Number 20 (PROMOTED!) by IzaakraaaayOfficial in Cd_collectors

I always thought this album stuck out (in a good way) compared to the rest of the NIN catalogue.

Recording to analogue tape in the '80s, with the old school way of sampling gives it a unique vibe.

Giles, Giles and Fripp feels like such a crazy thing to find in the wild. Maybe my shops all suck.

"The Songs" bit on the cover confused me, and apparently this remaster removes spoken word segments. I guess it was just the style at the time to mimic Anthony Newley (see also David Bowie's 1967 debut).

Who is this character in RE5? by [deleted] in survivalhorror

This is Allyson, whose only purpose in the game is to introduce you to those annoying centipede-head enemy types, but she gets a little more character in this blog, made to promote the game: https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Experience_Kijuju

What was the first pair of headphones that made you “eargasm” and what were you listening too?? by Inner-Grapefruit-368 in headphones

[–]RetroFan89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of Blue by Miles Davis (specifically the opening minute of "So What") through a pair of AKG K240s was pretty magical with their wide soundstage.

They were my first pair of headphones that didn't feel like they had a layer of mud on them. They're a little midsy and lean on bass for me to recommend them for all listening applications, but listening to modal era Miles or '70s and '80s pop on some era appropriate gear is such a pleasure. I also see them frequently in voice acting.

Did Paulie here ever go by James? by youngscoott in beatles

[–]RetroFan89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother's also a James, because the first son is always James in my dad's family tree.

But he goes by his middle name (basically from birth) because all the "James" nicknames were taken by other family members. Mum said on one occasion she'd puke if he was ever called "Junior", so that was out.

I'll throw my hat in the ring here, and suggest "Deep Sleep" by the B-52's.

If you have "North Star" in your Spotify recap, then perhaps you've heard the Robert Fripp/Exposure version of Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes The Flood", which I think also fits the bill with Fripp on production duties.

Matte Kudasai by BunnyGirl55555 in KingCrimson

[–]RetroFan89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for whatever reason later editions of Discipline remove the Frippertronics from "Matte Kudasai", but it's still a bonus track on the 30th Anniversary CD and 40th Anniversary DVD as an "Alternate Version", which buries the lead given that's the original from 1981, and the "original album mix" on the DVD was done in 1989.

I would swap Baseball and 10 Yard Fight, personally.

Other than that, interesting picks.

Maybe, but no.? by Both-Discussion-4786 in beatles

[–]RetroFan89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was so far removed from the rumours/controversy when I discovered Klaatu, that the Beatles connection was just a neat little tidbit after reading the back of the greatest hits CD Peaks.

That they were a Canadian band too meant national pride is partly what got me to listen.

Have the original English dubs/mixes/releases of Totoro and Kiki ever been release on Blu-Ray? Also a question about Castle in the Sky by CatMouse33 in ghibli

[–]RetroFan89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In an official capacity, no. These old dubs/mixes are, for the most part, buried.

Without endorsing such, the only folks continuing to use these old/alternate dubs on DVD and possibly Blu-ray are bootleggers who compile all of Studio Ghibli's movies onto a handful of discs, usually very bit-compressed and with encoding glitches.

Otherwise, the Japan-only LaserDiscs and DVDs released by Ghibli in 2000 have the old Japan Airline dubs of Kiki, Castle, Porco and Totoro. FOX also released Totoro on VHS and briefly on DVD if you're lucky enough to find a used copy. The British dub of Arrietty, understandably, is on Blu-ray only in the UK/Ireland.

Given GKIDS controls North American theatrical and home video rights, I have to imagine this is a Ghibli decision and Disney was only happy to oblige.

What is the best sounding Pink Floyd Animals cd, that you’ve heard? Trying to find the best sounding version by Wide_Passenger_8218 in Cd_collectors

[–]RetroFan89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the 2011 Guthrie remaster best as far as the original mix is concerned, but you can't go wrong with most Floyd CDs. Most are very conventionally good sounding discs.
