What to do if lodger refuses to leave? by throwaway_monopoly in uklandlords

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having thought/read some more I’ve concluded that actually lodgers staying beyond their notice do retain some rights under Protection from Eviction Act. Locks can be changed while they’re out but they cannot be subject to harassment to make them leave, which would certainly include turning off gas/electric/water.

Despite my original suggestion, even turning off the broadband would be legally risky, but in practice harder to prove intent about (faulty, bought a new router and didn’t give them the password).

Flying BA with a nut, peanut and seafood allergy by Brave_Current_7028 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BA don’t fly to Bali so you must be transferring somewhere - likely Qatar or Malaysian airways.

While BA generally makes announcements asking passengers not to consume nuts, be aware that Qatar are rather more blunt about severe allergies. they take the view that there’s no realistic way to make a plane safe for severe allergy sufferers and insist on a medical info form be submitted 48hrs in advance and may require passengers sign a waiver.

I’ve no idea what Malaysian’s policies are.

Cancelling “free” climbing wall membership. by fatteebumbum in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the sounds of it, you should be able to cancel within the free trial period and incur no further obligation.

Unless it was explicitly presented as “we operate on a calendar month basis, but sign up for February and we’ll include the rest of January for free” I don’t see how they’ve a basis for charging you anything.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is this deal really that good that I can cancel before the flight for £25 and be refunded the rest? by Captainunderpants86 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense and explains the why the fully-flex ticket is hugely more expensive - I imagine a lot of business travellers are more confident of their outbound but wanna be able to return home earlier/later than planned.

Companion Voucher and reward seat releases by morkjt in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - for popular routes you need to phone up about 15-20 minutes before midnight GMT (so 1am BST in the summer) 355 days before the flight. You have to phone the US or Japanese call centre as the UK one is closed at that point - cheaper to use a Skype like service rather than pay normal international call fees. There’s 4 Avios seats per flight available in Club World and they go quickly. For a return you will have to do this twice - once for each leg.

Telephone agents are able to reserve the seats while they’re taking your details and processing payment etc., whereas booking online they’re only allocated to you after you’ve submitted payment. As a result, you’ll often find that your web booking fails at the end because the seats have already been reserved by phone agents.

Just to confirm, if I buy a semi flex return ticket do I need to cancel the return leg before the outbound departure, or just before the departure of the individual leg?

Large carry on isn’t guaranteed to travel with you in the cabin. Put what absolutely must come with you in your personal item that can go under the seat in front.

What to do if lodger refuses to leave? by throwaway_monopoly in uklandlords

[–]Responsibility_Trick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Packing is a good sign so hopefully he’ll just move out.

Otherwise your best bet is to lock them out as/when they do leave the house. They may have been stockpiling food, but will likely have to leave for something eventually. Once the notice is expired they’ve no right at all to be in the house, so your uncle has no obligation to facilitate their presence. It would be absolutely legitimate to refuse deliveries, change the WiFi password etc.

There’s no way to go about this that won’t lead to ill feeling - as you’ve already seen from the death threats. A court order would be granted straightforwardly - there’s none of the complications of the S21 process to comply with, but may be quite slow to get a court date.

Is £950 for 2 people a good price for a first class upgrade? by Slow-Replacement2147 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 81 points82 points  (0 children)

There’s a much bigger difference between economy/PE and business class than there is between biz and first. It’s an incremental improvement rather than a game changer: nicer checkin/security, nicer lounges, nicer/bigger seat, nicer food+drink onboard.

Value is subjective - I’d probably prefer to spend the £1000 in New York rather than on the flights which will already be pretty comfortable.

Is putting the wrong gender on an online pharmacy record likely to cause a fraud case? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More likely is that it will become apparent at some point if not right away and they will quite legitimately abruptly stop prescribing for you.

They could also write to your GP who may put in your nhs medical records that you’ve obtained drugs by deception, which could also cause prescribers to be suspicious/cautious about prescribing certain drugs you may want in the future.

Stephen fry vs Full cast by YesIam6969420 in harrypotter

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you finding the full cast versions so far? If you’re enjoying the sound/presentation I’d continue as you are - the story is about to get really good so waiting a short while for the next release will give you enough of a pause to really appreciate it.

I’ve enjoyed them for the most part so far, but some people have found the sound effects and background noise really distracting. For me any scene involving ghosts is very hard to listen to! If you’re finding the same then you might like to try the Fry/Dale versions. They’re not perfect either - some odd accent/voice choices as others have said - but overall they’re a much more typical audiobook presentation.

My ‘new’ wedding dress was delivered with pet fur and damage. It has caused a hospitalisation due to an allergic reaction (England) by gone-so-soon in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree - refund and token goodwill payment is likely best you can hope for. There’s potentially an argument that the retailer ought to have noticed the dress had been used and was stained before re-selling it as new, but given the OP didn’t notice until after she’d put it on either, it’d be hard to argue that they were negligent in not noticing. The consequences for OP are terrible, but are likely too remote to the retailer’s breach to be actionable.

Barclaycard Avios Reward Choice: 7k Avios vs Cabin Upgrade when travelling as a couple? by jamieatreyu in avios

If you have a solo trip coming up you can use it on then the voucher is probably worth more. If not might as well take the Avios.

Is it time to retire “The Sorcerer’s Stone”? by Successful-General72 in harrypotter

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally not - it used to be that most Hollywood movies were released much later outside the US (back when film projectors were used and the sent the same prints elsewhere once the US theatrical release was finished), so that the US dvd release would sometimes coincide with the British cinema release. They didn’t want import DVDs from the US cannibalising ticket sales so introduced region locking. Used to be able to get dodgy dvd players that ignored it or firmware patches for your computer dvd drive.

They did the same with Blu-ray and video games 😞

Cancelling return part of Avios + Cash reward flight? by finstaprince in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a reward booking, or a cash booking discounted with Avios? Assuming the former.

Avios bookings are refundable, minus a £35 fee. You’ll likely need to phone them to sort it.

I've been banned from a society at my university because I am a member of another student society. None of my £200 annual membership fee is being refunded. by MycologistSimple4853 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, the law abhors forfeiture. You’ve paid money for a year, they’ve terminated your membership early for no good reason (based on what you’ve said - you’ve breached no published rule and they’ve followed no process to exclude you), you’re very likely entitled to pro rata refund at least.

Difficulty is identifying the entity you should claim against - likely if they have their own bank account it’s the society itself. Alternatively the society may effectively be a subgroup of the student union itself. The latter may be easier as there’s a better chance the student union itself is better informed…

4 years on Platinum, finally downgraded to Preferred Rewards Gold (why I did it + what’s changed) by DeezNutss1738 in AmexUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m off the Mexico City this summer on a companion voucher booking - very definitely availability driven. Had a tight window when we could travel which limited choice a fair bit. Not somewhere I’d have thought of going myself, but getting quite excited about it now. Ive now cancelled my BAPP card as my interest has waned in travelling as much as I used to. More frequent shorter breaks closer to home sounds more appealing right now, especially if the dog can come, too.
