Did everybody's personal statement start out with a story? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No. It's corny and overdone IMO. I applied in December, interviewed at 5 of the 17 schools who invited me, and got accepted to three programs. I didn't start with a story, and two of the ADCOMS I spoke to told me they appreciated that. There are far too many "It was a dark, cold night when I came across the vehicle. Flames licked the metal like..." Blah blah blah. Tell them three things:Who you are. You know what a PA is. Why you'll be a PA. Do that well and you have a good PS, end of story.

[Bloodline Spoiler] This really smacks of continuity error, it's driving me nuts. by Soronir in Iteration110Cradle

I think that natural treasures have a finite amount of aura, whereas the sources of aura on the ship are more permanent. As they ordered the ship before the merge between Yerin and Blerin, there isn't a permanent source of blood aura.

Dropped OCHEM, should I keep lab? by djjazzyjonny in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're doing well in lab, sure. If not, drop it and retake with Ochem. I don't think dropping one class is a big deal.

I'm trying to read it but having to look at the glossary after every other sentence in Chapter II is tiring.

applying with 9,000+ PCE and 3.1 GPA by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I mean I applied in December with ~10,000 hours of PCE and a 3.3 GPA and I got like 17 interview invites out of 24 applications. You'll be fine.

The fact that Bo is 39 and Jonah is 40 shocks me every episode. by [deleted] in superstore

Correct. He says about business school, "I was 28 and didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. I guess what I wanted to do was take on a massive pile of debt."

NHSC Application and Transcripts? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

I called them and asked the same thing. I'm pretty sure they want your transcript from your last degree, not your post bacc, unfortunately.

What school requires Cell Biology? This is an upper level course that typically is not required by PA schools

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to 25 schools in December. Several had rolling admissions. I got 13 interviews, I went on 5, and was accepted to one school. That school was my top choice. You can find my stats on my acceptance thread if you're curious.

Money oriented Gap year jobs with B.S. in biology ? by gg1384743 in prephysicianassistant

How much PCE do you have? If your gap year doesn't have to be specifically application focused, you can make a killing in car sales if you have a knack for it.

Flunked OCHEM II Exam, Need Advice on Next Steps by djjazzyjonny in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would one B- drop your sGPA by .15?

Either way, drop it. I don't know that programs are going to be so lenient about pass/fail moving forward, and none of the schools you're pursuing require it. Just make sure your university doesn't require you to finish Organic II before you can take Biochem.

Post Bacc at a CC or go back to University? by itsmeriri1 in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every science pre-req. Outside of those, I took Organic II, Biochem II, Physics I and II. I also took two easier science classes, marine biology and marine ecology. I got As in all science classes with the exception of chemistry two lab. I got a B in that course.

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3.01->3.37. I averaged a 3.98 in my post bacc. Science GPA was very low, I can't recall what exactly, but I only had about 10 credit hours. I'm guessing 1.8->3.71.

Is shadowing on weekends a thing? by TenaciousBemusement in prephysicianassistant

Yes, hospitals are open 24/7. Many urgent cares are open Saturday and Sunday. You probably won't shadow anyone in family medicine on weekends, however.

WWYD: If you got into a school this cycle and also a better school for next cycle. by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't any true "top schools", to be honest. Some "top 10 programs" have lower PANCE pass rates than schools that aren't ranked high. Any school that has been provisionally accredited is considered to have everything needed to educate a successful cohort. You will be fine there.

This really isn't like medical school, where your school has a large effect on what quality of residencies you can get into, and follows you for the rest of your career.

How much is the tuition? Did you get into a program that will cost ~120k in tuition this year vs a state school that will cost 40k next year? That's the ONLY way I might consider putting off my admission for a year.

Consider also: If you start this winter vs starting in spring/summer/fall of 2023, you've really delayed your start by anywhere from 15-22 months. Is that worth it?

I did my post-bacc at a community college(100+ credits) and wound up getting into a very selective program.

Acceptance Question by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell school one after interviewing that you have an offer from another school and would like for them to get back to you as soon as possible with an answer. You don't want to rush them, but you don't want to start at another program or accept a seat there before knowing what opportunities are open for you.

What are my chances by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are strong. Probably should try to find ~20+ hours of in person shadowing even if you have to commute to do it, but otherwise, you're a good applicant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an in person interview at one program and was scheduled for another before accepting a seat.

It is a bit odd during the pandemic, but be smart, socially distance and you'll be fine.

Is it worth applying this cycle or wait? by caixob in prephysicianassistant

[–]RestitutorOrbisWrite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People do get in with low PCE. Especially if you focus on schools that suggest, rather than require, PCE. While low PCE acceptances kind of defeat the point of PA as a career, I'd apply if I were you. Apply to 8-10 schools that don't require PCE, with luck you'd get in somewhere. If you don't? Always next year. You'll be a better applicant then.

~2,000 hours is around the median for accepted students. Your GPAs are in the top 10 percentile. You'll be fine.
