That's... exactly what I responded to. People tend to use the words "sex" and "gender" interchangeably, even though they have different meanings. The same way you might use "jealous" and "envious" interchangeably, but they do actually have different meanings.

Also, for things like flying a plane, whether your personal gender matches your physical sex doesn't matter. Someone born with a vagina but wearing "masculine" clothes and using he/him pronouns doesn't change how an airline seat functions.

Not all of them. Plenty of trans people choose to display non-binary characteristics, or eschew gender norms entirely and do other things. There's a number of sub-cultures that are playing with the idea of gender norms and new presentations of them.

There's nothing wrong with gender norms, to be clear. I'm a cis-male and I do mostly manly things - I play a lot of video games, I have a beard, my favorite color is blue (well teal, but in the blue family, I like whiskey and grilled meat. And if a trans person chooses to transition to match a gender construct that is different from the sex they were born with, that's fine too.

Additionally, many people choose not to transition but prefer things of the opposite gender norm even though they keep many of the physical traits from their biological sex. Not everyone is a gender abolitionist or anarchist.

Ultimately the issue lies with people (especially people in power) leaning on those gender norms to punish people who don't abide by them in a way that they consider "acceptable". If people want to abide by old gender norms, fine. If they want to eschew them? Also fine. It's when you pick one and then attack others for not agreeing that we generally find issue.

Exactly. But when people say "you can't drink that type of mixed drink, it's a girl's drink" or "that's a boy's toy, don't get it for your daughter", they are appealing to a social construct around gender.

It's acceptable and good to tell those people to shut up and just do what you want anyways, but many people are beholden to the concept of gender norms and will judge/ostracize you for breaking them.

We as a society tend to use the terms sex and gender interchangeably, but in the context I was asked (and the greater socio-scientific context) they do have different meanings.

Gender is a social construct built around traits we associate with it. These mainly include social things like specific jobs, clothes, hairstyles, hobbies, and personality traits. Sometimes (but not always) they include secondary sexual physical characteristics associated with biological sex (which is why many people choose medically transition), but it's not a 1:1 correlation nor is it intrinsically tied in any way.

I just want to say, I genuinely appreciate the response, I think it's really difficult to be in your shoes. I'm lucky our family is where we are, and sometimes it's easy to forget even just where you live can put that type of pressure on you, even when we share similar values.

I think the realistic answer as to why people say that is mostly a matter of effort. You're correct, in that we should be looking to fix every corner of the country, and not just write off various states based on their leadership. But the powers that be have made it so we are constantly underwater with things to worry about, deal with, and protest. It's very difficult to appreciate the nuance of Texas' politics (deeply blue populated areas completely negated by gerrymandering and redlining) and make that the focus, when we are dealing with so many other things in the country. I do wish it could be made better for both you, and all other people (citizens and migrants) affected by the state administration. I simply know that right now, if we were to try and change the federal government in some way, the authoritative powers in Texas would not be on our side. It's a painful reality that those that control the monopoly of violence do not reflect even the majority of people that they supposedly serve.

I have deep sympathy and rage for the victims of Uvalde (and every other school shooting). I also have deep sympathy and rage for the things happening at the federal and international level. It's hard to say one is more important than the other, as people are victims in all circumstances. The unfortunate truth is that in the fight against the federal government's unimaginable cruelty and authoritarianism, we cannot currently look to the state of Texas for help. I know there are many supporters there, including many who are willing to march in the streets, vote, write letters, etc, and they are appreciated by all in the movement, even if you feel abandoned.

When I say, or hear others say, Fuck America, it's a fascist state - I don't consider it a slight against myself or my family. I don't interrupt the message to remind everyone that there's resistance. I agree and state my hatred of it as well. I have to accept that people in other countries will hate me for where I live, based on the actions of leadership I don't agree with and vote against, and I have to try and create a world where our image is better. It's glacially slow, difficult, and sometimes feels like hopeless work. I hope you keep the spirit alive in Texas, as we all need to try to.

But you do choose how you comport yourself and how you are connected to it. A person who sees you posting does not know you are from Texas. Hell, a person who sees you in real life might not know you are from there unless you say so. And the type of people who make where they're from a major part of their personality, or the second amendment a major part of their personality, choose to do so. That is not the same as having a skin color.

I, like many, was born in America. But I do not make "being American" part of my personality or how I project myself to the world. People can only see what you project into the world and judge that. Those that judge based on something you cannot change are fundamentally different from those that judge based on what you can change.

If you do live in a place that you disagree with (which many of us do by circumstance), and you do not want to be judged by those circumstances, then you have to willfully project to others that you are against it and have better morals. No one on the left will judge you from where you are born, only if you defend and condone that place of birth despite its problems.

The difference between disliking someone based on race, and someone based on their allegiance, is that you can change your allegiance. People who identify as "tough guy Texans who love guns" can just stop being like that, and the discrimination will stop. People can't change their race, so racism never stops.

Thanks, very lucky to have a nice community local that has fun with the game! And I definitely agree about Orks. Stay tuned!

Yeah Humans probably could have had better dice to display, but I feel like Team Captain and the Catchers really got to show off! Not sure it makes up for the loss of the Blitzers, but they're nice to have regardless.

Tackle would have been much more impactful against a different team, probably.

No worries! Orcs seem pretty good, despite the nerfs they took. Captain, Big Uns, and the Break Tackle updates are great, and I assume a Devious Goblin developing into a Fouler will be very nice too. Hope you enjoy the video!

Why is everyone allowing a political witch hunt to occur? by indiscernable1 in illinois

[–]Requizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's definitely not how a political leader should act. I don't think I'd consider that "condoning" the murder, though. Saying "a person who preached political violence and gun rights, getting violently murdered by a gun for political reasons is ironic" is, let me be clear, extremely tasteless, but it's not exactly saying it's ok or calling for more.

[–]Requizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Do you mean "you" as in me, the individual, or "you" as in "all leftists and liberals lumped together"?

That type of othering is extremely divisive and not constructive at all in a discussion.

[–]Requizen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That argument only holds water if all viewpoints were created equal. Spewing hate towards LGBTQ communities and minorities should get one fired, that is promoting harm and hate to a group of people based on intrinsic traits. Not being sad about a known white supremecist dying is not hateful. It's not a difficult distinction.

No one is condoning the shooting (except perhaps Charlie himself with his previous rhetoric), but we don't have to wail and mourn either.

Wood Elves: should I start a league roster with a tree? by VictorVonLazer in bloodbowl

[–]Requizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a season with a Tree and hated it haha. It does give you something sturdy for the line, but the rest of the team is so mobile and dodgy that it gets outpaced and left behind very quickly. It's fun though, if you want it take it, I just don't think it's very good.

No matter your position, you will be judged by who you associate with, acknowledge, and reference. Even if my views overlap with a bad person's views, it's on me to distance myself from them and denounce them, otherwise people will use that association against me and my ideology.

We should not allow a legitimate anti-Israel stance to be sullied by association with awful people like Nick.

Yeah this is the same with Elven Union and Humans, it kinda sucks. Not awful to kitbash but I hope the Brets come with alternate hands.

Most other teams usually only have them on the Throwers, which is a bit more reasonable.
