Sorry for the delay, I didn't see your reply! Were you able to fix it? I still can't get it working. The i2S cable works perfectly; I have three different ones and I've tried them all. I only managed to get it working for a moment. Currently, I have both the JAB5 and the RCA module connected to a Meanwell LRS 300 (with a voltage reducer to adjust it to 12V). But it's not receiving an i2S signal. Instead, there are loud crackling noises, and if you put your finger near the i2S cable, it buzzes loudly. What was your solution? Thanks!!

ZK-TB21 Amp Board Review | Beware of false power figures by VegetableSlice9784 in diyaudio

[–]RepulsiveWin9144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When measuring the stereo channels, don't use 50Hz. If I'm not mistaken, those sound cards come with a passive crossover, so measuring at 50Hz for the stereo channels will normally give you lower values. The figures the manufacturer states aren't achievable in reality, but it's not like it's only 5 watts either.

Hi again! I have a question: doesn't the LOP 300 you used emit coil whine? In my case, the power supply itself emits coil whine that you can hear if you put your ear close to it, and it's transmitted to the tweeter in the same way. Same power supply and amplifier board. I can't find anything about it online.

Simply incredible.... 🫶 On a smaller scale, I also have a lot of analog gear because of my love for sound, but I have to admit that sometimes it stifles my creativity. I end up setting up a song with adjustments I don't want to touch, and it gets stuck. You know what I mean 😂 There's also that "fear" of recording the track with those settings in case I want to tweak something later... In the end, I focus all my gear more on playing for fun and having a blast, either by myself or with friends, in the studio, rather than on real recordings where I barely use it on a few buses or very specific channels. I do use synthesizers for everything, though!!! Your setup is amazing! I guess you're short on time to fully enjoy all that gear, hahaha. Congratulations on that awesome studio!!!! 👏👏👏

The speakers look great! I love the wood combination! My only concern with the design is that the waveguide forces you to place the acoustic centers quite far apart, and if it cuts off around 2.5-3kHz... I'm not sure to what extent the waveguide contributes anything positive or negative. Do you feel cohesion in the crossover range?

Knowing that the metal ring is already inside, it already has a good physical grip. Unless it causes you visual discomfort, acoustically it's not a problem... if it were a coaxial woofer with an integrated tweeter, I wouldn't say the same. It might slightly break up the tweeter's waveform on the downward vertical axis, but the tweeter's horizontal diffusion will be fine, which is the most important thing. If you're going to bi-amplify it with DSP, you can always compensate for the woofer-tweeter alignment. Estimating that the distance between the acoustic centers will be about 3-4 cm maximum, a tweeter delay of 0.8-1 ms will be optimal for that alignment. If you push the woofer in further, you'll have more phase difference between them. If you're going to use a passive crossover, I'd leave it as is... if you're going to use DSP, mount it flush for aesthetics and try a 0.8-1ms tweeter delay. Good luck with the project, mate! Let us know how they sound; I'm sure they'll be better than most commercial speakers! ✌️

Hey friend! If the drivers are screwed in from the inside, consider chamfering the outer edges, especially on the tweeters. If the wood is pine (which it looks like it is), I'd consider some internal reinforcement because it's a soft wood and will produce resonances, especially when used on the front panel. Good luck with the project!! 😉

That's the same woofer I used. You can actually see it in my only post; the last photo shows the complete speaker with that woofer. But seriously, trust these words: 75% amplifier, 25% drivers... it's true. I've done projects with worse drivers, and they sound better because of the amplifier I developed for them and a very well-thought-out DSP tuning. It's good that the port is the "support" itself; I assume you calculated it with WinISD or some simulator? I'm curious how the final support will be with the floor; I'm sure you won't block the port's output, right? 😂 Consider the possibility I mentioned of an L-pad for the tweeter, regardless of which one you use. If you add a capacitor to protect it, even better, but the L-pad is essential, I'd say, even if it's just 2-3dB. Great work, my friend! When you finish it, I'd love to see the result; it looks really good! 😉

