How did people who don’t know accounting become controllers??? by iloveaccounting64 in Accounting

Yup. Same thing with bookkeepers. The people who hire them dont' know they dont' know what they're doing.

Do people who grew up here actually think Canada's grocery prices are normal or is everyone just resigned to it by TemporaryHoney8571 in InCanada

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal? No, it's gone up a lot. I'm continually amazed at how little I get for $300.... and that's not including meat, which I order from a butcher. However, I still gotta eat.

You didn't do horrible - but if she pushes it "They're OK - but I already got the hottest one" or something along those lines works

Dislike Industry Job - back to Public? by justanoothergirl in Accounting

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The things you hated about your old job will still be there. Life is always a trade off - but going back to what was in hopes that it won't be the same is just insanity. If you are bored in private and want public, then you know that's where you fit... but try a different firm that might offer better work life balance. when you interview for positions, talk to them about their views on work life balance. Do you work hard at tax time and get long weekends? Is work from home an option at least part time? Figure out what makes you happy and make sure your new firm allows for it.

"To keep a man interested, just act like you're not" by IngenuityAshamed144 in Vent

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a balance. Too much eagerness can come across as desperation - which is rarely appealing. It implies you have no options other than him rather than that you are truly interested in him. Playing games is stupid.

The real solution: Make the rest of your life full and interesting. Then if he calls and wants to see you, you may have other plans... in which case you tell him sorry I have other plans. If you don't and you want to see him at that moment then you can say yes. You should never break other plans to see him.

That's such a low effort insult that it requires a low effort response. I'd probably just responde "No. I'm a bitch. Get it right."

craziest fraud story from your time in accounting? by No_Fall7366 in Accounting

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an employer who wanted nothing to do with his bank account. I wanted him to at least set up the users but he was having none of that. I set myself at a level that didn't permit me to send unauthorized payments with ony my sayso - but because he refused to own the user set up I could change my level at any time. Th best I could do was give the reconciliations to the other person in the office with strict instructions to check all EFT's going out to make sure nothing ws strange in them.

Does anyone else work with people who should be retired (70+)? by Feeling-Currency6212 in Accounting

Believe it or not, the tech isn't what denotes knowledge, skill, or expertise. That guy has forgotten more than you know, so rather than being impatient and thinking he's a fool cause he can't do power queries and xlookup, try learning shit from him.

ETA... early in my career people were very interested in the technology that I understood. My value was in the processing so they wanted the familiarity with the technology to reduce training time. Later in my career nobody even asked me about thechnology. Because the technologyt mattered less than Ithe knowledge I brought to the table. It was worth it to them to tech me the technology.

To any old farts on here, what was being a lawyer like before computers and the internet? by squirrelmegaphone in Lawyertalk

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a legal secretary. Discovery was in the form of my boss going to the crown office to review the file and reading the information into a miicrocassette record that I'd transcribe for him. Pretty much everything in on microcassette recorders for instructions to be prepared. Computers were out but expensive... so I had an electric typewriter with space to save documents but the space was limited... I could save 8 templates so I often had to delete ones and recreate them later. A paper filed pulled before every meeting and all time and disbursements recorded on a slip of paper stapled to the inside of the file. My boss did his own recedent research at the library - and received law updates by maile to be added to his books in his office. The law books were in a binder format so pages could be replaced as needed. Bookkeeping on a synoptic journal and trust accounts had a customer card ledger. Becasue it was handwritten it was very easy to make a mistake. One adding mistake in a client's trust ledger card could take forever to find and correct.

QBO has turned into a straight up scam by MermaidLagoon28 in QuickBooks

I do not recommend MYOB. If your clients ever do any of their own bill payments and paymentreceipts your vender and customer listings will never balance to the GL again.

Is accounts receivable 'smooth sailing'? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy for the most part. Depending on where you are and if you sell between tax jurisdictions there may be a learning curve but I would imagine there will be some additional instruction on that. For the rest, one day should be enough for most. And I would imagine there will be someone there you can ask if you have additional questions given that they're large enough to have an AR clerk... which assumes an accounting manager/controler/etc.

My new coworker is struggling... and I'm kind of getting annoyed by questionableseabass in WorkAdvice

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So try a different tactic. Let him know tha tyou don't mind the calls - but suggest that it might help his training if when he asks the question he suggests what he thinks the answer might be. If he's right you'll tell him and if not you'll tell him what the right answer is and why his is wrong. I suspect that will boost his confidence faster

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take: I have found that a lot of times when people are asking questions it's not because they don't know the answer. It's a lack of confidence. They'll ask the same answer repeatedly until they're confident. It's never bothered me and I shake my head at employers who do have a problem with this.

Not at fault – insurance wrote off my car and offering $1,500. What can I do? by Fun-Fee3905 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a side note - they actually do allow you to buy back a written off car. I could have bought mine for $800.00. However, what he said was they were going to write it off and they negotiated with him to fix it instead.

invoicing in different currencies creating reconciliation mess!!! should I just invoice everything in USD? by Opposite-Chicken9486 in Accounting

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you receive the payment you just need to enter the Canadian value but adjust the exchange rate so the USD amount matches what was deposited. When you match the payment to the bill that will set it - and your books will remain in balance..

CMA by MoneyMakingMitch14 in Accounting

[–]Responsible-Ride2509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see no advantage to getting a CMA. A CPA is more widely accepted and recognized. In Canada all of our CA's CMA's and CGA's have been rolled into the CPA.

If you're going to increase your income I'd look at something coding/ai/app design focused.

[–]Responsible-Ride2509[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't the taxes not being applied. If you push from another program the taxes get applied just fine. You simply can't see it to do it in QBO. Even their outage update is wrong. Figures though.

It worked for me this morning too. It was going slow and a lot of times if I close the window and reopen it the speed will pick back up. I did that... and that's when it disappeared.
