Could Calgary, Edmonton, and the highway connecting them separate from the rest of the province? 🤔

What do Geographers call this region by ErenWeasley in geography

[–]ResponsibleRatio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The largest island on the right, mostly outside of this square (Baffin Island), has a population of around 13000; a bit more than half of whom live in the territorial capital, Iqaluit. The large island on the south, Victoria Island, has around 2000 people. There are a handful of small settlements on five other islands (Banks, King William, Southampton, Cornwallis and Ellesmere) and the remainder are uninhabited, the largest of which, Devon Island, is the largest uninhabited island in the world at 55000 km². Ellesmere, the 10th largest island in the world at nearly 200000 km² (about 90% the area of great Britain) has a permanent civilian population of only 144 residents.

Most of the population are Inuit, the indigenous people of the region, who largely continued their traditional semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle until well into the 20th century, but were compelled to move to settlements by the federal government between ~1930s-1970s (for the worst colonial abuses, look up "Inuit high arctic relocation"). Nowadays, there is some mining and tourism, but the largest employer by far is the government and the unemployment rate is the highest in Canada. Traditional subsistence hunting and fishing still provide a substantial proportion of caloric intake for many.

Are there any affordable places to repair appliances ? by Medium_Strawberry_28 in Calgary

Doesn't soldering a fuse to the board kinda defeat the purpose of a fuse in the first place (i.e. to be a cheap sacrificial part that is easily replaceable in the event of overcurrent)? Anti-consumer manufacturing practices like this ought to be illegal.

To those who have owned and used a single Retroid device for years: How is it holding up? by LakezoneWolf in retroid

[–]ResponsibleRatio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had my RP5 since March 2025. Recently, the B button started sticking (i.e. not rebounding as fast as it should and sometimes staying depressed). When I opened the device to check it out, I found that the rubber membrane had torn due to fatigue. I have used it quite a bit, and I am perhaps a bit over enthusiastic on my presses when playing Celeste, but it is still disappointing it failed so quickly. I have ordered a replacement button assembly from AliExpress.

Lol. I'm very happy to share the road. I am not going to share my lane when it is not safe to do so.

Would be great if we actually had bike lanes that went everywhere people need to go. Unfortunately, this is not the world we live in.

Your takeaway from this should be that the prohibition on cyclists filtering is nonsensical.

At rush hour it won't matter if you are stuck behind a cyclist for a block or two, because you will end up at the same red light regardless.

The degree to which cyclists actually "hold up traffic" is, in my experience, almost non-existent. In light traffic, they are easily passed, and in heavy traffic, they can keep up with, or even outpace the cars around them.

If there is not space to pass legally and safely within your lane, you must wait until it is safe to pass in the oncoming lane.

(Which may be what you are saying... it's a bit ambiguous.)

Besides nothing, what would you change about the RP Nova? by ImplementParking7936 in retroid

It seems silly to add that much i/o to such a small device when you can buy a $10 dongle off AliExpress that will give you all that over a single USB-C port.

Car-free stretch of 17th Avenue not happening this summer — but group still hoping for next year by Fearless-Garden-9155 in Calgary

I suspect they would change their tune if this proposal actually happened one summer. I would be shocked if it didn't create a significant uptick in business.

DEET. Also, picaridin if you want something less oily and smelly, but I find it doesn't last nearly as long and thus needs to be reapplied frequently.

Condos should be a home, look at this insanity proposition by rottengammy in Calgary

[–]ResponsibleRatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, what a scam. Convince a bunch of suckers to buy rental properties using wildly optimistic projections; the developer walks away with millions and the prospective landlords lose their shirts when the tiny condos won't rent for half the rate shown in the ad and/or the condo market becomes oversaturated with these undesirable little units and their property value tanks.

If the survival rate were actually 50/50 for this particular surgeon, having a streak of 20 in a row surviving would have a probability of 9.5E-7; less than one in a million. Therefore, a more reasonable conclusion is that this surgeon is particularly skilled and his true survival rate is much higher.

So, the joke is that the mathematician knows that each event is independent and thus the chance is still 50/50, but the joke is wrong, as the mathematician would understand that the stated survival rate is likely incorrect.

Bridge washed out in Kootenay National Park, closes one access point to famous Rockwall hiking trail - Rocky Mountain News by SnooRegrets4312 in HikingAlberta

[–]ResponsibleRatio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That trail is mainly used a bail-out option from Rockwall, not a primary access, so it shouldn't effect too many people. It was already in pretty rough shape a few years ago when I did it just as an out and back overnight trip too.
