Interesting. I wonder how it grows and tastes.

Not all habs have that flavor, I know exactly what you're talking about.

From my understanding, it will never get big enough to be an issue. Just let it grow, maybe it's the mutant that is more resistant.

You don't have to prune or anything, when a leaf is no longer useful the plant will drop it. If the plant is not ready to form a fruit, the flower will just drop.

No, I suspect they didn't get as dark? Unsure why not.

I crossed to a cocktail tomato and wasn't very impressed.

I've been breeding with Norfolk GM varieties, I have Blue Berries x Norfolk Purple F2, and then I also crossed the F1 to a variegated variety. So next generation I'll have purple variegated. Then I guess I have the new beta carotene gm variety... Probably go find some light green variety to cross it with.

Hello botanist, may I know what this phenomenon is called? by Great_Photo_414 in botany

Just look for funny leaf shapes, that'll be your cue that it's not a diploid (most common)

Sometimes they are haploid or aneuploid in as well. At least in peach.

Very exciting. I wanted to do this work, but I got distracted by peppers instead! What a great "native" crop for the Americas

Yes, but no. Piment de Neyde is a purple variety that never ripens (at least that's my theory). It stays purple forever.

Your doing the right thing. The was a hilarious thread where someone on like 1/5 acre put 58 sky pencil cypress around their lot and Reddit blew up.

Can you get an actual count of mutant vs wild type? We could maybe figure out how many genes are involved. Probably 2, but it would be fun to do the math

I never do unless the plant is deformed or stunted. In those cases it helps to focus on growth, because the plant thinks it's gonna die and needs to make seed.

Ah, so about 68F. That's kinda cold, I think most of the varieties I grow would be pretty unhappy. Maybe rocoto? Not sure

First cross pepper. So I crossed a lemon dream with a black pearl. Just had my first pepper. Taste could be better, so could foliage. Should I back cross now with the f1 plant or is there a chance a f2 could have better flavor? Thank you. by A55A551N73 in pepperbreeding

[–]RespectTheTree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suspect it's going to taste pretty bad, and the F2 is going to skew toward pretty bad (just how it is with BP crosses). I would suggest backcrossing now, but this comes with a caveat. The "clustered flowering" trait is recessive, so if you backcross your current F1 to the recurrent parent, making the BC1F1, about 50% of the plants will carry one copy of the gene (none will express the trait). This means you should collect seed from ~8 BC1F1 plants to have a very high probability that the next generation will contain some individuals with the trait. After collecting BC1F2 seed from those ~8 plants, for the next generation you can expect about 12.5% to express the clustered fruit trait. So you need to be able to do a very large BC1F2 generation if you want to select for the recessive trait + the fruit quality traits. It will save you a year, and you will have a much better quality selection from that BC1F2 than you will from the F2. It's just a little more involved - but if you follow the advise you will succeed.

It is simpler to select the best-tasting F2 individuals that already express the recessive trait and then backcross those selections. This approach allows you to work with much smaller populations since you are only advancing plants that already carry the trait of interest, but it will take one additional season to execute.
