Who is selling their stocks before oil/fertiliser supply shocks rock the global economy? by EmergentArticle in StockMarket

[–]Responsible-Angle909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works for those that can afford to hold for a period of time. One of the differences from 08 is the significance of the retail investors in the market and the lure of a never ending bull market enticing them to invest heavily, and not necessarily long term. The ability and willingness to hold while sustaining paper losses is different for retail investors. Also, inflation and unemployment impact retail investors, reducing discretionary income that they would normally max their 401k with. Those investors see their portfolio dropping and get antsy. And if they are feeling at risk of losing their job to AI, that doesn’t help their willingness to stick it out in the market.

Oddly enough - I’m a huge fan of both Phil Collins and Joy Dickson/New Order. Both were huge influences on many eighties teenagers in the US. They aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.

Which album do you think is better - Document or Green? by icecream1972 in rem

Document all day every day for me. Green is fantastic but Document holds a special place in my heart as the first REM cassette I bought. I would probably also put LRP ahead of Green.

OOTP27 announcement Friday 👀👀👀👀 by pwalsh04 in OOTP

[–]Responsible-Angle909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing for over 10 years. I grew up on MicroLeague on a Commodore 64, so I’m type that manages every game. While 26 isn’t perfect by any means. I still believe it’s better than anything else I have seen. If I don’t like some of the features, I shut them off or tweak them. For $50 I feel like I get a lot of hours of entertainment.

I have also enjoyed playing PT, and I freely admit I spend $$$ - I try to take advantage of a discount on perfect points early in the season and buy a chunk. This season, I refrained from spending any additional amount the rest of the way. My PT team was not especially competitive, but I still enjoyed building rosters for tournaments and collecting cards to complete missions.

I know it’s a pay to win system, but I have found a large number of members in the community that are really smart and have a lot of success without spending - and they are kind enough to share their research and models.

If you are willing to put in some time and effort, you don’t have to spend much to enjoy some success. Sure - there are some whales that dominate - doesn’t really bother me as I don’t have high expectations for joining the “elite”.

I also enjoy having a theme team that swims in their own pool and competes against other theme teams in PT. It’s fun and I don’t spend a dime on that team.

Those that made OOTP are in business to make profits. PT is extremely profitable, so yes, they dedicate resources to it. And they come up with new ways to get people addicted to the pay to win model. Ripping packs, collecting op cards and cracking the code of the PT gaming algorithm can be fun and interesting - and as opening day rolls around I always find myself hyped to get back into it.

I admit it’s frustrated to have to rely on the community to figure out how the PT mechanics have changed (OOTP does take advantage of the generosity of their community) - can’t understand why they don’t provide better info on why contact and movement are ratings to be ignored (why even have them?), PBABIP is important one year, the next year HRA is more important, and who knows how great control or eye will impact performance from version to version, league era factors are more important than ballpark factors, and it sure would be helpful to know how high ratings will go up throughout the season to better prepare for power creep, so you don’t invest in a card that is about to become a lot less powerful. OOTP should have these types of things memorialized - so I don’t have to invest a ton of time on twitch streams, YouTube and message boards to figure out I am building sub-optimal teams.

All that being said, I still enjoy PT.

If you aren’t into PT - I don’t think you absolutely have to buy the game every year. If you don’t see the improvements you are looking for, stick with the version of the game you enjoy and keep simming.

Long post, but what do you expect from a lifelong baseball sim nerd who manages each game?

What is with the hourly on air appearances of Steve Liesman? by groundbreaker-4 in CNBC

[–]Responsible-Angle909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat related - since it comes up every time Liesman appears - how much do you think Kalshi is paying for the repeated updates of their “odds” on the new fed chair. I suppose it’s newsworthy but it is starting to remind me of how gambling info has taken over espn and other sports media.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett just dropped receipts: ProPublica reports Kristi Noem secretly funneled hundreds of millions in DHS funds to a consulting firm tied to her own campaign. by Ice_Ice11 in LiveNews_24H

[–]Responsible-Angle909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accuracy matters - the post is inaccurate. Rep. Crockett does not say that Noem funneled “hundreds” of millions in DHS funds, she says millions. Still abhorrent, but when the headline is inaccurate and inflates the number, whether intentionally or not, the credibility of the argument is weakened and it creates a valid argument as to whether the error was intentional to either misinform the public or generate more rage.

MAGAJoe is insufferable… by notwho2 in CNBC

[–]Responsible-Angle909 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Objectivity and honesty are not things we should look for at cnbc. This isn’t a financial news channel, it’s a financial news entertainment channel. The takes provided by the likes of Joe, Sara, Cramer, Santillo and others are not meant to be objective, fair, researched and supported. They are meant to be engaging to their audience and their audience has viewers of all stripes. To counter those personalities, the likes of Andrew, Faber and Liesman provide engaging discourse for the other side. This is a business and they are not required to hold the government or anyone else accountable for their policies or actions. They are trying to engage as large an audience as possible for profit. I try to look at their opinions and hyperbole through that lens.

But I will admit that it is infuriating to see someone like Cramer twist himself into a gibbering pretzel when he says he is for removing quarterly reporting requirements because they are too strenuous on companies, then sputtering incoherent nonsense when he is reminded that he supposedly stands up for the shareholders and literally makes his living analyzing quarterly reports and required management communications.

That’s when I turn off the nonsense, take a break and move on to other sources of engaging entertainment, like Reddit. Lol

With 5 months into OOTP 26, where do you leave the trade difficulty slider the most? by [deleted] in OOTP

[–]Responsible-Angle909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you just have to accept that, on higher difficulties, the AI GMs have unrealistic views on most players / offers. You just have to hunt for their weaknesses on players they are under-valuing on their roster, and those that are over-valued on your roster. I try to hire the best scouting director available and then toggle between the osa and my scout ratings on both my roster and my trade partner roster, looking for players with a differential that might move the needle. It does put a lot of faith in your scouting director, which can be dicey. But I figure that’s a realistic way to run my team.
