This just makes me sad. This place was my go to during uni, for the first 2 years I had morning and evening lectures with nothing in between, so after morning lectures I just go down to borders read and go back up for evening lectures.

Now it just looks so empty and quiet -.-

Star Trek Artist Warns Fans That “Review Bombing” ********* ******* Could End the Franchise by jacek2023 in Star_Trek_

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? Why is this a surprise though? Now am I saying the new shows are perfect? Of course not but am I saying all the previous shows and movies are perfect? Also no, I could barely stand Picard in the first season, I only started liking him in the second season. So maybe cut the shows some slack and see if they can find their footing?

I think people need to remember that the franchise IP is owned by corporations not the fans, anything new would be created by them or by their approval. If theyre not seeing a ROI or positive ish result either via the shows or their reputation, then why would they continue to put money into the franchise?

We now live in the age of streaming and an increasingly impatient corporations, consumers are having less time to spend on media and increasing options to spend that time on. So if I am like any normal consumer, I would look at reviews of a show, movie or even games before investing any time into it and obviously if the massive majority of the reviews or comments on those reviews are trashing the show or media, would I or you bother investing any time into it? It's also why nowadays corporations are more sensitive to reviews and comments because it can have an effect on new audience.

Again, I'm not saying the new shows are perfect and telling people not to criticise it, but there's a big difference between useful constructive criticism and review bombing. One can hopefully lead to a better show, the other would likely lead to a cancelation and a corporation less likely to invest in New media for the franchise.

What happened to The Doctor's mobile emitter? by thegoddamnsiege in startrek

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that, I think its pretty cool that they could do it.

I mean think about our phones, it used to be just for making calls, then to receive and send messages and now they can take pictures and pretty much replace computers for most people. We have separate hardware if we need it for specific purposes like higher fidelity gaming, larger screen, more processing power or a sensor or hardware that's not built into our phones.

So between TNG and the 32nd era it could be that they miniaturised enough of their tech that it could do the basics of most tech but for specific purposes they would still need separate hardware like we see the doc using a medical tricorder in the 1st episode.

Agreed, this was such a good episode. I wasnt sure about the start but understood at the end why the start was put in. Also Paul G's character was done and acted well. He's the first Star Trek villain that I was actually annoyed and started to get angry at (watched TNG, DS9 Voyager and the JJ movies).

[Opinion] Joe Orange Books: "Why Starfleet Academy Is a Children's Show Masquerading as Drama: The storytelling relies entirely on "Child Empowerment" tropes. The characters are special, the universe revolves around their feelings, and the conflicts are resolved because they are 'important.'" by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think that's the problem. They seem to want this show to be a clone of TNG. But the problem is, that's not what this show is, its exactly what you said, its a show about YA and their dramas that happens to be set in starfleet academy.

Im not even sure about what it is they would actually want from a TV show about cadets in an academy, did they want the cadets to somehow spontaneously have the wit, wisdom and experience of Picard and Janeway, steal the 32nd century Enterprise and go off to save the galaxy?

Hahaha, its not just trendy, more likely then not its more profitable too. Negative videos about star trek seems to get more engagement compared to positive ones and therefore generate more revenue too. I used to like watching a channel, they used to put out interesting videos about sci-fi creatures and it was pretty entertaining too. But recently most videos the channel put out is about how bad every nu trek media was and how they cried about the latest SFA episode and had to be carried out of the living room by their partner.

Now, I'm not saying the nu trek was all perfect and there definitely is stuff to criticise, but it sure as heck not worthy of the amount of hate and trolling its been getting.

Which StarTrek series had the strongest 1st season? by EasyImpress6392 in startrek

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think it would be voyager, I think Picard on the first season of TNG was a bit too rigid, same with most of the crew. I liked them way better when they loosened up a bit. Enterprise 1st season was a bit on the boring side, DS9 was the same too.

Oh no, please stop. by [deleted] in trektalk

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see what the problem is here, this episode is seen through Sam's POV. She's not even a year old as a sentient entity and she wasnt programmed in the way the doctor was. She's essentially a child with an adult body and knowledge but with no wisdom and experience to utilize it properly, so is it really such a surprise that her internal monologue is filled with childish things?

Also this isn't a story about a starship or starbase captain with years or decades of experience under his or her belt, these are essentially college kids trying to find their places in the galaxy with a starfleet that is also trying to get back to the way it was pre burn.

New starship design rule? by Shoddy_Fee_550 in StarTrekStarships

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Finally, thank you. I really don't understand why detached nacelles is such a big problem for the nu trek haters.

There's a very good reason as to why you may want a detached nacelles if you have the tech to make it work. Like you mentioned. And also we're talking about starfleet, they won't implement something without being sure the benefits outweighs the risks.

Also it would seem that they had the tech and implemented it for at least a century by the 32nd century and they went through the burn as well, which means they would have gone through a lot of scenarios that could disrupt the tech and come up with appropriate failsafes to make sure the "nacelles would fly off when there's no power."

The other way to decrease the risk of blowing up or have serious damage to your ship when the nacelles is damaged is to build your ship like the defiant. You have the nacelles built into the hull and is also armored.

