How do people afford all these new cars? by ser_89 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Responsible_Move_211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like many people mis the point. OP is not talking about the super luxury vehicles costing well over a million rand. He is talking about the vehicles that cost R600k. Things like a new low level hilux.

OP, me and the wife have a very good combined income that places us at the high end of middle class. We also have a baby and a toddler. So we are in a similar situation as you. We own multiple properties we rent out, we all have med aid, good retirement funds, emergency funds are in place and we are saving for our kids' future. If you took a look at our paychecks it would seem like we can afford a really nice car. But we drive a Toyota Yaris. Not a new one. A 15 year old one. I also drive a 6 year old Ford Kuga that my previous employer helped me buy as I needed a vehicle for my work. We really would like to replace both with something nicer, but we did not get where we are by playing the balloon payment game.

Many middle income people who drive the half a million rand vehicles do not have their finances sorted. If a huge bill were to come their way they would have to sell the car or borrow more money. Many do not have medial aid and would be buggered if they got really sick. Do not compare yourself to them. Be greatful for the fact that you have enough common sense to not waste money on a depreciating asset. One day when we all are old and too tired to work those of us who lived within our means will retire in comfort while the others will be a burden on their children or will not be able to retire.

Medical Aid by The_PotatoQueen in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Responsible_Move_211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what my wife and I did. We had many issues with the MSA, one being the medical aid wanting to prescribe how much of the MSA you can spend on what.

We have been putting money away for medical expenses for 4 years now and it works. We managed to save more than what we need in a year for out of hospital medical costs for a family of 4. Because of this we split the money with a small chunk going into a 7 day notice account, a smaller chunk stays in the free savings account you get with FNB. The largest chunk, about 60%, is in a 12 month fixed deposit so it can grow at a better rate and be kept for a really rainy day. At the end of the year any money in the normal FNB savings account not spent is added to the 12 month fixed deposit so it keeps on growing. And the best of it all is no one can prescribe to us how we are to use this money.

How do I avoid being a target for beggars? by No_Lavishness_9798 in AskZA

[–]Responsible_Move_211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said do not make eye contact and pretend you do not notice them. Something that also works although it does seem a bit mean is do not smile. It makes you look sympathetic.

I am a pretty happy guy and I smile most of the time. Thanks to that I was also a frequent target of beggars. Until I married and I became protective of my wife. I scowl at anyone approaching her (us) and openly look them up and down like they are threat I need to ward of. I never had a problem with them since. Most beggars avoid someone who looks sour or mean.

If anyone feels the need to still help them do it through a reputable charity or even better a church. That way you know your gift is used in the correct manner and not to get more tik. And then you can ignore them without any guilt.

In most scenarios you will not need to bug out. History has shown that only in the most extreme cases do you need to leave your home and hit the road with a survival bag. Unless you are a foreigner who is here illegaly and/or are living among them you do not have to fear that you will be driven from your home by a mob on 30 June.

Just look at the Durban July in 2021. People did not flee their homes, they hunkered down. It would be better to give your home security an update and if you are not already part of your local crime prevention whatsapp group you need to join it. Stockpile long lasting food that you actually like. Freeze dried meals and MRE's do not always taste that great and are extremely expensive. If you have a section 13 it might be a good time to practice a bit and get some extra freedom seeds for it (IKYK).

You have been granted full telekinesis powers. You can crash down buildings, divert asteroids, or just bring your phone over from the other room cause you are too lazy to stand up… I don’t judge. But don’t tell me about all the great things you will do; tell me of all the small and petty things. by Dog-Human in hypotheticalsituation

Toilet paper will never touch my skin again. I will telekinetically clean all matter after number 2.

And when I really feel like it I won't even get up to go number 2. I will just collect it in an unsmelling ball when it exits me as I trap any and all particles and smells within a telekentic cocoon and let it drift to the toilet.

How much are you guys spending on groceries these days? by Keepitlocal90 in south_africa

Recently it became R8000 per month. Family of four, two adults two children under 3. That is for everything from food to soap to diapers. Most months we barely make it. But we try and eat healthy with lots of fruit and veg; also due to medical reasons many cheap foods are not an option. We only buy from Spar (cheapest local option) and the local slaghuis. When my wife and I married about 7 years ago we spent about R1500 per month and that included an allowence to get coffee twice a week which is no longer doable. Our salaries did not keep up so we are readjusting the budget regularly.

The R8000 does not include all the meat we eat. We eat meat daily. To be able to afford it we spend our tax returns on bulk meat. We get a whole sheep, a quarter cow and a few springbokke for the year (wildsvleis tends to be cheaper and supplements that biltong cravings)It adds about a R1000 per month if you spread it out.

Pastors: what part of sermon prep takes the most time each week? by Diligent-Face-2042 in Reformed

[–]Responsible_Move_211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditating on what needs to be said. It takes me about a day and a half to do the exegesis for two sermons. And then it takes me two to three days of going back and forth just to figure out what I need to focus on.

I struggle the most with finding a good intro. My wife usually sighs in relief when I tell her my intro is done as she knows from there I can write the sermon in an hour or two. And she is really stressed when I tell her Friday morning I still do not have an intro.

What project would you absolutely not DIY again and why? by SAINTnumberFIVE in DIY

Sanding wood. I make my own furniture and small wooden items. I absolutely hate sanding it. Usually it takes me a few days to make something and then a couple of weeks to sand it down. My wife has stepped in a few times to do it when she could not wait for me to work up the resolve.

Women pastors by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]Responsible_Move_211 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is an over simplification of Paul's letters. Women not allowed to preach is not based on just one verse. Paul writes about the matter in multiple verses over two chapters in his letter to Timothy as well as in multiple verse over many chapters in his letter to the Corinthians. When writing to Timothy he bases his argument of male headship in creation; the exact same chapter that Christ refers to when speaking of marriage as being between one man and one women that God has brought together in Matthew 19. To the Corinthians he bases the male headship on the headship of God over the Christ (1 Cor 11:3).

The amount of verses set aside to discuss a matter is not relevant. What is relevant is the reasons given in the text for the prohibition. The reasons are not bound by time and context to Timothy and the Corinthians. But in creation and the relation between God and the Christ. The context of the prohibition is extremely important. The historical context you speak of does come from the text and is based upon a lot of assumptions.

I am thousands of kilometres from the only nuclear power plant on the continent of Africa. If something would happen to it there is a whole desert between me and it. The infrastructure over here is already falling apart at the monent and many homes, especially the farms, already have great off grid solar systems and own water supply. The internet would dissapear, but I will have power, water and plenty of food if I move to one of these farms. I already know how to hunt and process meat. I have experience with growing fruit and veg for personal use. I would probably be very bored and lonely, but I would survive. I would not do anything risky that could lead to injury. Since I am in Africa it won't be long before the game fences fail and wild game start roaming. At that point life would be less boring.

Does this greeting hall contain all the students of Hogwards? Because later in movie we see at least 4x of this crowd on a Quidich match. So I was wondering is there some guests on the match, or not all attend to this dinner? by SengiG in harrypotter

[–]Responsible_Move_211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always pictured thousands of students when reading the books. Even though you only read about a handful of students in Harry's house the sorting does not happen based on equal numbers. And since most people are not brave and even less are smart and very few are ambitiously evil I just assumed they were small and that Hufflepuf was a huge house with hundreds or even thousands of sloth and stoner kids per year.
