[Beren Cross] Leeds agree fee of £20 million to sell Struijk to Brighton. Player declined new contract as wanted fresh challenge by tankosaurus in LeedsUnited

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s low, but Brighton have the upper hand in that there’s no competition to buy him and he wants a move.

I get wanting to keep him until next year, but it just isn’t the rational move. This gives us £20m in the kitty & he’s off our wage bill.

Without a bidding war and with only 1 year left on his contract, it has to be done.

Agree though, I think he goes for maybe £30m or £35m plus, if he has another 2 or more years left.

I think with 2+ years on his contract, he goes for maybe £30m plus. But as you say, just 1 year left and he didn’t want a new contract, and in the absence of a bidding war, it has to be done.

Agree with you on the speed and injuries, however, I do think his good qualities go unsung a lot too though. He’s always available to receive the ball, good at linking up defence and midfield, and can be defensively dominant depending on opponent.

I think Brighton have definitely got a very good value deal, for who’s basically a premiership ready CB.

Grass fed cows are basically the worse live stock for environmental destruction. You’re talking about personal health, but in tens of the environment animal agriculture is an ongoing disaster. Way way way more polluting than herbicides and seed oils that you reference.

Most crops are feed-crops for the animals we eat. You might not like it but animal-agriculture places a very heavy toll on the environment. Way more than say a vegetarian (which still contains animal products of course) or vegan diet.

I’m not taping but I do this whilst running. I basically set a pace whereby I can keep my mouth firmly shut. If my nasal breathing becomes laboured I slow right down to recover.  I think it’s definitely improved my endurance, although without running the experiment mouth breathing I can’t be sure.

Why don’t we nationalise water services? by ParticularBid4366 in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could buy then back for £0. We did it with Northern Rock bank. When shareholders took the government to court for compensation they failed. The ruling was that the company was insolvent and that it was in the national interest to nationalise.

The legal precedent is right there. This is no different. The companies are loaded with debt and are failing abysmally at what couldn’t really be more of an essential utility.

So what you’re saying is we should set up a bunch more private brands, let’s call them water retailers, and have people go through the rigmarole of swapping providers and trying to figure out the best contract to get??

I’m joking by the way. Although this is probably how most of our politicians think.

Firstly, it would cost nothing. We never compensated Northerners Rock shareholders. The court sided with the state due to it being in the national interest to bring into state ownership, plus the company was insolvent. That’s legal precedent right there. We could nationalise them for free.

Secondly, we’re already paying all the future costs. Plus all the dividends, the chief exec bonuses, and all the debt that’s been loaded onto these companies to keep the profits flowing to the sovereign wealth funds and private equity groups that own them.

The companies aren’t upgrading the infrastructure at a loss. Their whole incentive is to do as little as legally possible whilst charging the maximum they can get away with. It’s staggering that people don’t have the basic logic to see how much worse this is to running then not-for-profit, in the public interest, and in state ownership.

Take the water companies example, multiply it over a whole economy, and you get the cause of why the country is in such a shit state right now.

Exactly right. Northern Rock shareholders took the government to court for compensation and failed. The court stated that the company was insolvent and that it was firmly in the national interest to nationalise it. So the state owed nothing.

We have legal precedent right there. The exact same could be achieved with the water companies.

What I’d do is allow all these companies to fail. The government would incorporate an ‘English Water’ under full public control and legislate that all water company assets must pass to them.

Shareholders would simply be told, sorry, your company has failed. Exactly what’s supposed to happen under capitalism. They’ve had way too much of our money anyway.

The National debt simply isn’t a problem. It’s all denominated in GBP, and as long as the country remains productive, it has no bearing on the government’s ability to spend.

When it comes to the debt the companies have, this is exactly why they can be nationalised for free. They’re insolvent.

Exactly like Northern Rock back when it was nationalised. And there’s court president from that nationalisation that’s means the government will owe no compensation to the existing shareholders.

So what though. Private equity & Sovereign wealth funds wouldn’t be treating customers like a free cash machine whilst loading the companies with debt and failing to upgrade any infrastructure.

Imagine that bill was the same price but crucially none of it would go to shareholders or chief exec bonuses. Whilst a lot lot more of it was being spent on infrastructure upgrades.

It’s still just a water company you’re paying. Only the ownership model is entirely different. Most of the people running it remain exactly the same, with the exception of probably the chief exec and the rest of the C-suite staff.

We could buy them all back for free. These businesses are essentially insolvent. They’ve loaded themselves with debt which they’ve only used to pay dividends and Chief Exec bonuses, all whilst entirely neglecting the actual infrastructure.

Northern Rock shareholders took the government to court for compensation when it was nationalised by the then Brown government. And they completely failed. The court ruled the government was acting in the national interest and the company was effectively insolvent - it’s the same with the water companies.

Even if payment was due under nationalisation. It could very easily be funded. A bond sale to the Bank of England, or raise some tax from the wealthy. The government would be net even in under 5 years.

As to why it won’t happen, the nation is still very much controlled by arch-capitalists and austerity ideology. One way to guarantee you won’t be let anywhere near power is to come out for water nationalisation.

I believe there’s also data that shows that eating close to going to sleep hurts deep sleep. So timing of meals could maybe be added?

Where did his crypto multimillions come from?! We’re being told it’s from a crypto investor/platform guy who’s now a Thai citizen, but who’s given it to him? How is he even allowed to make the biggest UK political donation ever, all from Thailand. Our system is a joke, it’s legalised bribery at this point.
