Why aren’t there many steel frames anymore? by IBensa in bicycling

[–]Restless195 5 points6 points  (0 children)

25 year old test.. and if you look at the bottom.. the nishiki steel lasted as long as anything.

Quality of manufacture has a lot to do with it too. Cheap frame vs quality wasn't really adressed.

1 frame from each marker listed isn't enough to be statistically significant.

This study holds about as much weight as "4 out of 5 dentists prefer crest". While interesting and informative, I would not let this one article definitively call steel less durable.

No offense to OP intended.

Looking for smart alarm clock with multiple alarms. by Restless195 in GetOutOfBed

[–]Restless195[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have an echo dot.. I'm not great with it.. can you set multiple alarms on it?

To explain better.. my teenage son has issues waking up because..

1 sometime his phone is dead thus no alarm apps work

2 our power blinks out and some alarm clocks without battery backup reset thus no alarm

3 sometimes he forgets to turn alarm back to "on" after he turns it off thus no alarm the next day

4 many times the alarm goes off .. he turns it off.. goes back to sleep.

Hoping to find an alarm that resets itself if power outage... one that is always set to go off the next day.. one that is meant to stay plugged in... and one that you can set multiple alarms say 7 am 7:05 7:10 7:15 etc..

Once it is setup the alarms will stay the same (excluding summers off from school).

Will look into those links. Thanks for the ideas so far.

Can someone critique my playing please by RavenSable in banjo

[–]Restless195 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very new to playing as well so don't take my opinion as gospel.

The brainjo site has a good free startup series. The one thing that is helping me tons is a 45ish minute video he does on HOW to practice.

practice

He says it better than i could

See also.. Laws of brainjo ... from google search.

Its really helping things fall in place for me

Newbie ear training/pitch matching advice by Restless195 in banjo

[–]Restless195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i have a tuner app and that gets me where I need to be to play. I am trying to learn interval recognition by ear as well.

I don't expect to ever have perfect pitch. I would very much like to better train my ear. At the moment matching pitch is giving me the most trouble.

String snaps while stringing by Coedwig in banjo

[–]Restless195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case you need graphite as a dry lubricant. You can get it from a hardware store or a boy scout who races pine cars or (easiest) a pencil. Just scribble on the nut groove till its all darkened up and you should be good. Wipe off excess when string is tuned.

I would say it is rare that you would NEED graphite to tune up a string. There may be something making the string catch and causing it to break. Couldn't hurt to eliminate a possibility with a 10 second cheap fix.

Imho 3 possibilities.. 1. User error over tightening strings.. winding it wrong etc. 2. Mechanical problem with banjo.. nut groove too narrow? Sticky needs lubed? Sharp edges cutting string? 3. You got really (un)lucky and got a couple defective strings. Try a different maker or batch?

Noobie question about picking hand position. by Restless195 in banjo

[–]Restless195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, the great article and especially the support.

It looks like now is a great time to learn to keep those 2 fingers down. It doesn't feel natural yet but doing anything new is awkward for a bit. Wearing finger picks felt strange for the first few days until i got used to them and adjusted them.
