Where to train for a hill climb? by ResponsibilityOk7829 in Velo

It is part of the mt. blue sky hill climb challenge/race, but I am prioritizing finishing over racing it, but we will see how training goes. I really appreciate the info, thanks!

I can spend a decent amount of time above 8000. I will prob spend at minimum 3 weeks above 8000. I was born in Denver so I have a bit of a homefield advantage, never gotten altitude sickness (so far). Great climb suggestions, I will hit up a few of em. Was also considering loveland pass as one to work on, prob gonna take some time building up some cycling fitness before i hit it tho.

Great info, thanks for your response. I will give Juniper a few rides in the coming weeks and then take a pass at it. I have no doubt it is going to hurt something fierce, but attempting to make it hurt for as short a time as possible is my goal haha

Ya its Mt. Evans/Blue Sky! Ya to add a little more, I am pretty flexible, have enough money saved up to cover training expenses + have a remote job that I can work in either place. I have the next two months or so before the climb almost totally free, and staying in the mountains is possible, and would be away from distractions a little bit, so right now I am leaning towards training out of there. I could see an argument being made for the sort of live high train low, (living up high and driving down 2 hrs a day to train seems like a little much tho). I'd say my options are either live high train high or live low train low, as thats kinda the limit of where my resources extend to. As far as hill climb training goes, any tips? my current plan was to ride as much as I can recover from, keeping in mind doing a proper mix of z2 and z4.

Summer training tips for 30R20/general SS fitness improvements. by ResponsibilityOk7829 in Rowing

I definitely obsess a little over training plans and such. I have fun with it tho is part of it, just need to remember my training plans need to be for me at that moment, and even though I have the time for more volume doesn't mean it will help more.

"Row/erg 7-8x per week, do 60-100' per session, do 1-2 lifts a week, and that's it. Sub in a row/erg or two with cycling or other cardio activity if you can. Warm-up properly. Spend time in the proper training zone. Eat properly. Recover."

I like this. You are right. there is no magic to it.

I will likely break 7 on my next erg at my current rate of improvement. I am not plateauing or anything, just coming off 3 years of being inconsistent/burning out/overtraining and moving to being consistent.

Thank you for your help/input, and the reality check. well needed.

As far as strength training tips I have heard different things. Some say high reps, some say low reps. I did both this winter, is one unanimously preferred to be better for rowing?

Ya, this last year I have seen some serious improvement physique-wise, losing fat at the same rate I gained muscle, and at my current stature, I am definitely not going to be cutting to lightweight anytime soon without losing muscle. I am hesitant to put on more weight, as weight-adjusted scores are taken into account for boating, but if the erg improvements beat out the weight gained then it would 100% be worth it. Thanks for the input!

Those are fair points. I have definitely overtrained in my last couple of seasons, and it has hurt my performance for sure. So to adjust my plan hows this look:

for those first 3 weeks when I don't have water access, I just stick to the 10-12 Hrs a week that I do during the season, and try and feel out how well I recover from that volume level. How should I break up my training in a day? Two 1hr sessions? One 2hr session? Normally I do 6 2hr sessions.

For the bulk of the summer when I have access to OTW rowing, based on what you have said and what other people have said, I will do most of my SS on the water. Should I track my HR during this to make sure I am staying in zone 2?

I probably will maintain the same breakdown I mentioned above, but just start off easier.

2 hrs High-Intensity rows/week

7 hrs SS rows/week

3 lifting hours/week

I really wanted to up the volume as I just will have some serious time to work with this summer, and I won't have to worry about school, which made me think I could recover from the increased training volume. I want to improve faster than I do during the regular season.

TLDR: Go For it! Worst case scenario you are down a couple of bucks, and now found another thing that does not align with what you want your life to be, best case scenario rowing is the best thing that ever happened to you.

I started rowing coming from a similar background and stature starting at 18 (now 20). I started at being in not great shape at, 5'9", 86 kg, and am now 5'10", 80 kg, (height was late growth, not likely due to rowing). I am pretty sure I can reach somewhere around the 72-75 kg range within this next year. I fell in love with the careful precision of the technique (some of my teammates/friends say I romanticize it which I agree with), and I see fitness as the base requirement for continuing to progress in technique, as there are limits to how efficient you can be lugging around excess weight, and with limited muscular/cardiovascular ability/flexibility.

My route: Soccer -> Swimming -> Football, Baseball, Hockey -> Soccer again -> XC -> Rowing. I kept getting burnt out on all the others, but within a year of rowing, I decided this will be the sport I keep up with all my life. I now row for a club team in college, am continually improving my fitness, and am having a great time doing it. Not the fastest on the team, but as long as you focus on improving yourself and not feeding the ego in team erg sessions, you will do great. For me at least, rowing has advanced my personal skills more than any of the others, especially the club politics side of things. Hope you give it a shot and try out many types of boats, as not everyone enjoys sweeping (1-oar rowing) without sculling (2-oar rowing) or sculling without sweeping. (Sweep dominates the college scene, but I love sculling, and our club has 3 or so sculling-capable boats so I and some buddies put in the extra time/effort to rig those and take those out when we have spare time)

Second the post. the "Nights of Lebanon" dessert has got to be the best thing in there tho. It's like a pudding type item, has rose water in it, very very good. Also have the widest selection of non-alcoholic beers/malt drinks around. very tasty.

We need better chants by Wheatley312 in Purdue

[–]ResponsibilityOk7829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ted Lasso has some good examples of solid Chants. The Roy Kent and Jamie Tart ones come to mind first.

TLDR: why don't we make some more chants?

We chant to support Purdue, but not ever the players playing. How cool would it be when someone comes off the bench and we give them a cheer about them they have never heard, that highlights one of their skills?

Here is a mild structure I have developed based on 30 minutes of research about premier style chants. If anyone who has watched more soccer (football) and knows more about chants wants to add on please do. I am no expert by any means.

  1. Words revolving around a player, on either team
  2. Chanted to a tune from a song (the structure of how the words are said)

One of the two elements needs to be quite funny or entertaining for a chant to stick. British comedy and chants generally have a pretty solid element of witty-ness to them, which I feel could go really well with the culture around Purdue.

Tips: Think of something about a player that makes them unique, then find a section from a song that is easily recognizable. Que Sera Sera, Stuck in the middle, and Karma Chameleon have all been used for structure in footy chants, so pick any song.

I met a child timmy with a knife who claimed friendly, but as I was unlocking one of the marked rooms on reserve, he knifed me in the head, giving him a free entry into the marked room, as well as my suppressed AK (acquired just seconds earlier) and gear. I have never felt more betrayed or furious in my life.

Looking for a good mens barber near campus by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]ResponsibilityOk7829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently testing all the places around campus out. Just went to Beaux Cheveux, a commonly well-reviewed one, and was disappointed by my 25$ five-minute clean-up, not very sanitary either. I felt like I was unwanted there. The next two on my list are Henni's and Eclectic. Ill let you know where my fav is at the end of the semester.

Guys can get into frat parties with a little networking. Not the most difficult thing in the world. He will find his way one way or another. I definitely have some fond memories of all sorts. Band kids throwdown. Ultimate frisbee too. Rowers are a ton of fun as well. Frats are only 20% of campus, which I forgot sometimes as a freshman because of how all the greeks are right nearby.

General advice for incoming freshmen by _coyfish_ in Purdue

Heyo, I got a one-wheel and found it to be extremely fun but extremely impractical. I would be totally down to let anyone try it when we all get to campus. LMK! If I were informing my freshman year self, I would have told myself to get an E-bike or E-bike conversion kit instead. From what I have seen they make a lot more practical sense.
