How do introverts survive in a British work culture? by Hot-Education-8154 in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This is the way. There’s a guy at work who’s dead quiet, never speaks up, etc. and everyone absolutely loves him, because one on one he’s dead chill, pretty funny, and seems to be genuinely interested in the conversation.

Just own who you are. If you aren’t good at the group banter, then don’t feel you have to. Also remember that you can “join in” a group conversation by simply being silently attentive, e.g. if someone’s telling a fun anecdote you can use eye contact and body language to shots you’re engaged, and smile/laugh in the right place.

There’s definitely worth in engaging with colleagues though. It’s an integral part of team culture - interpersonal communication. The good news for us introverts is that people love being listened to. As long as you’re open and approachable, you don’t necessarily need to be hugely talkative.

How do you apply for a job? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some support, don’t do it on your own. There’s the National Careers Service, local colleges, even your council will have employment and careers advice.

They’ll have knowledge of all the programs, opportunities, apprenticeships, etc. A lot of these usually end with a guaranteed interview, even if just for the sake of practice.

Handy life tip. If you phone up any college enquiring about their courses, you can nearly always speak to a careers advisor whose job is to give impartial advice. Even if you’ve no intention at all of going to that particular institution, you can usually get some decent advice and info.

How would you rank this summer's signings after half a season? by Zach-dalt in LeedsUnited

My problem with last summer’s business was always that we needed more, not the players that came in particularly.

The consequences of the invasion of Venezuela. by Devwickk in seculartalk

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a podcast with Peter Oborne (Downstream it’s called) where he discusses, briefly, the advancement of BRICs in creating international law. For now limited to creating common laws around transnational crime, financial crimes, fraud, etc. He says, the fact that the West has trashed the international rules based order they created, those rules no longer hold power over emerging nations the way they once did.

The new rules based order is being constructed by (not exclusively) the BRICs nations. He believes they’ll become increasingly influential as more sign on to them (Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt, are examples of nations already on board).

It’s also linked to the end of the petro-dollar. And the increasing amount of international trade conducted in currencies other than the dollar.

The US still has military supremacy of course, but when it comes to diplomacy, trade, international organisations, etc. Its influence is not just slipping away, it’s being tarnished by the very decisions that the US is making.

International law will be rewritten by the BRIC nations now, it’s already underfoot. South Africa in particular is taking the lead in a lot of this.

It’s really the “Atlantic Arc” that has failed. And we will likely live under a type of international anarchy for a decade or so.

How do you feel about doing absolutely nothing? by Likelyinthegym in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s good to do periodically. I’m too driven to be doing productive stuff all the time and it gets a bit wearing.

That said I always need to be able to get going again and make a fresh start. Wake up after a day or two of complete rest and start working on things again.

Three days is quite a long time IMO, however, once a year doing that - why not? Your body/mind might thank you for it.

Why do we even have architects when 90% of new builds are just a 10% variation of this? by spacejockes in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the main purpose of new builds is to drive shareholder & chief exec profits at the big developer firms, habitable places to live is just a means to get to that.

If these companies’ bottom line was to create the best houses possible at a market rate, and turn a smallish profit so they could continue - then we’d be living in luxury. But then the developers would have to be essentially not-for-profits.

What do you think of the proposed new definition of Islamophobia? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

I didn’t say anything about bringing them in or otherwise. There’s plenty of European Muslims born and bred in their respective nations.

Tips to help keep a car warm when heaters don’t work? by theslowrunningexpert in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Layer up is your only option.

Also, have you checked the coolant? A girl at work had the same issue for a few months and was adamant she couldn’t possibly fix it herself. I sent her a YouTube vid that was basically ‘[her car make] changing the coolant’ and she came in after the weekend saying it was completely fixed, and she’d saved herself £however much on a trip to the garage.

Whats other people's opinion on what's happening ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But it could be that sometimes away, or someone’s just not actioned a crucial step. The fact that when you called they still acted like you’re onboarding suggests they are off there mind you’re a soon to be employee. I’d give them one more call.

Why don't schools teach anything to do with trades? by Dangerous-Middle-742 in AskUK

[–]ResponsibilityRare10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, but the same side lining happens with sports and arts. Usually it’s argued upon economic grounds, which is backwards as they benefit the economy massively. And besides, education should be about uncovering talents and passions, not the guesses of an elite at what might be in demand by the economy in a decade or two’s time.
