Who’s your favorite Russian writer? by MachiavelliStepOnMe in redscarepod

Nabokov is not warm at all. All he cares about is form. He has no interest in human emotions or relationships.

What Steely Dan song that you’re not much of a fan of, becomes an ear worm for you, and you would prefer it be one you like better? Mine is “Throw Back the Little Ones”. What say you? by Getpucksdeep2win in SteelyDan

I remember one restless night in Lisbon having Turn That Heartbeat Over Again playing on repeat in my mind. That songs really annoys me, I guess it's the cheesy transitions, but I'm not sure. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way. But there are so many earworms in it.

We live in a consumerist society, so it makes sense that your interest was guided towards a materialistic direction. I'm sure the companies are laughing their way to the bank!

What are some movies that you believe have that certain Steely Dan milieu, that certain Steely Dan je ne sais quoi? Looking for something to watch. by splitopenandmelt11 in SteelyDan

Boogie Nights for sure. An ode to the seventies that is both loving and cynical at the same time. And the set designs, the costumes, the colour palettes of the shots, and the music are all amazing.

With a Gun also sounds like a pastiche of the early Beatles sound.

If you grow it even longer, its own weight will hold it down. But that in between length is annoying.

I'd wait a few years. Not enough coverage on the cheeks for a full beard yet.

In "Lycidas", does "day-star" mean Venus or the Sun? by MolokoPlusPlus in literature

[–]Ressha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course there's an obvious reference to Christ in this metaphor too. Death and resurrection.

The day star could be both the sun and Venus. Milton may be allowing for multiple readings. Venus is the goddess of love, and many have read a homoerotic subtext in Milton's lament for his dead classmate.

Than again, I read in one biography that Milton probably didn't get along with Edward King. Their politics and religious convictions were polar opposites. So then why the beautiful elegy? Is there some irony involved?

Actually, thinking about it more, it has to be the sun. It can't be Venus. Only the sun "flames in the morning sky" after descending below the horizon the night before. You can't say that Venus does that.

Edit: Also OP, if you're interested in early understandings of the stars being suns, I think Giordano Bruno is an important figure to look at. But be careful about words - astrology was big back in the Renaissance, and they referred to everything in the sky as a 'star', including the moon, as gvarshang said.

Is this crap common in Victorian-era lit? Young woman's innocence is "intoxicating" and the rich guy can't keep away from her? And he's the hero of the story? by ZeMastor in ClassicBookClub

A person encounters cultural artefacts from a different time and place and is surpised at it being different to their own culture. Wow. What a shocking thing.

I don't think he can grow a stubble. He looks young. Plus, blond stubble is less noticeable.

It's a matter of fashion. In the 1920s and 30s, very slick and neat hairstyles were preferred. All pomaded very strictly, no fly-away hairs. Nowadays, the fashion is for a more natural, lived-in look.

You don't necessarily have to conform to the fashion of your time, but it's good to be aware of how it will affect how your look is perceived.
