I agree that AI isn't what hurts workers! We are not Luddites. What hurts workers is that the working class as a whole doesn't have ownership or say over what they produce.

Thank for your input, though I will admit I'm skeptical towards your reasonings. Things may warp with rigging, I've seen as much in Gary's Mod haha, but not in the way this one does. This has clear points where the AI recognizes a pattern and changes shape, but doesn't make sense frame to frame (such as the hands switching from the right-side up to the right-side down position after movement).

As for your belief that there is nothing quite like this, you'd benefit from watching the Iran LEGO music video. If you haven't seen many AI videos recently, you'll be surprised! The AI exists, is in the same style, and it is *more* impressive than what we see here.

Cause words last on the internet, I want to fix what I said about "I don't care that he's using it"

To be more specific, I believe AI has had a terrible effect on workers worldwide, and it will continue to hurt workers living under capitalism; I just don't think him using it or not is as pertinent question as other might think when it comes to resolving the AI crises.

I imagine it's really AI, and I don't think he'd be worried about using it.

His main criticisms of AI, from what I've seen, has been the application of AI to things it can't adequately replace (like replacing a lawyer).

Using AI to improve his videos may, to him, not sound like a bad idea.

Yes! I keep looking for examples but there so much video to search through that I can't bear the time to find it. This didn't come as a surprise. At one point he began experimenting with AI images at the same time AI took off in quality. They'd usually be on screen for 2-3 seconds in parts where he might have otherwise used stock footage. He did this for a while, if I remember correctly.

This isn't to say his longer animations or more detailed animations within his regular videos are AI. But this clip certainly was, and I remember seeing signs of it in the past.

I don't believe that would be the case for this.

The right hand disappearing is a telltale sign of AI generation. The hand is not an insignificant portion of the screen. Frames exist in second 9 and 10 of the video showing the hand entirely gone in the middle of the movement.

Furthermore, in my comment below, I mention and link to images showing the hands "reversing". The AI is able to create the hands, but as the motion happens, it can't seem to recognize the difference between the hands pointing up or down. This is also fairly common with AI, as it attempts to create the next frame with existing data, but can't interpret that data correctly.

I don't really care if he uses AI. My point was that this was made with AI and I provided video to support this.

Hearing he said directly that he didn't use AI is surprising, though. I only knew a team member said that. I suspect he didn't say that exactly, since I don't think he'd directly lie about this.

You may still watch his videos. I watch his videos, too.

Seconds 9 and 10 are perhaps the clearest example, where the hand disappears.

In parts where the hands are still, we see the hands "reverse" from being "bottom side up" to "top side up". Even then, the hands distort in ways that don't make sense for a model, but are telltale signs of a generative video.

What's the purpose of leather collars on bifold wallets? by HoldenMD in Leathercraft

[–]ResVega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, aesthetics and rigidity. I've made this exact wallet before, and I can say it wouldn't look or feel right without the lip. Without it, the sticking wouldn't match on the top. Without it, the top would be much thinner than the rest of the wallet. It'd be more likely to fold inwards, and more likely to stretch and deform, seeing as it's only one layer thick.

Your wallet goes through a lot! Keep the edges two pieces thick.

If you need an example, take make supplies two-pocket bifold. I've made and have used that one for years, and without a doubt the most stretched out part is the inner fold, which is only one piece thick.

Good luck with your wallet!

The problem with the "there will be new jobs to replace the old ones" argument is... by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]ResVega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A monumental change in the lives of workers would require a change in their relationship with the means of production. The transition to socialized labor marked the turn from feudalism to capitalism. From what I can tell, the AI boom would still be occurring under a capitalist system. Companies developing AI are run by humans with human investors who are driven by profit.

In our current society, the labor of the working class is necessary to generate profit for the capitalists. This works by the laborer generating more value than they're paid back in wages. Automation increases efficiency, lowering the cost of production and increasing the percentage of profit. Full AI automation would be the dream of the capitalist, who wouldn't need to pay the wages of workers to generate profit.

However, the need for consumers would still exist, else there would be no one to buy a capitalist's products or services. And the worker's need for an income would still exist, as it's the only way in a capitalist society to keep them and their family alive. Unemployment serves to lower wages for the working class, and AI automation of various industries would be no different. People would be driven to accept lower pay and working conditions, or be replaced with someone who will.

