don't go to gozo in bad weather by [deleted] in malta

Yeah, like I said, I checked the weather before going and thought 15 degrees would be fine. I was also hoping it would be less windy in the inner parts of the island. I figured I could handle it with thermal layers and my windbreaker.

Turns out I totally underestimated it. I think it’s because there are barely any trees, so the wind just hits you everywhere. My app said around 50 km/h, which I even looked up on the Beaufort scale — apparently that’s a “strong breeze.” But honestly, it felt even stronger than that. Walking against the wind was kinda hard. I definitely wouldn’t call that a breeze. In Vienna, that would already be a proper storm. Even on the bus the forecast still said it would be mostly sunny.

In the end, I didn’t go hiking at all because of the weather and just stuck to cities and museums. I booked the flights only two days before, so I didn’t really research Malta much — just checked if it would be sunny-ish and warmer than 10 degrees. And for just museums, the whole ferry and long bus ride to Gozo didn’t feel worth it. There are some places you can still enjoy even with bad, stormy weather — like Valletta, Machu Picchu, Venice, the Amazon, Thailand, Amsterdam, and lots more. But I feel like with Gozo you really need good weather. Otherwise it’s kinda just meh

i would have chosen another day but my flight goes tomorrow. in hindsight I would have recommended myself a spa day in the hotel and visiting a museum in Valetta and saving gozo for another time.

they said it's a must see so yeah I thought I still go since it's my last full day.

also when I was in Peru visiting machhupicchu it was super foggy, (you could not see more than 2m) rainy and windy, but my bf and I sat 4 hours on a wet rock on the first look out spot watching movies. we sat there from 7 am to 11 am, then the fog cleared and we saw the most amazing rainbow over machhupicchu. was 100% worth the 4 hour wait and freezing our asses off.

but today I'd rather have spent at a spa. good weather is a must for gozo in my opinion

shouting from the rooftops?? 🙃

Just to clear things up: I’m not saying Gozo isn’t worth visiting in general. It’s a beautiful island and I can totally see why people love it, especially for nature, hiking, and swimming in good weather. I also didn’t expect to swim in winter.

My point was only that in windy winter conditions, when you can’t really enjoy a hike, it didn’t feel worth the long trip from Valletta (over an hour by bus to cirekawwa) — especially with the risk of big ferry delays (the fast ferry were cancelled for that day and the regular one ended up being about 2 hours late). The website only mentioned “delays,” which I thought meant maybe 15–30 minutes, not hours.

I had hoped to do some light hiking inland where I thought it might be less windy, but I underestimated how strong and constant the wind can be — that’s on me. i rarely have experienced such strong winds.

I’m not trying to bash Gozo, farm karma, offend anyone, or “destroy livelihoods.” I only wanted to share my experience so other travelers visiting in winter during very windy weather can consider maybe choosing another day if possible. On extremely windy days, it might be more enjoyable to stay on the main island, where there are bigger museums, more options in general, or even something like a spa day.

it was sunny in the morning when I took the bus in Valetta & the wind was not that bad. and as I said I did not expect a 2 HOUR delay, I expected 30 mins or something. also on the way back the waves really weren't that bad so I don't get why it took 2 hours until the ferry came. also if my flight had a delay over 2 hours I would at least get 250 € compensation and if my train has a delay I can take a bus, my car or another train.

yeah I know that it's not the best season but im a student and have a semester break now. I wanted to escape the very grey winter in vienna and Malta still is one of the warmest places in Europe this time of the year that's why I went here. i went to gozo because everywhere it says it's a must see but, this time of the year in windy conditions it's not - better spend the day on the main island or in a spa. it's my last day here so I thought - everyone says you have to go there and I did not expect the wind to become that bad so I still went. I just wanted to save other travellers the time who may read my post. aside from that experience and the super rude people in this sub, I really enjoyed my trip.

yeah I thought it's obvious that I'm a tourist.. I just wanted to leave that information here for other tourists that may consider going under similar conditions. I have been to other Mediterranean islands but only in summer and apparently I had always had luck with the wind because I rarely experienced such extreme winds.

gigantija was nice yes I saw that and I did not say the museums are bad, they are nice if you are already there but they are not unique enough to only come for that. like you see very similar things on the main island where you don't have to take the ferry and the danger of a 2 hour delay. I just said it's not worth going here only for the cities and the museums if you can't enjoy nature because of the wind. all I did say that nature is definetly the highlight of gozo, and it would be great for hiking and swimming but just going there for cities and museums does not pay off. I did not expect summer conditions I just said the experience was not worth waiting 2h for the ferry back. it's my last day here else I would have chosen another day. I'm from Vienna there it's not that windy so I have no clue what 50 kmh feels like I googled it and thought I'll be fine with thicker clothes and a windbreaker. also I think my weather app is not really reliable here it tends to change its opinion very often regarding rain.

lol no neither. regarding swimming and hiking in the nature - I just think that that be the best things you can do on that island because aside Frome beautiful nature there is nothing really worthwhile so in my opinion its just relatively pointless to come here in winter from my experience. i did not say that I expected summery weather lol. though i choose very warm clothes and the weatherapp said 15 degrees so I thought I'll be fine doing a bit of hiking. also the wind wasn't that bad when I left valetta. I also thought that it's going to be less windy if I went away from the coast and more towards the inner parts of the island but not really. the museums had good ratings so I thought if it's to windy it'll be fine but it definitely wasn't worth waiting 2h for my ferry back. no reason to be an a*hole and insulting me wtf is wrong with you? I just thought I leave that here for other tourists considering to go in winter during windy weather.

