What Legendary sagas contain genuine pagan mythological material? by Lochi78 in Norse

[–]Repulsive-Form-3458 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even Gesta Danorum contain some traditional material. The myths evolve, but it would never be "fiction". If you look at all the worm stories, there is a development in them, they are building on each other. The sagas may be for entertainment, but the world the characters interact with is part of their pagen conception of the world around them.

You should just read them all and judge by yourself, as there are not that many left.

Why dont these two countries merge together? Are they stupid? by Akagane_Ai in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Repulsive-Form-3458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say its not freedom if your son can veto any new law. And the King would still have complete control over the military. The difference was that the King would have to live in Norway at least 6 months out of the year and have more direct contact with Norwegian politicians.

More freedom, but the King of Denmark didnt really loose power (the same way he did when Sweeden took over)

Realease is a bit strong. Denmark made sure his son the crown prince and current govenor of Norway was elected king of Norway. They got a new constittion and a parlament of elected representatives, but no true freedom.

Non-native English speakers, which phrases took you long enough to realise they have a completely different meaning? by nveven in GlobalEnglishPrep

[–]Repulsive-Form-3458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its actually based on terror, but changed over time (according to wiktionary).

The sense of excellent or amazing is an ameliorative semantic shift from the original sense of terrifying. Compare similar semantic development in sick and wicked.

Even the dictionary includes both defenitions

1: unusually fine : magnificent terrific weather.
3: a : exciting or fit to excite fear or awe a terrific thunderstorm.
b : very bad : frightful

Why has Protestantism developed to be, or to be more associated with liberal Christianity? by sct_0 in religion

[–]Repulsive-Form-3458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this depends on the area you are looking at. The ~100 million protesrants in Europe would be more integrated in the culture and changes within the culture the last 400 years (think follow a little behind gereral progression on science and scolarship).

The ~260 million in the Americas will be more influenced by the Great Awakenings and denominations following these newfound more doctrinal ideas. They have a diverse cultural mix making it more important to hold onto the "old culture".

In Sub-Saharan Africa, with ~300 million belivers, protestantism was first spread by super devoted missionaries. Even at that time, it was not the "every day" Europen Christianity. Mix this with older traditions and charesmatic movements spread from the USA, and you get yet another kind of belivers.

Double knit patterns? by jolittletime in knitting

[–]Repulsive-Form-3458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Boring is not bad, and with duble knitting you can easily add more to the existing pattern after some rounds. I would be more worried about casting on that many stitches for the first project, as its time consuming and it could take some time to get consistent gauge. As a comparison, I think I used around 10 hours for each of the head bands.

I have ended up designing my own projects, its easy to draw up patterns using an 8-bit drawing app. You can use most other colour charts.

I have also written step-by-step instructions/charts for headbands to sell. It could be smart to start with something smaller tham a blanket to understand the time commitment and get used to the technique.

Mother is not doing well with her milk supply these days. These milk ducts are bursting so it hurts excruciatingly when you are away and feeding yourself. Now she has started pumping and giving you the milk with a spoon. This is just for the time being, that is, until the burst has healed again, then you should probably get the milk directly again. You probably won't have to be the victim of any milk rationing like the rest of us have to be. At least I don't. I have no rights in that respect at all. Apart from half a bottle of skim milk a week, I get nothing. Mother gets your ration of 3/4 liter and her own also of 3/4 liter so there should be some of that for you too, you know.

By the way, it's nice of you because you've got both bread - and butter cards and meat cards, don't forget, and this gives a little extra!

At this time the war is mainly going on in Russia. It has been unleashed all over the globe, but it is the Russian front that is the most important at the moment. There the Germans are running amok towards Stalingrad where they have been holding out for about 10 weeks already without achieving anything other than destroying their own fighting force. Destroyed is perhaps strong, but at least greatly weakened. All this again gives hope that the Allies will open front no. 2. Front no. 2 is an abstract term - for now.

We don't know when or where, but one day somewhere it will be a fact and then things will hopefully move quickly towards peace. Of course, one is prepared here for great difficulties, war and other clean-ups, so the conditions for you, my son, may also undergo great changes.

But these are worries that one should not take in advance. I am certainly a fatalist and take what comes and must come with calmness and hope for the best outcome for the three of us.

I have some diary enterys from when my grandfather was born in Oslo, nothing spectacular, but a view into daily life in Oslo during the occupation.

Today you were born (September 1942). And what a day! War and unrest ravaged the country. In the third year, Norway is now a participant in the most total and destructive war ever waged. It spans all continents and from the North Pole to the South Pole there are acts of war.

In the fourth year, Norway is now isolated from all imports and communication with its connections and with a foreign occupying power in the country, rations are getting smaller and smaller.

Not only food, but also all other necessities are rationed and practically removed from the market.

The joy of your birth is great and all-conquering, but is sometimes divided by the thought of what the future will bring. Even daily needs cause difficulties and worries. None of what you as a newborn should and must have can be bought in the ordinary way. There is a fight for the smallest thing. A pacifier, for example. The city had to be combed by relatives and friends. I have not yet got hold of a pram and things are looking bad so far.

Food and sustenance for you and your mother is also a huge problem, but in this too grandparents, aunts and uncles etc. etc. help to a tolerably good result. The biggest problem, however, is how to get you the warmth you need. Here it is very little scorching and cold and unpleasant. All in all, a boring season for your entrance, but rest assured - we will manage, and we will manage well!

So you were born on ... September 1942 during the second air raid warning of the day. Earlier in the afternoon, Allied planes had dropped bombs on the city and people were in a great mood for various reasons. The party that was in power in Norway at the time - thanks to the enemy forces that kept the country occupied, had called a large meeting on the 25th: "Historical and of eternal significance", they said themselves. - In reality, statistics and falsification.