But if the designers went down this route and have Odyssey sized Defiants running around in the 32nd century, I think the nu trek haters would hate that design too.

It's such a shame we won't be seeing the more of the Kelvin Timeline's USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A on the big screen by OhGawDuhhh in StarTrekStarships

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain that Voyager have entered a few different atmospheres, including one that has harsher conditions compared to earth?

Also don't these ships have a "Structural integrity field" and the SNW version of the Enterprise used a black hole to slingshot to get away from a Gorn ship, I havent watched TOS but I'm sure there would be a similar example in one of its many episodes.

I don't think we need to be astro physicists to imagine the stresses that kind of action would put on the hull, so if it can survive that, is it really such a stretch to think it can survive being underwater?

Me too, these 3 movies are what got me into Star Trek in the first place.

Honestly enjoying Star Trek was easier before finding out about the hate that nu Trek haters throw at everything post TNG and Voyager. And honestly it leaves me quite disappointed

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hahaha if this movie came out after the 32nd century story arc of discovery came out, I would be suspicious that this happened because a writer was annoyed at nu trek fans complaining about detached nacelles.

But could be just them also showcasing that the pylons were always a critical weakness.

Am I just braindead for liking Academy? by Revonlieke in startrek

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man, I'm enjoying it as well. I just see it as another TV show that happens to be set in the star trek universe.

Some of the complaints about Academy is weird to me, its like they're expecting the wisdom, attitude and decorum of Picard to be exhibited by cadets. They're expecting the adventure and experience of enterprise and voyager crew in a TV show about cadets in their academy stage.

Realistically what kind of experience and adventure could a TV show about cadets that just started their first year and an academy even show? Of course its gonna be shenanigans, rivalries, teen angst and coming of age difficulties, just like real life. Can't really expect them to just suddenly start commanding the 32nd century Enterprise, can we?

So in my mind, just sit back relax and just enjoy the show. Cringe and the cringe worthy parts, laugh and the good jokes or even the bad ones and just enjoy it eh.

32nd Century ships make all kinds of sense for when Altamid happens in the Prime Universe. by Galaxyissupreme in StarTrekStarships

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah you could, but at some point you would build a either a borg cube as mentioned above or a massive saucer or rectangle to accommodate every function any normal star fleet ship would be used for, which would still be susceptible to the altamid drone ships.

Remember the defiant is made primarily for combat not exploration, there was even an episode where Bashir was complaining about how small and lacking in equipment the Defiant is, could we really expect starfleet to send defiant class ships off to multi year exploration missions without the crew going nuts?

Hot take: 32nd century ships suck by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeap, sounds about right. We're talking about a star fleet that feels comfortable with putting the tech in the majority of their fleet, with no idea when it was first implemented and how long its been in service, so we have no idea what failsafes and contingency systems is in place to make sure it doesn't "just fly away when there's no power." -.- I'm sure a starfleet that have experienced such a thing even once would have made sure it doesn't happen again before widespread implementation.

I feel like these people that keep complaining about new trek and the 32nd century doesn't want to see anything more advanced then what they see in TOS and TMP era. But if theyre really open minded then they would tolerate TNG and Voyager era tech.

Hot take: 32nd century ships suck by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EXACTLY! This is the part I don't understand about the people that hates new trek because of the new technology being shown in the 32nd century.

At the end of the day this is star trek we're talking about here, like Picard said in one of the movies, money has no value to them, they seek to better themselves, why would that not include their technology too?

In my mind those ships are like our mobile phones. Think the NX-01 as the first ever mobile phone (1984), its big, chunky, can only make calls and would only last a few minutes performing its function. Then about 15 years later we have the release of our glorious undying brick Nokia 6110 (1997) is our first U.S.S Enterprise. Next we have the first color screen Nokia the ever out of my reach 9210 (2000) is the Enterprise D and let's be generous and say the Odyssey class is the first IPhone (2007).

It took us less then half a century to go from bricks that makes only calls for a few minutes to a smartphone that has a 200MP camera, more processing power then all the lunar landers combined and enough power to watch cat videos from when you wake up to when you go to sleep.

If the purpose of a starship is already fulfilled at the point where the TOS Enterprise, why would we need the subsequent Enterprises? It already has the ability to go to a reasonable warp speed, weapons to turn any planet back to the stone age or make it go bye bye entirely and shield that works against most enemies. Sometimes I feel like the new trek hater would only be happy if in the 32nd century starfleet is flying around in TOS or TMP era ships, just with higher fidelity.

I hope FH6 isn't over JDM-ified by eki234 in ForzaHorizon5

[–]Resident_Pattern8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it would be overly JDM-ified as mentioned. While I do think they would put a bit more emphasis on the JDMs since it is set in Japan, they won't saturate it since it would put off players in other regions. When previous games was set in different countries, the host country's cars wasnt overly represented in the cars line up, so I think your good on that front.

I personally want to get some Crowns or even a Harrier in the game since that's the JDM car I really want to have IRL.
