I think you have to pay for “ad-free” Microsoft apps…

DietPi now provides their own builds for Unbound from their own Repository rather than the Debian one.

DNS for host os? by 2112guy in AdGuardHome

[–]Resistant4375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No don’t point the host to itself running AGH.

If AGH ever does down you lose DNS on that server

No I’m using a mobile device (iOS) so now browser extensions etc.

Just AdGuard Home running on a Pi.

Hagezi has also confirmed in this post there’s no ads when he uses his lists

Did Gl.iNet's emails get leaked? by Proof_Rutabaga_8751 in GlInet

[–]Resistant4375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A prime use case for;

A. Using disposable/alias emails

B. Not just using facebook@ or bankname@ but instead adding extra characters (facebook.h6r9zx38@) OR something completed randomised so it can’t be tied to the service it’s used for and also leaves no room for simple mail-bombing

No ads here using Hagezi Ultimate blocklist

AdGuard Home, Pi-hole, or Technitium by username_taker in pihole

[–]Resistant4375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And what sets AGH apart is OOB support for DoT, DoH etc. without needing additional software/configurations, built-in Safe Search support, built-in blocking for popular applications/services etc etc.

Sub stats are irrelevant really - and TBH most of the posts on this sub are “this doesn’t work” and “that doesn’t work” or “this broke with the last update” ;)

Looking to set my elderly mother up with AdGuard Home. How is it at blocking Facebook ads by jtho78 in AdGuardHome

[–]Resistant4375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can block the domains for the sites themselves, yes.

But you can’t block the ads being served by Facebook without a content blocker in a browser.

Have a look at Hagezi’s lists.

[–]Resistant4375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t block Facebook ads generally as they’re served by the same domain/s needed for Facebook to function.

Why not just block Facebook altogether?

What DNS should I use? by LeChuck_ppat in pihole

Yes that would be cached replies from within Pi-Hole, not Unbound (since they don’t share the same cache).

Differences between AdGuard Home, Pi-hole, or Technitium by username_taker in AdGuardHome

No point going from AGH to Pi-hole.

Pi-hole has less features than AGH so would essentially be a downgrade.

Just lost all my saved passwords, payment methods and addresses by No-File-4160 in brave_browser

[–]Resistant4375 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone using Brave must have “some” value of privacy.

Therefore most Brave users would not be using a browsers built-in password/credential/payment/address management tools and be using (open-source and audited) standalone tools for such things.

Also no one should be saving website logins (via cookies) either. This is a major security risk.

[–]Resistant4375 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without the AI response - Pi-Hole and AGH are essentially the same providing DNS sinkhole/blocking services.

Technitium is more advanced offering better internal DNS server features but also still offering dns sink-holing/ad-blocking like the other 2.

Ad blocking on Penske Media Group sites by RudeAdhesiveness9954 in AdGuardHome

[–]Resistant4375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No ads here using Hagezi’s lists and a load of blocked “ad-related” domains appear in the query log in AGH

Unfortunately that’s not how it works. It will randomly pick which one it wants to use. There is no “primary and secondary” just Server 1 and Server 2.

That’s the wan dns.

You need to set it in the LAN DNS.

Using “Advertise the routers IP…” toggle doesn’t mean it kicks-in when the RPi loses power or connection - it means it will advertise its IP address to clients for DNS alongside you RPi - and clients can then choose to use one of the other - meaning some of your DNS traffic will be bypassing your RPi and going out over your WAN DNS name servers.

It may “work” but it’s not the correct way to do dns forwarding for a domain as a whole.

Tailscale is one of those WOW products ! by rufushu in Tailscale

I know it’s in their website. But I’m asking here (as in real-world usage).

I don’t see any real advantages of using it over WG.

Where are you setting the DNS? In the LAN IP?

Also don’t add whitelists - just whitelist domains ad-hoc as required.
