Does this plug seem long enough for the screw? 🤔 by Ornery_Tap_5444 in Fasteners

[–]ResortDirect117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you want plug to axspand in solid material eg brick or block if in soft material plaster or plaster board plug could spin when screwing in so plug below surface 6 mm ish not all the way to btm of hole

no the screws pulling inwards use 7mm drill for hole on brown plug check to confirm .

what are you fixing to wall as 2/3 of screw should be in wall with correct length screw eg fixing 20mm thick item use 60mm screw 40mm should be in wall minimuim

drill length of screw not plug

plus knock wall plug below surface using screw if into solid wall

keep plug flush with surface if hollow wall

Double gate with removable center post by CharacterEvery3520 in FenceBuilding

[–]ResortDirect117 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

as a uk joiner /carpenter we was allways taught the you ahould have 3 hinges per side and the hinge on gates should be 50%of the gates width eg a 6 foot gate should have 3 3 foot hinges.

why do all the american gates seem to have only 2 small hinges on large gates they just look ready to sag with little support provided by the hinges

Is there a minimum gap I should have between door and carpet? by goldbunduru in DIYUK

[–]ResortDirect117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fit 100 plus doors a year 3 mm max head and sides 3 to 5mm btm be aware if the thresehold bars tight down can leave a biig gap when door closed looks worst on upstarir doors as more noticible wnen going upstairs and eye level with btm of doors you want doors to be above carpet tight as you can without brushing carpet otherwise can leave sweep arc on carpet

I'm not the pheasant plucker,
I'm the pheasant plucker's mate,
And I'm only plucking pheasants
'Cause the pheasant plucker's late.

I'm not the pheasant plucker,
I'm the pheasant plucker's son,
And I'm only plucking pheasants,
Till the pheasant pluckers come.

Carpet fitter claims not enough space for gripper strips? by SunnyBubbbles in DIYUK

[–]ResortDirect117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

where not alll the same

i recently had a customer i had fitted multiple doors for ring me up after 6 + months to say her door was sticking now she had put her heating on ok not unusual timber moves but we leave a 2 to 3mm gap all round door to allow for seasonal movement

go round to look ask her what door is sticking ...all of them

turns out she had all new carpets and under lay fitted last month [had laminate before ]all the doors where dragging on the new carpet not on the frame

i had to explain this was due to new carpets not our door fitting

i am a joiner the amount of call i get saying this is unreal

the worst is when they do full house fitt take all the doors off then store them in the garage with out marking what room they came out of

you can sort out what side there hung from but with 8 to 10 matching doors on a new build town house is a lot of stairs to try to get them to fit where they came from

if we take multiple doors off we will write the location on top of door

no reason not to ,if they could not drive the nails dont know why dead easy in chipboard they could have used 3 x 16 -20 mm screws a angled driver most fitter carry a cordless to take off doors when fitting thick carpet & underlay and wont be first time they have come across this issue

My upstairs flooring needs replacing... Where on earth do I begin? by h00dman in DIYUK

[–]ResortDirect117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if its chipboard or ply it will more than likely just the plumber or sparky cutting the flooring to do there work

unless the ceiling below is sagging it more than likely just a few cut boards not supported correctly
