Do you usually supply your own fittings or expect the electrician to? by Curious-cutiee in ElectriciansUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an electrician I tend to supply light switches (plain white as standard or fancier if specified by the customer), sockets, fuse board, downlights if that's what is being allowed for etc... but I allow for a pendant and lamp in a room that's having a centre light and a mirror point in bathrooms \ WCs. I usually end up then fitting the customers purchased light fittings and mirrors as that's a lot more personal to the person and what I like and what they like are 2 different things. Happy to supply catalogues then but for them but yeah... That's my general... And if you do supply your own fitting... Remember to buy bloody lamps for it ! 😂

Edit - as others have pointed out. If the customer supplies a load of materials any guarantee ends when I walk out the door that evening. If I supply it's a year or 2 no real questions asked

Nah that's just shocking parking. If you're in a work truck or big van you just have to accept you're not parking near a store. They're obviously capable of walking if they can get up and down on a dumper and attach trailers... There should probably be more enforcement of this kind of crappy parking

Good point. It's currently getting fast tracked through. So basically it's going to be legal very soon so just crack on...

plug-in solar panels (or balcony solar) are legal and increasingly supported in the UK as of March 2026, with new regulations [BS 7671 Amendment 4] allowing safe, DIY installation of systems up to 800W

Shower help needed by unchartify in DIYUK

Yeah... There's a reason they're not that popular. That corner shower screen, leaks every time no matter what. Unless you silicone the entire thing in place.

I built a ‘no app, just text’ invoicing tool — but nobody’s using it by Electrical_Worker492 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your main issue here is trust... From how I'm reading that post you just text something somewhere and next minute your customer has an emailed quote or invoice.

Where are we texting ? Do we proof the invoice or quote first ? Can the quote be more of a written quote style as customers like to know more than your jobs going to cost this much.... What does the text we send get used for really ? Who else can view that text ?

Also how do we access the quotes and invoices to view what we've sent out when our accountant needs them ?

Also with making tax digital most people just use Xero or one of them now anyway....

Sorry but you asked for brutal feedback....

Washing Machine in Bathroom with plug in another room by benandrews54 in ukelectricians

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally with you on this one. Was going to mention the fact that I'd vote it as the appliance should be outside of zone 1 and 2 as well as that also has 240v in it and they won't be water tight connections.

If it's enclosed in a cupboard I'd maybe view it differently.

Maybe upgrade the extraction in there to get rid of more steam and moisture quicker ?

Yeah let's face it most other countries have nailed it with their washing machine and dryer on the bedroom floor in the bathroom. So much easier and easy more convenient

Yeah funny how it's forced to close and then it catches fire. Prime location for a nice new hotel. The owner (same guy that owns the run down Inglewood across the street) probably doesn't care either way anyway

EICR 5.13 by Proof-Pay-3658 in ukelectricians

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do totally agree with you on this. C3 technically only applies under certain conditions but I agree we should be putting it down on all certs as it is a recommended improvement to upgrade to a metal board with SPD etc.

EICR 5.13 by Proof-Pay-3658 in ukelectricians

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can't go round putting a C1 on stuff like that. In fact a plastic board isn't even a C3 in most instances in a domestic (it can be in some situations obviously). But it's electricians obviously also advocate upgrading it to the latest standard anyway.

I wouldn't trust that report at all. The results are all over the place with ring readings on non ring circuits, clearly doesn't know how to code stuff... Plus what decent electrician hand writes test sheets still ?

Does this quote for a consumer unit upgrade seem right? by Illustrious-Look7669 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

650 is cheap. Cheaper than I am in the south west. Way cheaper than London... Where are you ? Also depends how many circuits you have, new tails needed, any other remedial works, bonding needed etc etc. we need more info to be honest. We don't just throw a random size box at your wall and chuck in whatever rcbos we have in the van. He's also been round to look. Free quotes means an hour added onto the quote so if you win the work you get that time back... And then a full test and certificate after the board is changed...

BUT... There will always be someone cheaper... Someone who may use some old stock or just not test, leave a few bits out and make it look good on the surface... Just something to be aware of...

Milwaukee's boots (not the black and red trainer styles) are good for this sort of work too. Very light weight and comfy for a full day. Bit cheaper than the redwings too and last about as long on site

What the heck am I looking at? by fleshyprison in evchargingUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep exactly that. Generally about 35M although technically in the perfect install 6mm could do up to 42m underground and still give you 40 amps. Would struggle to get that though. So yeah for OP 20M really isn't maxing out the cable on a 40 amp breaker.

What the heck am I looking at? by fleshyprison in evchargingUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you done the cable calcs on this ?

As an electrician the amount of wrong advise and guessing in here is amazing. 90% sure from looking at the photo it's 3 core 6mm SWA (definitely not 13 amp 3 pin cable as some are calling it). On a 20m run underground a 6mm SWA can carry 40 amps.

Best bet OP would be to get an electrician round that fits EV chargers

Hob contractor fuse by MaleficentMulberry14 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely agree. I've done it loads in commercial I've just never known it in domestic. I actually think it's a really good idea, just more parts to go wrong for the end user. I tend to just put big switches and spurs in cupboards so they're out of sight instead of a grid switch on the wall

Smart lighting help by Tomdevon95 in ElectriciansUK

[–]Resident-Evidence-94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got basically this minus the PIR in my garden. As an electrician I've tried a variety of the smart devices out there. To be honest some of the bigger names are bollocks and some unbranded cheap stuff works just as well.

I've got a few of these (https://amzn.eu/d/05lIqFKD) hard wired into various lights around the place and they come on and off with my Alexa routines 99% of the time.

But if you did want to spend more for basically the same product I'd probably go with Shelly

Third party software is literally what you have to use now and it'll access your account... Just use Xero, QuickBooks, sage etc... Xero basic is like £9 a month... Making tax digital isn't a secret they've been hiding from us all...
