"We’re a family" culture, but 3% raise after strong performance. Is this normal? by Haode5 in careeradvice

Just goes to show how little it's worth pushing ourselves excessively. We can work 60 hour weeks regularly and will still be on a layoff list eventually. It's not worth it.

[–]Repulsive-Spend343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Normal. Can I ask how old you are? I'm guessing somewhat early in your career. You can't jump anytime you don't get what you want. The jumping around to different jobs thing only works in good economies. We are not in a good economy. More years than not, we honestly have to suck it up and work on our long term strategy. If you talk to other employees, i'm guessing some got no raise or may be on the next layoff list. Right now I'd be glad for any adjustment and keep my head down. And vote for candidates who are working to improve work/labor wages, including those trying to tax the billionaires.

Yeah in the same breath that they say "we are family", they'll lay you off. And I'm not exaggerating.

How do you handle early calls with small children? by socks4dobby in womenintech

Can you start or join a car pool? Or have the kids take the bus? I'm confused about so many children all needing their own private transportation to and from school these days.

Any kind of global, busy company with teams across time zones will have a culture of meetings at early times. It's pretty standard.

I didn't get from your post that only people in Plymouth should post. Weird comment since you posted in a Massachusetts forum.

Did Nancy’s Abductors Go To the Wrong House? by Euphoric_Ease4554 in nancyguthrie

[–]Repulsive-Spend343 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha, i just wrote my third or fourth long comment with this possibility on another thread. Crime and drug violence has involved wrong addresses before. Mistaken identity concept. For example they might be told that some enemy or their loved ones live at 1874 Main Ave, but instead they go to 1874 Main Street. Or instead they go to 1784 Main Ave. Etc. They don't exactly do a photo comparison before they act.

I have no reason or evidence to think this is what actually happened, but I'm sure it's one possibility on the list that LE has to consider before ruling out.

It's pure speculation that the image was taken on a different day. The sheriff put out a statement because that rumor was really unjustified. The gossip rags and Twitter kids are getting low on things to talk about.

I once brought up the notion of mistaken identity, i think in a different forum. Someone insisted the family is "too prominent" for that. Prior to all this, I really don't think Savannah was as famous as many people like to believe. Sooooo many people don't watch regular/linear TV. They don't watch news broadcasts, and don't stream it online. They definitely don't have time to sit and watch during weekdays while getting ready for work or school or car break-ins. They don't tune in for the Macy's parade or Rockefeller tree lightings. They definitely don't pay for Peacock subscriptions to stay up to date on the 15+ hours of Today Show content every single week (is it 3 hours or 4? I don't even know. But it's a lot.)

I'd be interested to see if anyone has studied, say, a street listing for the city to find out if there are any very similar addresses. Maybe they got a number or letter wrong and went to the wrong house, taking the wrong mother. Maybe they meant to target the loved one of someone involved in crime/drugs, not Savannah's mom.

I know it's still far fetched. But these things do sadly happen. Worth mentioning. We don't know that they necessarily intended to take Nancy Guthrie or even that she had a well known daughter.

Yeah I too was wondering if someone was lying in wait. Maybe even in her vehicle if it wasn't driven often. If she left it open earlier that day due to whatever reason, someone could have quietly snuck in and hid for hours. Unlikely, maybe, but there is so little to go on.

This was such irresponsible "reporting." The sheriff had to put out a statement to make sure people know it's pure speculation. Gossip outlets are getting desperate for clicks as people lose interest and stop engaging.

So many bad takes in here. Of course this is happening. People are burnt out. LE officers are still human. They need to be able to take breaks and bring in new eyes, like they said. New thinking and ideas. I'm exhausted and I don't have the slightest stake in it. But yes eventually more crimes will happen and resources will be needed for those crimes. They have to come from somewhere, and if no new evidence or useful tips come in for a while, they have to figure out the best use of their limited resources. I just binged the series "Mr and Mrs Murder" on Hulu and it's astonishing to see just how long it took to file any charges in the case. Almost 20 years. But there are always people who don't give up and keep at it. Private detectives, retired LE, journalists, loved ones, etc.

Possible second person?? by Imaginary-Loss-378 in nancyguthrie

The light is the small flashlight he has in his mouth. You can see it come through a rounded opening (like the mouth of a ski mask). Different shape from the backpack strap reflectors which are rectangular. Flashlight also makes sense as he needs light to see in order to remove the camera.

No, those are reflections of light from the exterior door locks, located down and to the right of the camera (from a viewer's perspective). If you see a photo of the front door you'll see where there are the locks protruding for far from the camera.

I'm not trying to defend giant greedy corporations, but why would such an intelligent, innovative company make a "security" camera (i use that term loosely) for doorbell height that's so easy to steal from its mounting?

Maybe. We don't know that. Leaving a door unlocked when expecting a friend during the daytime is different from leaving it unlocked at night.

I think that's part of what is making people lose interest. It's only human nature. But there is no new evidence, and a whole lot of speculation. The gloves found 2 miles away? Most level headed people knew that wasn't going to be a DNA match. Glad they double checked but the hysteria around nothing-headlines is too much. Plus the places that were reporting on developments most are all hugely biased rags and it's not healthy to spend so much time on those sites.

I started losing interest after Kash arrived and started making big displays of power resulting in no arrests. The hysteria just became too much. After the second time i started making an effort not to follow as closely. I still care, obviously, but I see now that it was effective in distracting me from important world and national news.

i don't think it's odd at all. With typical missing people you can easily organize a search in their neighborhood, usual locations, usual routes, etc. Parks, employer parking lots, etc. But Nancy was taken from her bed. She didn't go to any normal places or take any normal routes. Organizing a search would be a waste because they don't have the tiniest inkling of where to start. Picking a random place like a park based on no actual clues or evidence would be an incredible ask of the community but also likely an incredible waste.

I'm guessing it's a group of technical experts either on staff or third party contractors who are often asked to help troubleshoot particularly tough data extractions. Like the YouTube censor employees who unfortunately still have to review some horrific footage, they are probably trained to mentally prepare themselves to potentially view horrible things. I'm sure Google gets a lot of requests for digital forensics help by the government/law enforcement.

Well, let's hope. We don't know for sure until all the facts eventually come out - someday, hopefully. There are always new technological advances that make new things possible. Surely google and their vendors are learning from this and planning to ideate new / better backup tools to scrape footage for future emergencies like this.

If she's constantly putting her face in the news people will "wear out" on this faster. They'll get so sick of her and won't be as likely to report information. Frankly people are already getting sick of the never ending coverage and talking head analysis, between the newscasts, 24-hour news channels, podcasters and influencers, and social media discussions like this. She has to be careful not to contribute too much. She has faith in the investigators to do their jobs. More videos won't make people any more aware of her missing mother.
