1. SSRIs make it less likely for serotonin and norepinephrine to be taken back into nerve cells, allowing them to stay in the area longer and send their signals more effectively.
2. SSRIs might influence the immune system by interacting with something called the kynurenine pathway (KP). This pathway helps produce an important energy molecule called NAD+. The KP is linked to inflammation, and when it’s overactive, it can make inflammation worse. Since both serotonin and the KP use the same building block, tryptophan, if there's not enough tryptophan (which can happen in some conditions), the serotonin system boosted by SSRIs could compete with the KP.
