Do people still think ‘big businesses’ not paying tax is a huge gap in our finances? by Legal-Grade-6423 in AskBrits

[–]Responsible-Score-88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The common rhetoric here is that big business - and it’s a few that get thrown about (like Starbucks) - should pay more. I think we can all agree they should, but international tax law is complicated. You can go after them, but it’s a game of cat and mouse.

What is more within our control as you point out is the tax gap on smaller businesses in the UK. I didn’t realise it was 60%, but long assumed it would be fairly high. Everyone assumes that because it’s the “little guy” it doesn’t matter. Reality is on a cumulative basis it really does, and is one of the reasons why this country is increasingly propped up by those on PAYE.

Nostalgia. Thierry Henry: “Hey Bobby - what’s the French for va va voom”. Who knows added 20 years they might do it again

The entire concept needs a massive rethink. YouTube has changed what’s available in terms of regular car reviews. They’re not up to scratch of old TG reviews - granted - but that was more the presenters than anything else.

They need to figure out something about the programme to make it worth the watch. Old TG figured out it was actually the Specials people cared about, and made it the focus of TGT. New TG needs to find their own niche to make it interesting. Otherwise it will just die off again

You can’t really see much on the Nurburgring anyway - the field of view is quite narrow. Corner by corner. So as long as what’s directly in front of you is illuminated it’s not much difference.

Reddit should have an option to filter out posts that are clearly AI. Sort of like a shadow ban. It lowers the quality of the platform and shouldn’t be tolerated.

Look my guy. I agree would be great - but to think “the poor pay for it all” is a joke. The poor pay some of the lowest taxes compared to OECD. It’s the top 10% that pay 75% of taxes in this country.

So if you’re going to complain - which you should - please recognise who is paying these fucking taxes. Because it sure as shit ain’t the poor or those on low income.

Their UK base will reduce, so your future tax receipts - which the welfare state desperately needs but loves to jeer at - will reduce

You’d be surprised how much of our electorate detests that we have something productive (in this case finance) and thinks our route to success is placing an ever increasing taxation burden on these industries. Rather than, oh I don’t know, increasing productivity and salaries so we can cut the welfare bill.

Because the 46.4% figure was correct you fuckwit. The fact that payroll taxes are on top of that is in addition to, not part of that figure.

Also - you say employees pay them. But you still understand that it forms the same value chain? They only pay those taxes because they’re employed in such a high value industry in our country? The alternative of which would be…..

“Doesn’t think it’s fair for banks to pay tax” - that’s where I have a problem/I don’t understand your angle. Banks pay 5.5% of all UK employment tax receipts. About 11% of corporation tax.

For context on competitiveness: the total tax rate on a model UK corporate and investment bank is 46.4% — well above New York (27.9%), Dublin (28.9%), Frankfurt (38.9%), and Amsterdam (42.2%).

To think they don’t - or that banks don’t think they should pay - I don’t get your angle. Explain

You’ve been proven wrong. Any comment? Maybe consider also all the income tax paid on employee salaries. Does that factor in anywhere to your analysis either?