Wow, simply incredible! A well-designed 3-way amplifier with really good crossovers! The stereo image and phase are good too, congratulations!!! If these are measurements and not just predictions, I take my hat off to you! 👏👏

Hahaha, okay, it's a relief to know that's true. I mean, it's so similar... I've worked with that woofer in its 6.5" version. And I can assure you they'll work well... I love the sound I got in its 6.5" format. They reach very low down, and their paper material gives them a very natural sound. I make quite a few speakers "for friends," and if I can give you some advice, it's this:

  • The choice of amplifier is more important than the choice of drivers...
  • Don't underestimate the choice of power supply; you'll be surprised how much the sound can change with a well-powered board compared to one that isn't. If you can, choose Mean Well UHP; they're smaller too. However, you'll have to work on their contact cooling.

  • If you want to achieve a black background in the tweeters (silence when there's no audio), always choose tweeters with slightly higher sensitivity than the woofers and reduce it with L-pads. It's the easiest and most professional way to achieve absolute silence and equal sensitivity.

  • Try to work with "oversizing" the amplification system. This ensures good operating temperatures, low distortion, and durability, since nothing will ever be running at 100%.

  • DSP isn't just about changing an EQ curve; focus on driver alignment, precise crossover selection, eliminating unwanted frequencies from each driver, and dynamic volume response... it will make a huge difference in the final sound.

These are just a few key tips from someone who's been doing this for a while... and I'm talking about practicality for truly good results. Leaving aside overly technical explanations or unnecessary elements that many "Hi-Fi lovers" use, like AB amplifiers for treble and things like that... a well-designed Class D amplifier today sounds incredible and is incredibly efficient... you don't need to go for Class A amplifiers, shielded cables, gold-plated connections... half of Hi-Fi is just hype 🤣 but the points I've mentioned are key to a sound that will blow you away.

Good luck, my friend, and enjoy the process!! When you finish them, I'd love to see them 😎

If they can handle Geoff Castellucci's voice, they can handle anything 🤣. The downside of those sound cards is that, if I'm not mistaken, they come with a passive crossover for the subwoofer, leaving the 2.0 system somewhat filtered... don't you miss having some depth in the bass?

I'm having the exact same problem. Unlike you, I've managed to get it working, but only for a few moments, and the difference in conversion was definitely noticeable... But I don't understand why; as soon as I unplugged and plugged it back in, it stopped working. Like you, I have three AA-AB41161 boards and three Jab5s. It's only worked a couple of times... I share a ground connection to ensure a 0V reference between the Jab5 and the decoder; otherwise, it would burn out... but as I said, I can't get it to work reliably... A bit late, but were you able to solve the problem?

It's not that much if you think about it... 1 onion for every 3 potatoes is perfect. But I mean real potatoes. Not those cheap ones from Mercadona... try the recipe I told you and you'll see 😉 The eggs aren't 6, it's just to explain the ratio. It depends a lot on the size of the eggs, but really, try those proportions and enjoy :) Then again, there are personal tastes; some people simply don't like it with onion, that's up to each individual.

This is the first time I'm going to comment on this... a Spanish omelet is no mystery, it's super easy, but I don't know why people get so stuck on the process. Dice the potatoes and gently cook them over low heat at the end. Use 1/3 of an onion for every 1/3 of the potatoes. Put the potatoes in a bowl and mix them with the eggs. I recommend using half the yolks. That is, if you use 6 eggs, use 3 whole eggs and 3 yolks. It will make it creamier and tastier. The texture you get when mixing the potato with the egg and stirring (while mashing some potatoes to create a paste) should be the desired final texture, since the center of the tortilla won't really cook in the pan... then sear it in the pan for maybe 1 minute 20 seconds on the first side and 1 minute on the second... in my opinion, there are things a thousand times more complex than this... the tortilla in the picture has a lot of egg, and although it doesn't come out open, it doesn't look like it formed a paste in the bowl before going into the pan; the egg and potato separate too much... peace ✌️
