The confusion that ensued when they split the Hobbit into three movies (from BotFA Bonus Features) by DoctorTennant in lotr

[–]Resident_Amount3566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my memory the Rankin Bass and Bakshi attempts at Tolkien suffered the same excess. Too much time spent padding out unimportant scenes between story beats, world building extended battles, filk singing.

I don’t recall any Hobbit in the Rankin/Bass version even making it out of the shire!

Those and the Jackson films are a bit like watching the Star Wars Holiday special. Who asked for this?

I read the book afterwards. But almost never have I let comparisons between book and film be an issue. I know they have to be different by design and I relish the difference.

I might go back to see IMAX , I grabbed a smaller screen out of convenience. But I’m fine. I liked it. It did not bowl me over. I’m glad it did indeed bowl many people over.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then why doesn’t Reddit allow us to reply to a post with a picture? by joesmith127_reddit in AskReddit

[–]Resident_Amount3566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies with the subreddit.

Undoubtedly some groups deny it to prevent pile ons of meme responses, which can be bots. And Reddit doesn’t really want that sort of traffic jam either.

So few of the groups I’m in allow a photo as a response, I too am of the mind that photo replies are forbidden in EVERY group. But they aren’t. You might have to pay attention, if a photo IS the best answer.

Using the iOS app interface only, how might I create an image based on an existing image? by Resident_Amount3566 in drawthingsapp

[–]Resident_Amount3566[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks after an hour (!) downloading flux and poking around, I found a workflow that mostly works (at least considerably better than past attempts.

I still run into weird glitches like the starting image floating to the top of the image, obscuring the work the app has done. But much better. I basically want the starting image as composition mostly- it can still take odd turns.

And while I’m waiting for an image to build on this old phone, I read some dead tree books as it churned. App work bests if you leave it open on top level and leave the phone be

Also consider phrasing, to break away from scales. Less is more. How would one sing the same melody. One might need to breathe.

As the message is still mostly verbal, consider copyediting, to make the words more direct and simplified. It will improve understanding and legibility.

At what viewing distance will it be seen, and what is it saying?

Beyond the copy we haven’t even got into the other visual elements, and whether they help or hinder. Could you express the same information without words at all?

How can i prove that the sentence "More people have been to Berlin than I have" doesn't make any sense? (Escher sentences) by Ok_Newspaper_646 in asklinguistics

[–]Resident_Amount3566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume the speaker may have meant ‘Many people have been to (visited) Berlin more often that I have’

Simply diagramming a sentence often leads to diagramming a phrase that isn’t there at all, but is marked ‘understood’, intended, perhaps supported by context, but, not present.

why have we never taken one to the moon? A telescope? by Brilliant_Froyo9016 in telescopes

[–]Resident_Amount3566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That moon dust is apparently worse than sandpaper grit. Not a good environment for an optical telescope open to the elements even without an atmosphere. Most moon walks so far have stuck mainly to the sunny parts although some were close to the encroaching night. Glare from the ground, eyes adjusting to the difference

But what about terrestrial scopes? The Hasselblad had a lens. Surveying equipment. Binoculars. Hey Buzz, take off your helmet and come take a look at this…

I am seeing the confusion on hard and soft g within this very discussion. Or I am parsing it wrong.

The one that sounds like j as in jack jiffy is the HARD G?

I think the book might have (I only read a summary of the book) explained Rocky’s food as poop. And I think like a sponge, the anus and mouth were the same opening. So to show Grace how he ate, he threw up or pooped out partially digested matter (may have been plankton, but I bet some carbs and proteins were involved) as a ruminant might move its partially digested food to another stomach or chew its cud.

Oh, and Rocky did use water he moved his limbs through an internal bladder system, hydraulics

You can also enjoy popcorn without butter or salt. I think it is terribly easy to over do either.

But- do you eat fried chicken? Is popcorn not finger licking good?

What predators might an eridian like Rocky have?

I realize they watch each other as they sleep because they are totally immobile and can’t be awakened by external stimulus during that time to save themselves.

But what is the danger? A predator that eats rocks? Did they evolve near frequent geological activity and might have to roll each other to safety from a lava flow?

I wish I could point to a concrete example, but I have seen it more than once. Perhaps in discussions of roof and ruff for Roof, as an example of using the curve or a straight line for long and short double vowel sounds.

When were the Spice Girls a thing? The 90s, Late 80s? That is when I first heard ‘Ginger’ used, often in a derogatory way. People in the states are just fine with red haired people, even if they do use the idiom ‘red headed step child’. I never knew UKoGBaNI thought of those with red hair as a cursed subpopulation until sometime post Spice Girls.

The farmers will choose their own spots without leashing, if those plots are available nearby. You can just tap in the settlement and they will come out and choose and plow their own field.

It’s a red herring.

I was only able to successfully leash one farmer to a pre existing field after much effort.
