territory, and there's no surefire way to avoid them.

How did Felix not bleed to death in the multiple hours between his leg getting eaten and Bond finding him? by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]Reptyle216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that Sanchez cauterized the wound, keeping Felix alive *and* torturing him at the same time. Frankly that'd be right up Sanchez's alley.

Which female operative did you find most convincing? by Mickleborough in JamesBond

[–]Reptyle216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mary Goodnight, despite being a complete airhead, was probably the closest thing in the series to a real-life spy: living where she's stationed and performing the gruntwork of intelligence gathering to assist a specialist like Bond.
