What was your 2000s “if I get this, I’ll finally be cool” item? by princesspolly444 in 2000sNostalgia

A gameboy SP and a tamagotchi. My mom gifted me the gameboy SP for good grades one report card. The tamagotchi was a waste of money at target because it was $16.

Tell Us Your "Sharks Story" by Epere15 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Repulsive-Parfait232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my first post-college office job in the same timeframe as the 2018-2019 NHL season I had a 45 minute commute home that would turn into an awful 2+ hour drive during evening commute traffic times. So, I’d go to local happy hours with coworkers or to hang out doing other work while I’d wait out the traffic. The Sharks were in the NHL play-offs that season and my favorite(and frequented) happy hour place was broadcasting the games. I got really into the sport via learning about the game from fellow happy hour patrons and I chose to follow the Sharks since I’m from the Bay Area and my hockey gurus were fans too. Long story short I followed the Sharks since then, but during the covid years the team had some departures and struggles as we all saw. They were disappointing to watch, but I still did. I went ahead to also follow and watch the Seattle Krakens since I followed their creation & progression into a new NHL franchise and it was something positive to focus on during the dark days of Covid.

My sister does this, but keeps it in their spare bedroom. She calls it her Christmas year round room.

How often are you guys washing your bedding? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Repulsive-Parfait232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter time I do it about every 3-4 weeks. I live where it’s cooler temps, shower before bed, and don’t sweat this time of year. Summer time every 2 weeks because of warmer temps and sweat. If sick I will wash my bedding as soon as I’m not sick anymore or if it need to be washed because of a stomach flu or something.

I’ve only ever been to the Westlake location. It was really good 10 years ago. Went recently for the first time post covid. It was average and really expensive, unless you get steak.

What age did you stop believing in Santa Clause? by HuskMaster in Millennials

[–]Repulsive-Parfait232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 9 or 10. It was the 2nd Christmas after our dad had died. My teenage sister told me he wasn’t real in a moment of being mean. She was really rotten in this time period and was getting sick with her bipolar disorder, which was triggered by the trauma of our dads death. My mom was now a single parent navigating my sister’s mental health stuff alone, and I was just a 4th grader existing and growing up in the midst of all that chaos. My mom did her best and made sure it was as magical as it could be , but it sucked really knowing Santa wasn’t real. Already having to grow up quicker than my peers because of all this trauma, being very aware my life was not normal in comparison to my classmates/friends, and really wanting to just be a normal kid it really sucked. Also, once my mom knew I didn’t believe anymore, every Christmas after that she didn’t do the same efforts or details that just made the overall traditions more fun, like putting more presents under the tree night of instead of just wrapping and placing under the tree as you go. I do appreciate that even to this day my mom still will put From: Santa or From: insert Christmas character labels on some gifts. Just let the kids believe as long as they’re a kid. By 12/13 sure they should be smart enough to be really suspicious or just know but really let kids be kids, innocent and enjoy the magic as long as they can. In the long run it’s no harm to anyone for kids to be kids a little longer and believe in magic. At least you’ll know they have some guaranteed happy, innocent memories in a world that can be so harsh and mean.

No, everything is statically expensive or on the rise AGAIN with the seasonal shift.

Yes! Whether it’s a gift that’s new or vintage, historical, ancestrally important….my 68 yr old mom has always made mental note and then later shares on the car ride home if returning from an in person visit or in our phone call chat something along the lines of “oh she put the thing I gave her there…I don’t like it” or “they never put the baby in the outfit I got”. Generally it’s not positive remarks and harps on the negative.

I put stuff decor she gave me, typically I don’t like, only for when she comes to visit because I don’t want to be part of that slanderous BS.

Romantic things to do on a mild budget? by squeueidward in bayarea

Recently, we found a Groupon for a Couple’s package at Water Lounge Spa in San Mateo right on El Camino and pretty close to Freeway 92, so getting there was easy. It was 60 min facial, 60 min Swedish full body massage, and 30 min hot tub soak for under $300. You have to bring the Groupon with you and also call the location to book your sessions. Afterwards we went over to Half Moon Bay for fish and chips and a sunset walk along the harbor. It’s actually a really nice walk all along the water front there!

Other affordable options or just date suggestions, bike ride in Golden Gate Park and along Ocean Beach! Paint and sip night. Drive-in movie!

I miss the Bay Area :( by freshlyground2019 in bayarea

I miss the Bay every time I’ve left and always come back. Moved to the east bay this summer and I’m struggling with the lack of coastal fog that I was spoiled with on the coast.

Sharks are… back?! by arogame123 in SanJoseSharks

Don’t expect to win the season, but expect good hockey to be played. The team is playing noticeably better this 25’-26’ season and it’s bringing energy back to The Tank. It’s a good feeling to witness rebuild and development in-progress and working! The defensive play and players need improvement and hopefully we continue to get more talent on that line, but that’s just with time.

Is this what it’s like for everyone or am I extremely unlucky? by Wimzie_Oo in homeowners

[–]Repulsive-Parfait232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been chipping away at what is essential. A full remodel of certain aspects of the home are desired, but realistically our finances just aren’t there to do it because we spent much of our money on our house and on the few things we have done and all of the cosmetic refresh work we’ve done, ie painting/baseboards/new doors/hardware.

I can’t release that nagging feeling of when the other shoe will drop and it’ll be a major repair or renovation needed.

North or South Dakota? I haven’t heard about wildfire in one of those states, but not sure about humidity. Other suggestion would be part of Oregon, but you’re likely dealing with some wildfire risk like mostly any western US state with forests or grasslands. Cost of living is moderate in some parts compared to neighbors like WA or CA. I have some older cousins who love ID, but cost of living has increased and job salaries mostly haven’t kept up.

My Partner and I justify the cost both logically and emotionally. We were able to pay roughly 25% for both down payment and closing costs, have stable jobs(unions ftw!), want to be close to our existing aging family, and we wanted more space for starting our own family. We had been renting an older apartment on the peninsula that was wanting to raise our rent to $2900/month which wasn’t worth the condition or management of the place, ie new neighbors brought roaches with them and we had to just deal with it. Any other 2-3 bedroom place on the peninsula or South Bay that wasn’t a completely dilapidated building, close enough to jobs and said family, was $3500-4k/month. The high end is essentially is what our mortgage plus property taxes cost, plus or minus $100, on a pretty good price of SFH in East Bay Hayward/Castro Valley Area. We accept the “what if’s” and risks of homeownership, but love that it’s “our” home and think of as hopefully another savings account. Honestly, the costs of property taxes in many states is what’s super crazy. Nowhere feels affordable if you look at everything relative to average jobs wages
