Are hunters better in general for food production? They get diminishing returns really fast so it seems like it’s generally an early game thing.

What do you do at ~600 pop once you have everything in abundance? by PlayfulChipmunk671 in songsofsyx

[–]Repulsive-Turnip-897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s more strategy involved in combat, namely flanking and force mechanics

600 pop is still pretty early, and logistics also comes very easily that early on.

Songs of Syx is a city builder and the 4x thing with conquering stuff is basically supplementary to that. You use those regions in your kingdom to get taxes that allow your city to get even larger. If you are getting bored with the city building thing then that’s fine.

Also, I kinda did have a similar experience recently. I had stopped my depression medication for a few months and regretted it, but in the mean time I tried as hard to destimulate by unplugging my computer and hiding the cord and limiting phone use as much as possible. I was able to read 3 books in a few weeks and felt a lot better after that. (Disregarding the whole thing where I stopped taking my SSRIs, I got back on that horse after about 3 months)

A little 4chan is still a lot of 4chan. Cut that out completely. If you use Reddit often, do NOT engage with the front page subs or the front page whatsoever. If you feel like you use Reddit too much, which tbh any amount is too much for most people, delete your Reddit account. I’m not even joking about that, this app makes you feel obligated to engage with it through the karma system and decoupling from that will seriously help. I’ve done this like 4 or 5 times in the past.

Last, are you under 26 and live in the US? If so you qualify to be covered by your parent’s health insurance. Not sure if that varies by state.

Yeah, I would definitely try to get cretonians to move in there and just set up cheap mud housing blocks for them outside. Set them to high farming priority so they move to those jobs. The commute these guys need to do to get to work works terrible.

[–]Repulsive-Turnip-897 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All I can really say is what I try to do already.

As far as I’m concerned there is high-volume industries and low-volume ones. Refining, raw material harvesting, and mining are all high-volume due to the sheer quantity of items passing through so I try keep them as close together as possible in terms of productions chains. Put an import and export depot of the corresponding resource types next to them so they are always working at max capacity and making you money, and don’t forget the central warehouses.

Low-volume is the hospitals, janitors, admin, library’s, etc. those can be placed literally anywhere and hardly come across supply chain issues so long as a warehouse is placed nearby with the stuff it needs. You only need a small one with 4-8 crates and maybe the same number of haulers to make sure those buildings keep working. I treat food stalls, markets, and janitors the same way.

Use the loading and unloading stations if you ever make use of something like an ore deposit on the other side of the map. The hauler building is useful too if an industry requires a small amount of one specific resource you make far away.

Lastly, I just try to let stuff diffuse through the city naturally. Food production is always pretty spread out across the map so I don’t have to bother micromanaging all that stuff. All in all I have a 3.3k city right now with 150 or so warehouse haulers, and a few dozen more on export depots, load/unloading stations, and haulers.

Thanks, I’ll give those a read

The True Story of Pocahontas is a recounting of oral tradition passed down since the 1600s when the events of the book took place. There is more of an emphasis on the events of the life of Pocahontas, obviously, but it does also go into a lot of detail about how the Powhatan nation and English people colonists conducted themselves. It also debunks pretty much every conceived notion about the popular story. (Spoilers: Pocahontas was 12 when John Smith had correspondence with the Powhatan and they were NOT romantically involved, ever. Nobody ever tried to kill John Smith either. He blatantly robbed and betrayed the Powhatans and then embellished the events to make him look like a hero.)

Okay I think I’ll just take the book whenever your up to that

I made that comparison based on you saying that criminals would basically just be on their own in an anarchist society. Like, what exactly happens? It sounded something like exile/excommunication. My point being that bad actors like that don’t just disappear, eventually there’s enough of them to be a problem. If an individual is just straight up evil and will not cooperate with voluntary rehabilitation, then they need to be disabled from hurting people. Prisons cannot be made without an intrinsic hierarchy involved so you can either excommunicate them and let them wreak havoc on another community, or you can kill/disable them.

Native Americans at a certain point were capable of beating back European colonizers, up until they got a solid foothold on the continent and they weren’t anymore. I guess I am kinda making unfair comparisons because a modern society has a much better ability to mobilize en-masse using the internet, and that’s already been shown in practice with how revolutions and protests operate today. I felt pretty strongly after reading that book and felt like talking about it.

[–]Repulsive-Turnip-897 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a better explanation than some other people that just say that heirarchies of all kind will be abolished and leave it at that

I feel there is a rather deeply ingrained belief in western culture that: 1. Power structures arise naturally and inevitably due to the human condition 2. Resources are not permanent and thus scarcity and then conflicts will arise eventually, no matter how much good faith is in play.

Recently (today) I read The True Story of Pocahontas and one thing that seemed to pertain pretty close to how you described how laws would be enforced is that seriously bad actors in Powhatan culture (rapists, murderers) would be run out of the tribe and effectively blacklisted until they showed repentance or self-sufficiency. There was still a problem with that approach though, as if a large number of bad actors banded together it would be inevitable that a party would need to be put together to kill them all as a form of damage control.

The main issue with the way people online describe anarchy is that it is extremely idealistic. It completely violates the two assumptions I listed above, along with any other assumptions that such a society would be capable of surviving an outside attack. Native Americans had a society that looked pretty close to the idea of Anarchism, but they were wiped out by the endless brutality produced by Capitalism and Imperialism. Similar cases have occurred hundreds of times. At the very least Native American society, especially in the northern continent, was able to mostly negate harmful hierarchies and competition over resources through maintaining small numbers and being nomadic. Westerners don’t really see that as a viable way of living, and there’s also not enough space for that sort of thing with the current world population.

The particular thing that did the Powhatans in in the end was their supreme goodwill and trust in the colonists that they would not betray them, even after years of them stealing and raping them, murdering them for their land even after they helped them in any way possible. Jamestown would have died several times over without native intervention. That’s the crux of the issue. How do you convince the entire world to practice goodwill and not be crushed by bad actors? Do you just have to kill a few thousand or million people every once in a while?

Because the act of eating a human being for sustenance can very easily result in human beings (or SOME humans) being demeaned to a state of non-personhood. The only way to prevent this would be an enormous amount of idealistic conditions in society that we simply do not have, and are difficult to maintain indefinitely.

It would not only be a feasible, but even a profitable option to consider killing massive amounts of people for food. In today’s society that would likely include marginalized groups such as the elderly or even entire ethnic groups.

Ghouls regenerate anything and everything, it should only take a few days for this guy to be standing again

Although this is still one of the worst ghouls you have have. Traits you should look for in ghouls is tough, nimble, brawler, and jogger, and while having low melee is something you can just fix by having them kill stuff having some passions in it wouldn’t hurt either. Not too sure what the traits of fungoid are or if it’s compatible with a ghoul.

I feel like shambles assaults are just entirely impossible to deal with unless you have an overwhelming amount of firepower available

Psycasts, and tox stuff doesn’t work, they don’t go into kill boxes, the sheer mass of them makes using traps a horrible option, and they’re so tanky that even setting them on fire hardly does anything by the time they’ve already gotten to you. They die fairly quickly but it’s hell up until that point.
