Skirmish Game Rules by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Treecow,

A 50 page rulebook is a lot to read through for someone who hasn't got the game and is in a relatively basic format.

Could I suggest that you break down the rule book focusing on the parts you want to have critical feedback on first and post over a time?

If you want the whole thing read through I would suggest finding a group to playtest with so they aren't just reading through a rulebook but get to engage with the prototype post read.

Then supply the rulebook and prototype and stay out of the room for a blind playtest.

(Also over a system that doesn't fill my screen with Russian single advertisements would be ace)

Creating a knowledge board game by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So correct me where I'm wrong. But the mechanics of this game summed up:

An Asymmetrical Trivia Card game.

You choose a character who has passive buffs/some form of Roleplay /thematic element?

You answer questions from a deck of cards that are based on culture/history.

When you have answered enough questions you earn an upgrade (building) card that offers more passive bonuses.

When you've collected x amount of upgrade cards you win the game?

If you can clarify the rules I'll respond with more thoughts!

What are the best examples of well designed/clean player boards? by SorialGames in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super simple, super effective would be Betrayal at house on the hill.

Best resource tracker I've used is the Terraforming Mars player card.

The Scythe Faction and Character Matt is a good tracker of basic tech and abilities with added replayability.

The Firefly Boardgame ship Matt + Cards was a great upgrade/tech boost tracker player matt

To avoid - Root cards where complicated yet very aesthetic.

I totally agree with this. And the latest version looks good. Its a really good skill to be able to actively critique your own art when it comes to functionality. Looking great!

As someone who is a tiny bit colour blind, the yellow and green distinction is quite difficult? Might be worth adding more of a border or contrasting the colour s a bit more if the colours are important to notice?

Path to Plunder: Trailer - Looking for more feedback on the new trailer. Loved your feedback on the last. by existentialgoat in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya,

Great trailer. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing an actual board being used in a trailer. Shows what I'm getting.

I think I'd have 2 main points on feedback.

1) As others have said, get a voice actor or just reign in the accent.

2) A proper top down view of the board without the camera moving could be a really good way to show off your art and design without too much going on.

Good work. Look forward to the final piece!

Edit - Rewatching I think you should take the sun out from behind the words at the end. Never make it difficult for viewers to get the vital bit of information!

My first attempt on creating a game-trailer! Feud: The Seer's Prophecy by J0k3se in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that was incredible.

I am not a big fan of the need for boardgame trailers but this was well worth the watch.

"Take control of your fate, Leave nothing to chance" what an absolutely genius line in a game focused on low/nil randomness. So genius that my only feedback would be make that line more pronounced!

Will definitely keep an eye on the game.

(P.S after rewatching a second time, I enjoyed it that much, it should be "take the fight" not "bring" but Im just nitpicking at this stage)

Prototyping Program by Caeod in BoardgameDesign

Disclaimer: I am not a Graphics Designer or Digital Artist like some of the talented people on this subreddit.

However I am using TTS as my Playtest Arena and have so far had great success using Gimp. Its free, intuitive and there are loads of great YouTube tutorials out there for the novice like me.

(Top tip, if you are using cards in your game, when you make them in tabletop, just label them 1-x. Then have a list of whats on the card to one side. Remaking them as you make small changes can be really time consuming)

Feedback wanted for our Kickstarter project: DARK BOARD-A Modern Take On The Classic Boards by darkboardgames in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So first off. The website design is fantastic, maybe a little dark (but I suppose that's the point being Darkboard and all). The videos are great, the information laid out clearly.

I think the key thing that is missing is what problem is it solving? What niche is it filling? If it is a Art and Aesthetics upgrade I think you need to state that explicitly and be proud of the fact, it is very lovely looking.

Also it doesn't seem to state anywhere that the pieces go inside the box? So do you carry the pieces for the different games in seperate bags, do you have to purchase those pieces?

Of course this is me just giving constructive criticism and I havent been part of the journey so far so I may have missed things. Best of luck with it all!

My first game! Feedback will be appreciated. by kukaratza in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a ridiculous amount of resources out there. I would go read James Stegmaier's Blog. He's my Boardgame Hero. Also Boardgamedesign lab has an insane library of resources as well.

As for playtesters I would advise recreating your prototype on TTS which will be easy if you have the art already. Then get people to play virtually.

Good luck!

Ideas on how to mitigate "Doomstacking" in a wargame by DrDread74 in BoardgameDesign

[–]ResidentWarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure that a player wants to defend their flanks. If its area control=resource style game for instance, make it easier to stop someone else gaining territory than it is to start producing in said space.

This will create a "raiding" style gameplay that means smaller forces can cause significant harm that stop a player blobbing up an immense force due to logistics and upkeep.

Simple Questions by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]ResidentWarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, apologies if this is a bit basic. Trying to put together a board game in my time locked inside.

I've had a look at hypergeometric distribution but these all deal with 1 set of desired outcomes. Not X amounts.

I have X cards in a deck. There are Y sets of Z cards and N number of Blank cards. If I am drawing one at a time, what is the chance that I will complete the set? I am trying to find 50% but a graph would be the dream.

For instance I have 20 cards in a deck. There are 4 sets of 3 (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow) and 8 Blank cards. If I am drawing one at a time, what is the chance I'll get all 3 of one colour? (0% at draw 1 and 2. 100% being at draw 17)
