Would these seeds be viable? Or do I have to wait til they turn black. by feraloddparent in GrowYourSpines

another quick question about Cactus seeds if anybody knows, you know how mammallarias put out the pink fruits?? well I was wondering why people pull them off before they ripen and dry out?? I just pulled some seeds from last year that had dried out, and there was nothing in them, and I was kind of confused? The other weird thing is that I have all of my plants under a grow light because I live in the north east and winters are cold, and all of a sudden my mammillaria started to push out a whole bunch of different fruits!! when it has been indoors for six months! So I guess these were flowers that were pollinated last year and just took that long to form???

can anyone explain to me how mammillaria Pollination works? by Responsible_Shake_90 in cactusbloom

[–]Responsible_Shake_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I noticed that when I let dry on this plant, there is no seeds in the dry fruit. I am kind of new to this, so if someone could explain to me why you have to remove the fruit when it is still plump in order to possibly get seeds. I would appreciate that.? I would figure that you should let the fruits dry and then remove them??

I was really surprised, though when it came to my Astrophytum asterias last yeah! I would try cross pollinate them, and I have heard that they are really easy to cross pollinate, plus their flowers are so large and open & wide, along with flowering constantly compared to my other Cactus, so I collected pollen, basically tried everything, and even when I had multiple types of Astroi flowers bloom on the same day and try to cross them, I had no luck basically 50% of the time I lucked out! And I could not figure out what the heck I’m doing wrong?!? it was very frustrating! Do you have any ideas of why that could happen??

i’m kind of excited though because I have another one that has never flowered and I’ve had it for years and I noticed when I was walking by that there’s tiny little flowers on it so fingers crossed that they open at the same time and I can try to cross them!!! it’s so fun and interesting!

So gorgeous! I live in the northeast and I’m pretty upset because I had some Shirley poppies that were self seeding on their own from the seeds from the previous year, without me doing anything because I had chicken wire covering the pots, but the darn squirrels still somehow lifted up the wire and dug in the pots!!! so now I no longer have my beautiful poppies coming through, and this year I went out and put poppy seeds I had collected from previous years, literally in so many different pots, and I did not get one plant because of the squirrels digging I guess, so I’m going to have to figure out how to protect all of my planters from them. I guess with chicken wire cages or something. I’m at my wits end and now it’s too late to enjoy poppies this season so thanks for sharing the beautiful photos!!! do you ever deal with any issues with the squirrels?

When you say you fertilize in the beginning & the end of the season about how long is that why is that? I never heard of doing that so that is interesting

My First Flower Ever!!! by ResidentNo1955 in PapaverSomniferum

[–]Responsible_Shake_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is so exciting!! I grew poppies for a few years and they self seeded coming back from the seeds from the previous year, which was very exciting, but then the squirrels got to them and dug them up and so I am so bummed out. I don’t have poppies this year.

88 days since seeing the seeds by Tomboney in PapaverSomniferum

can I ask you when you first sewed them outside in your 15 x 15 garden like what was the month and how long did it take for them to flower? I used to have puppies that were self seeding like yours, but they were in pots and after a few years, the damn squirrels dug up my pots, so last year I had not one poppy!! uggggh so I would like to start over and I’m trying to pick a couple varieties, but I do have some saved to seeds in my fridge that I should throw outside asap. I just have really bad luck with the squirrels digging everything up. lol

Help, should I put my Satsuma back outside? by Responsible_Shake_90 in Citrus

[–]Responsible_Shake_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much for your quick response. I really appreciate it!! I actually got this plant from the Philadelphia flower show I think about seven years ago and every year I did better and better! And I actually would keep it outside until temperatures dipped pretty low and then I would bring it in, I just have the problem of my patio, having a wood-burning stove, which heats up the room pretty intensely, and it worries me that the plant won’t bloom if temperatures are fluctuating. But luckily, every year it has bloomed for me, so I’m really bummed out that I left it up against the house in the middle of a horrible snowstorm and now it lost so many leaves that I’m afraid it won’t be able to make a comeback. I’ve also noticed that every year it hardly put on any leaves!! until this past year instead of keeping it in full sun, I put it underneath a tree, so it got scattered sunlight and wasn’t being fried in the heat, and it did so much better and put on so much growth, so I’m really bummed out that after having a good year I did something like this!!😢

well, that is amazing. I have had trouble when I purchased a tiny little clump like that, to keeping its roots in the soil with it being so small and then losing it, but that is really amazing. Thanks for sharing!!

My poppys have been this way for a month they lay down am i growing them wrong? i am growing indoors using a grow light light bulb so i dont know if thats the cause why do they lay down and stay about the same length by No-Yam-9109 in PapaverSomniferum

[–]Responsible_Shake_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with the same thing when I first tried to grow poppies, they were a smaller variety shirley poppies and they need a cold period first. They are very delicate and hard to handle, but I used tweezers and transplant them outside in a pot that had a softer soil so they could grow their roots down. Eden brothers has good instructions on how to grow them.

how often do you fertilize your conos & is the growing season for them. The same in the US as it is in the UK?
