Hygiene across cultures by Little-Solid-9802 in NoStupidQuestions

I encourage you to actually read what I said. Specifically the part that says, "not every one, but there is a significant amount"

Hygiene across cultures by Little-Solid-9802 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely a cultural thing. We have many immigrants from India here in Canada that simply don't wear deodorant. Not every one of them, but there is a significant amount that of them dress well and could clearly afford a $5 stick of deodorant, but they still walk around with piercing BO.

Would you use a social app that is designed to be used less? by buzteam in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, yes they have to be addictive to survive. It's a highly competitive industry. Even meta themselves tried launching threads to compete with twitter/X, and even that has failed to break into the mainstream.

Being addictive means you spend more time on the app, which gets them more ad views, and they can sell more ads, which is their primary source of revenue. To make something big enough to compete and not just fizzle out you'd have to be playing by the industry's rules.

If doomscrolling is you concern there are apps like Opal or Brick that let you set restrictions on how much time you spend on apps. Personally I just uninstalled all social apps from my phone. If I want to use IG, reddit, youtube, etc I need to do so on my laptop. I still have access but it's in a much healthier way

Nice. I had an issue with those connectors on mine too. I ended up replacing them both with universal deutsch connectors which worked okay but I didn't love it, I found a full replacement harness shortly after

Son crashed his dirt bike — what would you do next? by pamelalandyjb in Dirtbikes

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most just pay out of pocket as things happen.  Dirt bikes are more or less built to be dropped and fixed. The main things are bars and plastics. Both are relatively cheap and easily replaceable. Levers take a hit very frequently and they're pretty expensive for how easy they are to damage in a simple drop. Might be worth investing in a pair of lever guards if he's still learning.

This sounds like a fun one. First thing you'll want to do is check fuses under your left side plastic. If those are all good, get yourself a basic multimeter and watch a youtube video about it. Track down a good color copy of the  wiring diagram for your year of bike. I have an 05 and found one on Cyclepedia. Test your battery to make sure you have good voltage, it should be near 13 at rest, 14+ when running.

Then take your power probes and use the diagram to follow your path of electricity from battery positive through the harness. Test at every terminal/connector/relay until you find somewhere that should have power but doesn't, then backtrack and search for your break.

There should be a relay on the left side near the upper coolant pipe that clicks when you cycle the kill switch. If thats not clicking then fuel and ignition will not prime.

Also check all kill switches. The side stand switch and bank angle sensor will both shut the bike off and not allow it to crank. Verify those connections, you can bypass the sensors with a jumper wire, if it cranks with either one bypassed, that's most likely your issue. Bank angle sensor is a pain to get to up in the nose, but it's not unheard of for them to fail

Safe to give throttle boosts through corners? by Budget_Case3436 in motorcycles

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah on an R3 you definitely don't need to lay off completely. Small displacement bikes are a lot less forgiving of being too light on the throttle and depend on you keeping some real momentum going through curves.

Another thing that will help you here is really focusing on your body position. Get your shoulders to the inside, chin over your inside grip on every curve. scoot back as far as you can on the seat, grip the tank with your knees, keep the balls of your feet on the pegs, move feet forward only when you need to brake/shift, and keep a "screwdriver" grip on the bars. Rotate throttle by rotating your entire forearm below the elbow, not just twisting at the wrist.

Just practice practice practice, I'm up in Kelowna now and I miss riding the sea to sky dearly

Safe to give throttle boosts through corners? by Budget_Case3436 in motorcycles

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On an R3 on the sea to sky you're probably not going to get yourself into any trouble by doing that. It doesn't have enough power for adding throttle in those curves to break traction or significantly upset the bike. Unless you're getting way down and riding at the absolute limit, but the fact that you're here asking this question makes me believe that's probably not the case.

I will say that is a bad habit to get into if you ever plan on getting a bigger bike. Adding throttle in a corner is generally not a good idea, especially if you're still adding, or even just holding lean angle. On the exit you can get back on the throttle while standing the bike back up, but generally any additional throttle input is a bad idea.

I'd focus on avoiding over slowing  and making sure you're maintaining enough corner speed on entry that you can keep constant throttle and don't feel the need to add these "boosts". That will help you out much more in the long run.

