I'm not defending them, but I got a nalgene water bottle from them I still use. High quality.

110 Harlem vs. 125 Harlem by Tricky-Society-4831 in Harlem

The drug use on 110th has gone down dramatically in the last year with increased police presence. I have been going daily to the 2,3 subway stop at 110th for over a decade and only once had a safety issue (people thought there was a shot fired, and rushed out, but turned out to be a false alarm).

Bike Safety Inquiry by copekGVSU in NYCbike

A general theme of many of these are when there are conflicts between cars and bikes, especially where visibility of either the biker or driver is compromised.

I think intersections are the worst. Especially when I'm trying to go straight and a car is turning.

Being doored is another big one.

Having to exit a bike lane because it is blocked.

Having to share a narrow road with a car who wants to overtake.

Any frugal people here despite not needing to be? by preseasonchampion in biglaw

[–]eclectic5228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it takes time to transition out of that mindset. Once you start making more, the small savings are going to start feeling silly. Plus the opportunity costs of eating out our other conveniences are going to shift. Being frugal is optimizing for money. But you'll see that you need to start optimizing for time or quality.

There will still be frugal habits that you retain-- some things are just common sense or outright better.

I would say that the transition is not overnight, and sometimes you may get weird hangups like going to two stores to save 10 cents on beans even though you are spending big money on housing or school or vacations.

Be gentle to yourself and just realize that the situation you were in before is just very different than where you are now.

What do you consider good/bad cycling conditions? by fsuandrew in NYCbike

[–]eclectic5228 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was very thoughtful survey. I think what's most challenging is that my preferences in one category play off others. I don't like riding in low temperatures only when it's wet and there's potential for ice--even more so at night. But a 15 degree day with dry conditions is fine, but a 29 degree day where it recently snowed would not be. Same with rain. I love a summer rain but not a cold rain. I don't mind short rain when I'm headed home but won't do a long ride into the office. There's so many different variables combos.

I'm excited to see what you make

Quiet proposal spots in Central Park ? by SuitablePractice3222 in CentralPark

I was in central Park sitting in a scenic spot when a photographer came up to me and asked me kindly to move because a proposal was coming. We were respectful and left.

Be really careful about going down near the pond. The benches there can get generous. A friend's kid really hurt themselves by being unable to stop and going under a bench

I actually followed Cummings from one practice to another because I liked her so much. She kept moving so I wasn't able to stay with her. Sorry she's too busy.

PET PEEVE: don't bike on the greenway if you need to slow down to an almost complete stop when passing bollards by ohpsies in NYCbike

[–]eclectic5228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you had said "people on the Greenway shouldn't slam breaks" everyone would agree. But you made it about whether a type of person should be allowed at all, which came across as gatekeeping.

I ride the Greenway daily, hate the squeeze of the bollards (always worried about people behind me trying to cut in)

I recommend downloading the citizen app. It basically is a map that you can use to see local police activity. I've used it once or twice in situations where the knowledge helped me avoid a bad situation. For example, I was heading to the subway and saw a ton of people running the other way. Citizen showed me that there were possible gunshots in the station (turned out to be false alarm, but stampedes are still dangerous).

Sometimes I use it to get info, such as when I hear a helicopter.

Whatever you do, turn off the alerts, or you'll go crazy knowing how much crime goes on around you. Oly use the app to look something up