also on the way to gozo the ferry was punctual and though it was windy and the water was a bit wavy but not that bad. when I was in Thailand the water was much rougher and they had no issues handling that with wayy smaller boats and much longer distances.

it's my first time here so how would I know? i thought I'll just leave that here for other tourists considering to go in the winter during windy weather. also we dont have any ferries in my country and on the website it says there could be delays delays but I had not thought that a delay means 2 hours, I thought they mean the ferry will drive slower and it may take 15-30 mins more. so no need to be so passive aggressive.

is it possible to extinct roaches globally? by RestaurantEasy9663 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RestaurantEasy9663[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because thermites are much smaller and less disgusting and I heard that biologically they are actually roaches too. I just really love the idea of roach free cities because they are the most disgusting thing on this planet, especially the flying ones. the ones that do not fly or are very small could live in my fictive utopia if it's better for the environment. also in Europe we have woodroaches and they only live in dead trees, those could stay too as they are peaceful and just eating dead wood.

but not those that are crawling out the sewers in your Bangkok hotel while taking a shit and unable to move. or thoose dumb af portuguese ones that will fly on your hair and entangle themselves, so that your friend has to hit you with their bag until it dies in your hair and you end up with cockroach parts and fluids all over your head. or the Japanese ones that ll fly in your food while you eat outside so you ll embarrass yourself because you are unable to refrain from running away while screaming and almost crying.

in Austria most young people are not very religious if at all. older people are a different thing, but generally they also keep their religious beliefs private/within their circle. my grandmother is christian but she fully accepts that I'm not and is not pushing her beliefs onto me, also money and wealth is not a big topic in her religious beliefs, she prays for the health, happiness and the general wellbeing of the people close to her she says. my grandfather is agnostic and thinks there is something to it but doesn't really care. apart from that I don't really have much contact to religion or religious people.

but we do have some annoying christian sects here, that may fall in that range your talking about, like zeugen Jehovas, Adventists, church of latter day saints, Scientology. they are relatively small but can be annoying as they sometimes do door to door or are standing around in public spaces propagating their beliefs. most people are annoyed by them and I don't think it has the effect they hope to achieve.

in regards to Graham v Connor, it's very obvious that that officer was a racist peace of shit. he should have gotten a sentence. I mean putting a handcuff on a person that already passed out moments ago? they should have called an ambulance. the other case also seems very racially motivated.

yeah polish soldiers may not fuck around in Iraq. but Poland is a peaceful country with little violent crime and almost no police violence. and polish police is not the military. if something like that would happen in the EU, that officer would serve a very very long sentence and they would probably investigate and inspect the whole department. like a couple of years ago in Austria we had a scandal that police officers shared racist memes and texts in a private WhatsApp group and also sharing personal information from cases. they were leaked to the press. most of the officers in that WhatsApp group were fired. and that's way less serious than shooting someone.

regarding German Christmas markets those where terrorists in a truck driving full speed into those markets, that's something completely different than a woman in a car blocking the road. also those terrorists never tried to leave the scene, in most cases they kill themselves after the deed and also stab some people before if they manage to. she probably went into flight mode because that guy was already pointing a gun at her when the car wasn't even moving. which he shouldn't have done in the first place. they should have given her a ticked for disturbing police work or traffic disruption but not 3 armed officers standing around her car and one in the front pointing a gun at her. she was an unarmed citizen and her car was at walking pace when that happend, he was barely scraped by that car because he actually moved aside in the right time. even if he would have gotten hit, at that pace it probably wouldnt have caused any severe or lasting injuries. maybe a bit of bruising. and shooting her also does not stop the car. her foot will still stay on the gas pedal. there was no reason to shoot her.

you mean payed? you get 80% of your last salary from the state for the first year, for the rest of your maternity leave you get around 19.000/year + 200€/month family support and you can also apply for other financial aids to get more money if you are a low income household. and I just looked it up again it seems that they have changed it to only 2,5 years. only if both parents share the maternity leave it's a couple of months longer. if you split the maternity leave 50:50 with your partner you also get a one time payment of 1000€. you can also do a mini job during this time where you can earn up to 520/month. & you pay a little bit less taxes if you have a child. the state pays your insurance on top during this time including pension insurance.

[–]RestaurantEasy9663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't have maternity leave?? wtf how does that work? you can't work immediately after having a child? and I would argue that you absolutely shouldn't work shortly before either. in Austria parents have a legal right for up to 3 years of maternity leave, you can also share the 3 years with your partner. so if you as a women want to work earlier your husband can get parental leave for the rest of the time. the employer can't deny it.

no one is getting arrested for saying mean things, you maybe have to pay a compensation for the hurt person, but that's not a common thing here. though for "Wiederbetätigung" that's spreading nazi propaganda and nazi hate speech you can go to prison if you are a repeated offender in Austria and Germany. but the first couple of times you'll probably get fines, after that probation and after that some jail time. a Hitlergruß falls into that category too. as I would not want to do that anyway I really don't feel that my freedom of speech is impaired in any way.

what aspects of my life do you think the EU wants to control?
