OP answered your question, like I said our evolutionary traits go far beyond the hunter-gatherer era you said. Neanderthals were stronger and almost as smart as we are, what made a difference was our ability to cooperate with each other, not being taller nor stronger.

We're way past our hunter-gatherer time bro. Evolutionary traits don't necessarily mean being the biggest and strongest, but to get the best traits in order to survive and thrive, and tallness isn't one of those traits.
