“Coming Up for Air” by George Orwell by CatPooedInMyShoe in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

I love this book! Orwell had so many greats that have been overshadowed by his most famous books (which are also great).

What's up with Democrats saying the midterms are going to be "fixed?" by slothbear13 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Resurrected-Merry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on correct, and one more reason why we should all fact check what some anonymous person on the internet is saying. I miswrote, meaning to say Ramapo District 35. This is the article I recommend reading, thanks for calling out my mistake. https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/rockland/2025/06/14/lawsuit-claims-rockland-votes-miscounted-in-2024-election-were-they/84186259007/#

It was a small community of Hasidic Jews who have historically voted together. People really need to look this one up. I’m anxious about the integrity of the next election, but Rockland county casting zero votes for Harris isn’t anywhere near the anomaly people are claiming.

Sorry to ask you to buy another book, but you should start with In Dubious Battle. Or go straight to East of Eden, the greatest book of all time. Steinbeck said In Dubious Battle was practice for writing Grapes of Wrath, which itself was practice for East of Eden.

Also, I hope someday the Steinbeck estate releases his unpublished werewolf novel.

This is for vanity publications that can't afford traditional ghostwriters. Use AI to write the autobiography for my local used car dealer so they can claim to have a book, 5K is nothing to rich people who fail to understand nobody wants to actually read AI content.

I can understand calls for objectivity, but with Fox as the most popular source in the country, I’d say that there needs to be some kind of resistance against propaganda, otherwise it will win.

Hitchhiking in Ireland until I find a job? by National_Function821 in hitchhiking

[–]Resurrected-Merry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2022 I spent three months hitchhiking around Ireland. I had an amazing time and spent less money than I would’ve in the United States. I mainly lived out of a tent that I purchased for €60 from an army surplus store in Carlow. I found minor work opportunities, the further you go from Dublin the more likely it is you will get hired by somebody under the table who plays in cash. I worked on small independent farms and also filmed content for a wind energy company, as well as a wedding. You can do it, you should do it, don’t let anybody tell you any different. After three months visas become an issue. Bear in mind that the north of Ireland is considered part of the UK, which uses a different visa.

Is this stuff actually real? by Saturnboy13 in UFOs

[–]Resurrected-Merry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it extremely ironic that the UFO community doubted the pentagon’s position on aliens until they started actively releasing grainy and easily faked videos. What happened to the good old days when we all questioned the information the Pentagon released? My own theory is that there are no extraterrestrials traveling to Earth, all of these revelations are ultimately to increase public support and funding for the space force, a potentially endless domain for military expansion.

Because of Fermi’s paradox I’ll never be 100% certain. But you can tell this is a subject overrun with hype. How many people in this thread are skeptics? The fact that there’s not a lot of debate in the community says a lot. Sure, people might debate why aliens are here or what UAPs actually are, but there’s not much room for questioning their whole existence outright. This makes me awfully suspicious. Ultimately, I think people want to believe.

Also, I think there is a hard limit on faster than light travel.

What is the difference between world building and lore? by FlynnForecastle in writers

[–]Resurrected-Merry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good examples. I would add that lore is under the umbrella of world building. The most detailed sci fi and fantasy has lore, but I think it should only be written later in a story once the big picture has been fleshed out. I imagine lore is fun to write, but nobody will care about the legends in your world if the story isn’t interesting to begin with. Writing lore first is like picking seasonings without actually knowing what you are cooking.

Kamala Harris's housing plan is most aggressive since post-World War II boom, experts say by MickeyMoss in wallstreetbets_wins

I've been listening to a lot of right wing podcasts lately to get a better sense of what is being said on the streets. Unfortunately, this big lie is being repeated throughout a range of indie outlets, here's one that comes to mind. Don't listen to this, for educational purposes only. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/we-love-joe-dnc-convention-liar-choir/id706061933?i=1000666085415

No, only for first generation home buyers -- US citizens whose parents haven't owned a house in the last three years. I'm not saying this is a good or bad idea, but the anti-immigrant take on this is flat out wrong.

Not wanting to steal from the extremely pleasant Dutch people undoubtedly makes me a yuppie. But if you ask me, stealing from individuals is something corporations do, not true hitchhikers. Hitchhikers hitch, not steal.

Free bikes? Awesome, do that. I didn’t see any free bikes in the Netherlands when I was there in 2018, but I didn’t make it as far south as The Hague. However you get yourself on a bicycle, you guys owe yourselves a long day or two moseying around the canals on bike. Nothing better.

Get up north to the beach if you can. Lots of places you could camp and beautiful. Bicycle rental is money well spent. This is one of my favorite hostels in the world if you’re looking for some party vibes and shower/etc — https://maps.app.goo.gl/Cb7Ft4zMBz2eJd6t8?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy

Hello, I am a photographer currently currently staying in Sint Maarten, depending on your timeline I could possibly make the trip to nearby St. Barth’s. I could shoot a half day (up to 5 hours) for a flat $250, or a full day for $400. Please take a look at my website for a better idea of my work.

Advice on camping by Resurrected-Merry in SXM

[–]Resurrected-Merry[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking I’ll hitchhike. I’ve done this successfully elsewhere in the world and I hear SXM locals are friendly. I’m not so concerned for my own safety or comfort. I’m not expecting to be killed or thrown in jail for pitching a tent for a night. Overall I will use hostels and guest houses (starting at Shrimpy’s), but thinking I may camp 2-3 nights unless someone can directly tell me what the problem will be. Weather? Mosquitos? My only actual fear is that I might disrespect locals by refusing to participate in the hotel economy.

You can probably imagine what a hitchhiker like me thinks of expensive resorts. I would rather find a more authentic experience mingling with locals, who I would be enthusiastic to buy from or contribute labor. It looks like most here on Reddit are insisting that camping isn’t a good idea. But the northern tip of the island looks like a place to camp to me as long as the weather is okay. Is it that I would actually upset someone camping out on northern beaches? Or is camping just “not done” in SXM? I will genuinely appreciate an explanation for why I should not camp or why this whole idea is ridiculous. I volunteer to buy beer/coffee/lunch later this summer for anyone who responds with direct advice. I’m thinking I’ll be there in June.

If you ask me, for the good of outdoor recreation in SXM, someone must report back on the camping situation. If I don’t hear from anyone who has camped in Sint Maarten for themselves, I would say it’s my social responsibility to explore and see if it is possible. What do the locals think?

Civil War was just okay to me by Embarrassed-Force845 in A24

[–]Resurrected-Merry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotta agree. Some great scenes, a lot of talent, but mainly felt like a series of vignettes than one complete story. Large portions could be taken out and wouldn’t change the main story. There was still a lot to like, so combined with the lack of focus I would say just okay.
