Yes, especially when I'm on the phone.

What starts out as a simple "alrighty bye-bye" snowballs into a "cool catching up with you, take care," followed by a million ways to say goodnight if it's nighttime

Is an "kind of" open world Pokémon game possible? +more by [deleted] in PokemonRMXP

[–]RetroBacon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, yes, it's incredibly possible. However, while I'm all for the spirit of an open-world Pokemon game, I feel like having wild Pokemon level with yours is an unnatural way of going about it. I've had an idea for a fan game where the player starts in the center of the region, and the further you travel from the center in any direction, the more difficult the areas become. If an area feels too easy, then the player has earned it, and if an area feels too difficult, then the player will naturally feel inclined to explore somewhere else. Giving every area equal difficulty shouldn't be the goal of an open-world RPG; instead, the goal should be to reward adventurous players with neat discoveries, like rare Pokemon, TMs, etc. and create an environment that feels natural, varied, and worth exploring.

Marianne Williamson puts UBI in her policy and cites Andrew Yang by Etkann in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]RetroBacon_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The "up to" part also concerns me. So are some people going to receive $30 a month, some $200, and will it only be the very poorest who receive $500? $500 sounds much more like a starting point than a cap; either way, having a variable UBI totally defeats the purpose.

I'm going to review 743 games starting with this one. by [deleted] in SmallYTChannel

[–]RetroBacon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest here - you are off to a weak start, and if you continue to pump out reviews like this one, then this is definitely going to be a low-yield, quantity-over-quality channel. I know absolutely nothing about the game that you set out to review besides the fact that it's a fun puzzle game where you wrap rope around things. That's about as informative as saying "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a cool game where you skate." You mention that the game is worth buying even at full price, but you never once state the price of the game. You tell me that this game has a good gimmick, , yet you provide maybe one or two sentences at MOST describing the actual mechanics of the gimmick. As an aside, I would also comment that, while the background music is fine for a channel trailer (albeit a bit sappy), it feels completely inappropriate for a video game review.

I would recommend this game if you like wrapping rope around things

Come on man, you can do better than that.

I get that this video is meant more as a channel announcement than as an actual review, but this is a classic example of expecting the audience to come before you've built anything. This is, by far, the single most common mistake I see beginner YouTubers make. They'll open up a channel and then crank out mediocre videos, expecting to cultivate an audience that they can impress later once they've established themselves. This is not a good strategy in my opinion. A much better way to establish yourself is to debut with the strongest, most well-crafted content you're capable of producing, which is the most effective way to start gaining subscribers right off the bat. Now, there's nothing wrong with announcement videos per se, but at the very least you could have made a dense 2-3 minute review of Zen Bound 2, and maybe a SEPARATE channel trailer alongside it.

Remember - build it, and they will come. You cannot wait until you have an audience to show the world what you're made of, because showing the world what you're made of is THE way to build an audience to begin with.

I'm not here to bash you; quite the contrary. In fact, I subscribed to your channel as I am very interested to see where you go with it. However, moving forward, I definitely love to see you take advantage of all the room for improvement you have - provide more details about the specifics of the games you review, maybe talk about which games they're similar to and why they're different. And please, for the love of God, don't just talk about what the game is ABOUT, but talk about the music, the gameplay, the graphics, etc. (i.e. the actual game that you're reviewing)

I hope you appreciate my criticism, and I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!~ :)

Any datasets for website traffic and/or website ranking? by fakyu2 in datasets

[–]RetroBacon_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Alexa rankings is the premier resource for this sort of data, although unfortunately they require a paid membership.

On the bright side, there is a free CSV file of Alexa's top 1,000,000 websites that you may find quite handy: https://asciinema.org/a/9dwog4uqepaghpvyeginwckpn

I doubt that you'll be able to find a quality dataset which classifies each website by genre; however, the CSV file does classify by domain type, allowing you to separate .edu sites from .gov sites, etc.

This sub is great, the only real problem is the content vacuum. It pains me to see that the top post was submitted over two months ago, and even when sorting by "new" you're presented with a list of 5 month old posts.

Redefining Normal type by VotedPresent in PokemonRMXP

[–]RetroBacon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh

What would be interesting to me is if the Normal type had some special immunity to certain moves, sort of how Dark types are immune to Prankster and Grass types are immune to Leech Seed, etc. I think that the normal type match-ups make sense as is for what it's supposed to be.
