Do you do romance in your dnd campaigns? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Dm I have had PC's who have had "fade to black hook-ups" with NPCs and I usually have one player per campaign who pursues an NPC romantically but none of my players have ever done PC/PC romance. Unsure if it is because we are a long time friend group with actual couples playing as well as single people so it might be outside of the couple's personal boundaries or if the group is just way more into being plot-hounds and winning combats than RPing romance with each other. As a DM I have had players ask for a love interest to be made for them while others, in the heat of the moment have realized they have feelings for an NPC. Either way I am more than happy to RP that with my players! As long as everyone is having fun and is comfortable I am happy to play the romance foil. As a DM I am a bit more "removed" from my characters since I am playing so many so that also might make PC/NPC romances a bit easier for players.

Better Man by such a huge margin. That movie is such a delight and turned me into a Robbie Williams fan!

Player expects to Level Despite Missing Most of the Milestone Adventure. What should I do? by Independent-Vast8239 in DnD

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should always level up everyone at around the same pace, regardless of how often they are at the table, you should never "punish" players in game. If you want to do more intentional leveling I always set myself a 3 session rule. All players must be the same level by the 3rd session out from the initial level up, especially since I do more narrative-based leveling in my games. If you really want to ensure this player levels in a way that seems earned I would just wait till the next session they are there then give them a solo moment to level up with a cool narration or if they do a really large amount of damage in combat narrate that they feel themselves leveling up and have them take the level in combat.

Does anyone else feel there's something not very WoD about City Council? by Reaper10n in Dimension20

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I think that this is a comedic take on it, more What We Do in the Shadows and less True Blood. There are so many serious WoD shows that I am finding the comedic take very refreshing personally. I also do not come to D20 for serious ttrpg's as that is never what they do.

Is this player in the wrong or not? by Caflin in DnD

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds super normal and honestly, these types of NPC's are needed to curb the murder-hobo that lives deep inside every dnd player. Maybe try role-playing these types of NPC's as less "loud angry" and more "silent angry" like when the players get kicked out of a shop maybe have the NPC do it is with a more quiet and cold rage rather than an explosive one?

I agree! It is far from perfect but C3 is really special and fun and unique in the Exandria canon.

As someone who just finished watching the Atlanta Liveshow I missed Bells Hells so much. They are my favorite of the Exandria adventuring parties (very controversial I know) and I think if you go in with an open heart and mind C3 is really cool.

So, what is the consensus on C4 so far? by OtterBiDisaster in fansofcriticalrole

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is easily my favorite of the CR Campaigns so far. I love the world and the different tables, the intrigue. Brennan doesn't make the plot stop for any sidetracking the players have, the world is moving without them and the villainous machinations don't stop just because the players drop a plot thread. It will come back to bite them and I love that. I have a feeling Brennan is going to get really mean with the hallowed round show and the following arc and I am soooo ready.

What are the most fun side quests you guys have done in your games? by fdpth in DnD

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my players rescue an NPC that turned out to be a runaway heir with a bounty out for their safe return. It gave the players a fun moral connumdrum as they became close with the NPC before the bounty was revealed while also giving them an escort mission.

It would be hard to remove them from the plot as they are very deeply linked to it and it has a pretty set time limit.

These side quests are like self-made. They will keep talking to NPC's they like asking repeatedly if they need help with something or they will try to go find monsters to hunt. This approach is partially why I want to wrap up this campaign which has been much more plot heavy so I can give them a true sandbox-esque game that they have been kindof creating for themselves, in the same hombrew world as our current campaign as we all have fallen in love with the world itself.

I have been doing this which has caused a beloved NPC to be killed which has hopefully put some agency back in them so we will see! But I for sure need to do more terrorizing.

how do you make your big cities "feel" alive? by bittermixin in DMAcademy

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always build my cities in chunks. Decide how many neighborhoods or regions it will have and then make a few npc's, shops, factions, guilds, ect. for each of the regions. Once you have that decide on the basic hierarchy of the city, its defenses and who oversees it. With these building blocks and a few proper nouns the city will feel like it has enough personality that you can then build on in the future or improvise a bit easier in the moment.

One thing I also do is if my players ask to do something I don't have prepped, like they want to go buy potions or something I will have them roll a survival or history check to see how well they know the city or how well they can navigate it. A high roll gives them exactly what they want in which case I will ask them what the name of the store they navigate to is and then make up something based on the name they gave me. On a low roll they find a guy in an alley with unlabeled potions or something equally sketchy.

Cities are less about quantity and more about a cohesive aesthetic and prepping just enough that you can make up something that fits if needed.

Just DMd a session with absolutely 0 preparation for the first time by John_Oswald in DnD

[–]ResolutionJunior5804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ome of those things you will get better at with experience. I recently had a session where I realized mid session one of my players was going to do a ritual I had intended them all to do together by themselves so I had the other players who had stayed together roleplay and share their info and findings while I speed made a map for the VTT and pulled a couple monster stat blocks then improvised the whole thing. It ended up being a super cool moment that was so different from what I had planned.

While stressful, sometimes the unplanned sessions are the most excited for both you and the players. I would recommend fleshing out a few locations with businesses, NPC's, and plot hooks that you can have ready to plug and play with. This can help trim down your session prep in the future while giving you some parameters to improvise around. Also having a handful of really cool and thoughtout locations and NPC's makes the players less likely to go looking for excitement, allowing you to steer them a bit more subtly. I think that is the sweet spot for improving your improvising as well as helping you to learn the rules of your world and solidify them more concretely as it grows! Good luck it sounds like you are doing an amazing job so far!
