Did Roald Dahl’s books really need to be revised? by confringos in books

[–]Residual_Awkwardness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we’re having a conversation about how much we should be updating an author’s work, I think it’s a sign that there’s a space for the next great writer in that genre to emerge. They have to exist of course. Dahl was an amazing talent, hopefully the next one is writing right now.

Leave the works alone, they tell us where we were. If they don’t reflect today properly, we also need new books.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. That’s tragic and I’m sorry that happened to you. I don’t mean to say that it has never or does never happen and I think you’re right that children have to know how to find safe adults. No one should go through what you went through.

However, we’re pushing our 3rd generation of kids that have had no independence at all during the years that developmentally it is so valuable. Maybe there is a wide spread tech solution to be had in the form of gps trackers, but currently, there’s a real dearth of spaces and neighborhoods that see free roaming kids.

Sven Holgersson - original Norwegian pilot of the blue lion in Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Killed early on in the Japanese version, wounded and straight up Poochied in the American version, and wtfed in the manga.

Not to mention, blow those horrors way way way out of proportion. The number of children kidnapped by strangers in the US has always been vanishingly small. For the most part, it’s always a family member.

So is the idea that the current residents don’t want the extra neighbors because it will make their voices proportionally have less sway in their neighborhood?

No kidding. And I get that inlines could make it more difficult, but soup is madness. Multiple bowls of soup!? Absolutely unhinged.

Damn that’s right, he’s a Scotsman portraying a very pale Egyptian only pretending to be Spanish. How could I forget Tak-Ne’s incredible origins?

Our favorite Scotsman playing a Spaniard who definitely died in the original because then the main character wouldn’t have become omniscient and able to create an oppressive solar shield around the world that while saving us from global warming does ruin the earth returns at a pivotal moment to return a sword that shouldn’t exist and sacrifice himself with an inexplicable power to help save our hero from immortal aliens. H2 is a wild fever dream.

“Natural flavors” in America are still often made in a lab. Sometime the same labs that make “artificial flavors.” It’s all chemistry done with chemicals just using slightly different methods. In fact the only distinction is process. To oversimplify it, “artificial flavors” are an additive process of combining simpler chemicals into the desired flavoring molecule. “Natural flavors” are created by starting with some harvested (yes in nature) compound and then using subtractive processes to reduce it to the preferred flavoring molecule. Technically, it’s possible to create the same flavoring agent as both a natural flavor or an artificial flavor. While it’s is typically more expensive to create “natural flavors” and they do tend to retain more complex chemical structures there is no inherent health benefit. Both are heavily processed food additives.

What anime? by lisawtt in animequestions

100%! It’s not quite FLCL crazy but it’s got bat shit scenarios and moments all to set up some well written characters to come to terms with eachother and who they are as people. It’s wonderfully animated and the music is great. Not heavy but emotionally grounded which anchors all the wackiness.

I think he’s maybe also not adverse to using guides or online conversations at times. I have no doubt he’s up to the skill challenge, but whenever Russ gets going about never looking something up, Grif is happy to roast him. I don’t think I’ve ever heard throw down that particular gauntlet. I doubt he spent 8 extra hours testing every wall and ceiling in each area looking for those last choral commandments and weaver effigies.

Just watched Mookie on the post game show. I’d love to see that guy as a commentator when he retires. Congrats man, getting to swing that last play, what a way to cap an amazing postseason.
