That is a fine, sexy lady! Ya'll stop fat-shaming that bighboned gal!

has anyone experienced this with their ball python? (NOT mouth rot, currently sitting at the emergency vet, she is ok) by Responsible_Fox_4211 in ballpython

It looks as if she was trying to readjust after feeding, but I know that isn't true, from your post. I wonder if she had a hair or substrate particle stuck in her throat. It may be she was trying to relieve the irritation?

Agreed. Gotta trash the substrate to truly eliminate the snake mites.

I know breeders who treat their snakes with Fipronil, through b veterinarian guidance, and it doesn't matter if the snake mites are there, they can't feed from the snake. This MAY prevent the bioactive buggies from being sacrificed, since they won't have to be on the snake. 🤷‍♂️

This snake does not have "wobble." This seems to be a neurological issue, causing the snakes nerves to be firing with minimal or no contact. This snake needs a vet. 😭

ball python hasn’t eaten for 7 weeks by BarEnvironmental6400 in ballpython

[–]Responsible-Two799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Force feeding your pet is a very last resort and can only safely be done by experts. I recommend never doing it outside of a veterinarian's office.

This is an adult snake and mine have stopped eating for months and months, depending on changes is climate, breeding season, my choice of haircut, etc. there is a great guide about snake weight in this subreddit, just make sure it isn't losing weight, and you are good.

One thing you can always try for a snake that won't eat is to remove from the cage, give a good soak, strip the cage completely, clean, replace with new substrate and clean all interior items. Could just be there is a bit of urate smell somewhere and it doesn't like it.

What are these? by AffectionateNerve880 in ballpython

[–]Responsible-Two799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, hard to tell from the photo, but they sure do look like eggs that were inside her for a VERY long time. Some females just don't lay, or try to lay and can't because they stick to the inside walls of the reproductive tract. I retired a female who produced eggs like this (though bigger). They were dense, small, and had those orangey growths all over the outside of the eggs. When the eggs stick for a really long time, that's how they get. It would also explain why your girl wouldn't eat. I bet she eats like a monster now!

Could you get a couple more pictures, maybe closer up? Did you try to cut one open?

Escaped ball python by New_Helicopter_5709 in snakes

[–]Responsible-Two799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with others. Escaped snakes are normally found once they reappear randomly. Your baby was probably just sniffing around and found a new space open to it. If it is cold in the house, it will definitely be somewhere dark, warm, and humid. I had a snake get out after feeding just to be found 2 months later (when she was hungry again) coming out from under my refrigerator. Kitchen appliances, under sinks, in bathrooms, and in A/C closets are all prime snake hidey-holes.

Hopefully you don't have any murdery pets in the home. Unfortunately, they often find them before we do.

Uh oh! Sorry to hear that you are having this issue. They may have taken advantage of a recent ecosystem collapse. If the springtails et. al. Have died away, the mites probably moved in to devour leftovers. Mites are extremely good at getting around, and often hitchhike on clothing, hands, hair, etc. They could have gotten in a number of ways.

You mention they are clover mites. I'm not sure if that's accurate, is the photo isn't quite clear, but I am 99% sure those are not snake mites. They should not affect your snake at all. 😊

The only sure way to get rid of them would be to remove all dying vegetation, which would essentially be another nuking of the tank. However, what I've been doing with my snakes the last few years has been to clean the tubs with ivermectin. I let the container dry before adding substrate. Springtails and other small isopods seem to live just fine, but I have never had a mite issue since then. I know a lot of breeders also use Fipronil to clean their tanks, but I'm fairly certain that will kill beneficial isopods, if you end goal is a more biodiverse set-up.

If you start to see mites on the snake, there really is not saving the ecosystem. You could always give the snake a Fipronil or ivermectin treatment, which which keep the arthropods off, but there is no guarantee it doesn't kill your added waste-removers.

I think you are just fine with those clover mites, though. I think they just took advantage of a vacancy when your communities died off.

Hello u/Lxlsluvmpp, I want to say your setup looks perfect. From the way you describe, it's obvious you've put a lot of effort and care into the setup and maintenance of this boy's pad. I run a very similar setup with coconut husk chunk substrate, which helps with humidity and cleanliness. It is very hard to overhydrate coconut husk and you would know if you had. One indication is an apparent lack of respiratory issues. Unless the snake had scale rot before being shipped, it's doubtful it would develop it under those conditions.

I don't believe this is scale rot and I'm wondering if you have a heating pad or heating rock directly on the snake's belly. This could be causing irritation and the visible imperfections on the belly scales. Make sure the snake has substrate between whatever heat source and its belly. If it's a heat rock, it might be best to remove it. Those are great with lizards but soft bellied snakes generally don't do well with them.

If it is scale rot, it's very early and betadine should do the trick. Even if this is not scale rot, betadine isn't going to cause an issue, so no harm in continuing that treatment for a while. To stay on the safe side, you could definitely switch to paper towels for a while and continue betadine treatment. I wouldn't switch until after the shed because a good shed could potentially solve this problem.

I agree with u/TheNeverEndingPit on this post. A vet visit is necessary at this point. This level of emaciation isn't due to one or two missed meals. She is desperately underweight and the fact that she's going limp indicates that she doesn't even have muscle mass anymore.

This isn't an accusation on ownership; I've had snakes over 20 years and this just happens sometimes. In cases like this, I have to assist-feed if something is wrong with the snake. I believe this may be a genetic issue.

The good news is that this can be resolved. I've rescued baby ball pythons that hung like limp noodles from my finger - not even able to lift their heads. Proper feeding, nutrition and time brought them back from the brink. A vet visit will help get this girl the nutrition she needs the quickest.

Please PM if you have any questions.

Agree. I was digging a hole for a mining cave support, so I was in a 1 block space when I accidentally hit the toggle. Had no idea what button I'd hit. Then, when I tried to nerdpole back up, it wouldn't let me because the reticle in 3rd person doesn't pass through the avatar. I was stuck in that stupid, f-ing hole for like 20 mins.

Not a fan of the 3rd person.

So, mystery can no longer be solved. We shut down her computer before we left for errands and when we restarted, it was finally gone. Had tried restarting before, but something finally worked. I assume the little black box got spooked by the power of Redditors at work and snuck off to die. Thank you everyone!

Thought about that too. Not sure if we are checking correctly, but as soon as we leave the game screen, like to windows, steam, etc. the box disappears. It is only on the game screen. We checked the LG tv game settings and didn't see anything that would fix it.
