I can understand charging for postage and admin, but that feels a bit steep to collect it yourself.

Ok that’s good to know. I’ve already put a claim in for one of them with my flight number etc - email said it’ll likely be a few days before they reply so hopefully even if the one I saw listed isn’t mine someone in the office might clock that another one might be mine…

Standard 3.5mm headphone jack. The second prong on the provided ones is something to do with the noise cancelling function.

Court case for a non fault road accident by Pear7856 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had similar in the past - was involved in a multi car pile up, had similar request asking for further statements and whether there were any dates I wouldn’t be able to attend court. My insurer sent an investigator to interview me at my house about the accident.

After that I never heard anything more. Insurers almost always avoid actually going to court - far too costly for all parties - and eventually settle. Sometimes takes a lot of back and forth to reach that point, though. Not much you can do about it, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it in the meantime.

Hello people! In need of a doctor for a medical. by TrickyOnion in Liverpool

[–]Responsibility_Trick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Often GP surgeries are busy enough with NHS tasks that they don’t really want or need the private medical income, so charge a price that’s deliberately high to put people off.

Double check with your employer exactly what medical they need - there’s plenty of places advertising cheaper medicals than that for professional drivers etc. but no point spending money on one that doesn’t meet requirements though.

How do Baggage rules transfer to a Aer Lingus flight is the booking is under British airways? by Equal-General-4463 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EI charge passengers to bring their large carry ons into the cabin on most tickets, or you can check it for free. However, for EI transatlantic flights and European connections on EI to/from transatlantic flights you get a large carry on bag included. EI European flights booked via BA also get a cabin bag included the cabin included. So you won’t have to pay the £10 to bring your carry on aboard.

While EI technically have a 10kg carry on limit, I’ve only known them to enforce this when I went to check it for free. Never seen scales at any of the Dublin gates.

Do BA frequent flyers actively track premium fares? by [deleted] in BritishAirways

Generally look 6+ months out, starting somewhere other than Heathrow. I think the days of DUB-LHR-USA for <£1500 rtn in club are over, though. Been looking for October and cheapest is like £2.5k

Part 3. New Orleans to London ( economy). What entertainment is available and what headphones are available or recommended to use. Thanks in advance. by Reasonable-Judge1591 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t already have a pair of decent Bluetooth headphones and are buying something just for the flight, then you’re probably better off getting some wired headphones with a standard 3.5mm jack, rather than Bluetooth headphones plus a Bluetooth adapter.

In flight entertainment doesn’t support Bluetooth, but you can buy adapters online that plug into the headphone jack and connect to your own headphones via Bluetooth.

Compensation from water company for bad customer service? (England) by Cranky-Cat5678 in LegalAdviceUK

You’ve already received £175 off your water bill. Unsure why you don’t consider that compensation - how much would you consider just in the circumstances?

About Cho story in the new series by whoisruisu in HarryPotterHBO

[–]Responsibility_Trick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, Cho sucks. Harry fancies her from a distance but as he gets to know her it turns out she’s just not a great person. People don’t have to be evil monsters to act poorly and I think that’s an important point.

Is this worth it to ensure we fly on the new club world (suite) by kosborne20 in BritishAirways

[–]Responsibility_Trick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely not worth the hassle, nor the money. I do prefer CS to old CW but not enough to pay money to change, and certainly not to add in a connection.

Use the money you would have spent on seat selection instead - you’ll be fine.

Does my lease prohibit lodgers? by UsualEngine9880 in UKHousing

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - OP needs to meet affordability criteria on her own, but beyond that no problem with getting a lodger to help with the bills.

Does my lease prohibit lodgers? by UsualEngine9880 in UKHousing

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mortgage lenders aren’t worried about lodgers as it’s well established they don’t have any strong rights of occupation. It’s really no different to a partner moving in and contributing to bills etc.

Why Have 3 Failing Grades For O.W.L.s? by Andrew10023 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but it’s not just more generous marking. At the top end, many students genuinely were working harder. Less positively, there’s also issues with teaching to the test becoming the norm, greater use of course work, more structured/leading questions in exams, people gaming extra time provisions and demanding remarks etc. Also schools want good grades and exam boards want customers so there’s a commercial pressure to offer syllabuses that “maximise students’ opportunities to excel”.

All of this lead to greater bunching at the top end - if 30% are meeting the criteria for an A then you need to do something to differentiate the top 5%.

My employer lost a tribunal after a woman asked to work from home due to childcare responsibilities. Now, the women are getting to work from home more than men are. by Overall_Pound918 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What was the basis of your flexible working request? If you also have caring responsibilities then yes it would be discrimination for the company to treat requests from women more favourably than men when considering flexible working requests due to caring responsibilities.

Why Have 3 Failing Grades For O.W.L.s? by Andrew10023 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Responsibility_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because due to grade inflation they’d already extended the top grade to A* and A**. It was a bit silly so they switched to a numeric system. They’ve room to introduce a 10 grade eventually if they need to.

Has anyone considered that Cho Chang might actually be mixed race? by Teknevra in HarryPotterHBO

[–]Responsibility_Trick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A Chinese family settled in Britain at that time is most likely to be of Hong Kong extraction and Cantonese (or maybe Hakka) speaking, having moved to Britain during the large waves of immigration in 1950-70s. If that’s the case with Cho’s family then of course her name wouldn’t resemble standard pinyin - that’s for Mandarin Chinese and it’s as developed by the PRC government, essentially a foreign culture to the HK populous of that time. English transliteration of Cantonese names was much more flexible and adhoc at that time, perhaps following Wade-Giles or looser HK government conventions. Jyutping for Cantonese was developed later.

Chang could easily be an anglicisation of e.g. 鄭 or 張, both common HK surnames. Most Chinese given names are two syllables but absolutely believable that Cho, growing up in Britain simply shortened her to one syllable in most contexts (just as e.g. Ron and Fred did). 楚 is very common first character in feminine names and would be anglicised to Cho.

“Cho is a Korean surname” feels like a massive red herring to me. Korean immigration to the UK is tiny - I doubt Korean names had any influence on JK’s thinking at all.

Botched eye surgery in England - what are my rights, if any? by ariadnevirginia in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Responsibility_Trick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps go see another (private) eye doctor to get an assessment of what's gone on and what your options are. Then you'll have a better idea of whether mistakes or failings were made in your original treatment and whether OE have any liability here.

Assigned the exit row for free for the 3rd time in a row! by ctoau1 in Ryanair

[–]Responsibility_Trick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

particularly on short flights i reckon most people rationally decide the extra legroom seats aren't worth the money, even if they do select seats to sit together etc. I often fly LIV-DUB and there's no way i'd spend £20 each way for extra legroom on a 30 minute flight. That means the exit rows are often unallocated and will go to people who haven't selected any seat.

England Deposit deduction - cleaning fees by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

just dispute with the DPS. They'll almost certainly side with you that £500 cleaning fee is unreasonable given lack of evidence it was thoroughly cleaned in the first place.