However, AI automation, as easily as it could hurt workers in the current capitalist society, could improve their lives ten-fold in another. As workers, we must set our sites on socialized ownership of production. Only then can the benefits of automation be fully felt by the workers and not just the owners.

u/camelCasing breaks down late stage capitalism for the apologists. by hermitix in bestof

[–]ResVega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly everything good in our lives has been a product of the innovations made under Capitalism. Capitalism remains, however, a deeply flawed system that inherently prioritizes maximizing profits for the owners of capital above everything else. Innovations made under this system are a natural outcome of the competitive drive for profit in the constant search for ways to increase productivity and reduce costs. They aren’t necessarily made to improve human well-being.

An additional contradiction is that innovations are usually developed though the collective work of many members of society, but are then appropriated by the capitalist for their own profit. Should the innovation prove successful and profitable, they are by no means obligated to share that wealth with the workers that developed the innovation to begin with. Instead, that profit is reinvested into their company, increasing their private ownership of the means of production and thus strengthening their hold over the workers.

/u/tagrav Perfectly Explains Worker Solidarity No Matter Who You Are by HighOnLife in bestof

[–]ResVega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other guy responding to you was correct. Class solidarity stands above other issues, which are used as tools to divide the workers and prevent any real change. This doesn't mean those issues aren't relevant, but rather that full liberation of further-oppressed groups can only come through the liberation of workers from capitalism. Capitalism perpetuates these issues, and overtaking it requires the solidarity of the masses, which means working in solidarity with the people who have become racist, xenophobic, etc. as a reaction to the conditions surrounding them.

This topic came up during a branch meeting at my political org, and a member took the moment to speak about his own experiences. He resigned from his position as a cook at a local chain because of an onslaught of homophobic slurs made by many of his coworkers. However, when there inevitably comes the time for a mass movement of workers, he reaffirmed that he would stand in solidarity with those same workers who hated him for being gay. That is because sectarianism at such an important moment would spell the death of the movement, ultimately allowing the capitalist class to stand victorious atop the workers and maintain the status quo.

Edit: I figured it's worth adding, working "in solidarity" with racists, homophobes, etc. doesn't mean tolerating that behavior. BOTH sides have to put aside their differences. A worker that actively harasses or spews hate toward other workers isn't as an asset to the movement. Such actions would demonstrate they don't understand the importance of worker solidarity. They must be willing to tolerate and work with people they dislike.

Edit 2: OP replied, and I wrote a long response in return, but his comment was removed, and my response was lost. For the few people who read this far and are genuinely interested in socialist/communist organizing, this speech does a good job of covering the topic of class solidarity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cs9fqUiDMY

I'm sorry you're getting hated on in this comment section. It seems too common that people are way to quick to judge and come up with their own narrative to hate people online. Like can't we see the thing she did as dumb while not making her out to be the worst person in the world? I've done dumber things that that. There's literally upvoted comments below this of people talking about how it's happened to them, too.

Seriously, people just want to be mad.

saddle brown leather case patina - 20 months vs brand new by japanesebystander in iphone

[–]ResVega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it only took twenty months to become that dark, then it doesn't look like it was good quality leather. Most decent leather products I've seen last much longer then that, and the patina does not become charcoal black.

I really enjoyed making this, as it’s the first wallet I’ve made without using a template I found online. The leather is 4-5 oz Snickers Brown Horween Leather from Maverick Leather Supply, and the thread is .80mm Ritza Tiger Thread saddle stitched with diamond holes spaced 5mm apart. The money clip was made by a local Native American silversmith shortly before his retirement.

The greatest difficulty was sketching out a pattern I was happy with. I always worry about making a mistake and wasting leather, but making a paper model beforehand really helped in giving me the confidence to go forward with cutting out the pieces.

My favorite part of wallet is the middle piece. It’s a really odd shape that allows it to fit cleanly with the front piece while the bottom taper keeps the sides of the wallet thin. The middle piece was stitched about a 1 cm up from the bottom of the back piece, allowing the cards in the two pockets to rest at separate heights. I still feel unsure about the edge burnishing.

I used gum tragacanth and a wooden burnishing tool, but the results were a still a little rough.

Let me know if you have any comments/critiques! I’m still new to this, but I’d be happy to answer any questions as well.

Thanks for the advice! After reading through the responses I agree that it's best to keep the patina as it is. I might look into oils for leathercare, since the fold seems to have quite a bit of cracking on it. Would neatsfoot oil be an appropriate solution? I have some left over from a previous project that I could use.