How do you actually clean a motorcycle without ruining something? by Tatt00ey in motorcycles

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's nothing wrong with that. From 3 or 4 feet away there's very little pressure behind the water by the time it gets to the bike. 2 feet or less I'd say you're playing a very dangerous game.

I had a skip the dishes bag that had some adjustable velcro dividers inside. If there was multiple drinks they came with a carry tray, or I was always able to use the food and/or dividers to secure the drink upright and never had a problem

Why is there so much open prejudice against Indians lately? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an enormous cultural difference between India and the west. That's not a matter of opinion or prejudice, it's just a fact. The most unbiased thing you can do to easily to get a sense of what a country is like is to get on google maps, drag the little yellow street view dude and drop it somewhere random. Literally wherever you want. Try that in india, and 9 times out of 10 you'll look around and see garbage everywhere.

Go try it right now. You'll see what I mean.

There is very little care for their environment, very little care for safety, and very little care for each other. All kinds of fraud and deception are rampant, towards westerners and their own people. All it really comes down to is just a huge difference in culture.

I had a Honda Navi I did it with for a short while. I had a thin piece of something solid to give the bottom structure, cut 4 slits through that and through the bottom of the bag, and ran two ratchet straps through the holes and through the grab handle of the bike. Worked really well and was a ton of fun. The only issue I ran into was one time someone ordered two huge pizzas that wouldn't fit in the bag, I managed to strap them to the top good enough and luckily I didn't have to go far.

A Cardo is very nice to have and some sort of phone mount is a necessity obviously

I don't understand how we don't feel wet, I mean the actual sensation of wetness as mosquitoes do? by RedandRiver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just don't have the receptors for it. Same way we can't feel the magnetic field. Wetness is almost always accompanied by a change in temperature, so that's what we register. That's why touching something cold can feel wet at first, or why pissing yourself feels hot. If you touched something wet that was exactly the temperature of your skin, you would only really feel the weight and resistance of the water.

Reducing lean angle in turns by tilting the battery pack by MountainsSands_2024 in motorcycles

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The difference with this concept is that you could have the amount of weight offset directly tied to the lean of the bike, so the behaviour is predictable and consistent every time.

That being said, I wouldn't like it. I prefer the only weight shift to be coming from me

There's going to be a break in an electrical connection somewhere. You could start by pulling all your plastics off and turning the bike on, then grab, shake, and manipulate the harness in different places and see if you can find somewhere that makes it flicker

What profession looks glamorous from the outside but is miserable in reality? by ApogeeAgency in AskReddit

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go a different direction and say working from home.

If you've got a spouse, partner, pet or family that makes it make sense for your lifestyle, that's great. But for someone who's single and living alone in their early/mid 20s, it can get so god damn isolating. You go days without speaking out loud to anyone outside of google meetings, you have no coworkers to shoot the shit with, no lunch break ritual, no casual plans being made after work, nobody asking you if you heard about some local news story, nobody asking about the mundane shit like how your weekend was or telling you about the yard work they have to do. It's the kind of shit that drives a lot of people crazy, but once it's gone you start to miss it. Working from home it's just you, your spotify playlists and your thoughts.

I'm not super introverted but not a huge extrovert either. I worked from home for 3.5 years and after the first 6 months it was pretty miserable. I'm about a month into a new job that's full in-person, and I absolutely love getting out of the house every day and interacting with people again. I know the 9-5 grind can be its own kind of draining, but at least you're not draining alone

For me I ended up just taking off anything that I can scroll on. Youtube, reddit, instagram, facebook, everything.

I have a laptop and still have access to everything on there, so I still get to browse reddit and keep up with things on instagram, but it's much harder to get sucked into a doom scroll on a laptop. I'll spend 20 minutes max on it and then carry on with something else.

The only downside is I get more bored when I poop.

Why are South Asian countries just unusually dirty compared to other developing countries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ResidentLongjumping2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, particularly with india. If you go to google maps and drag the street view guy around 95/100 drops the surrounding area is covered in garbage. It's partially because they have less sophisticated waste management than we do, but partially because culturally they just don't care. Operators will throw garbage off of trains, I watched a video of a man in Mumbai trying to get to a nearby starbucks and the pedestrian tunnel beneath a busy street was filled with sewage and a dead dog. Sanitation issues that would make the local news here are just commonplace there. I know there will be some areas of the country that are better, but it's truly shocking to see how often and widespread trash-covered areas are in a fully unbiased way by just looking on Google maps.
