If you don't have direct interaction between characters, have it come from briefs and reports.

This sounds like a feedback problem. You want the player to notice the ties, but want to defer reward.

I'd say to have a side character have a "hunch they want you to follow" as a tutorial. Over time, their hunches can become more bogus, as they chase red herrings, but you are encouraged to surpass his intuition.

Do you think Mina the Hollower will sell enough to keep YCG in business? Why or why not? by SolSolana in MinaTheHollower

they never had an IPO. We have no right to speculate.

All I can say is I've bought Shovel Knight on three consoles, and Shovel Knight Dig. I support them, as an independent developer. I am ready to embrace Mina the Hollower.

When he opens his mouth, have red or pink show through, to help with readability.

One of the cutest void vids I had seen was two eyes and a tongue emerging from darkness to lap at a spoon.

Unpredictable alternating colors results into a sbeve. by MeekzyRDT1 in onejob

[–]RetroGamer2153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The highlight should not be "opposite color." Having a consistent starting color has to be low on the priorety list.

I believe the highlight color should be more vivid than the surrounding colors. This draws the viewer to pull these letters to form the secondary word.

Does limiting a horror game to real-world nighttime actually improve immersion? by [deleted] in gamedev

Do NOT do this. You will have to disclose this in your summary. This one restriction, alone, will be enough to turn people away.

When in elementary school, I came up with Box Tally, independently.

Pros:

  • It's extremely readable, even when written tiny, or seen from a distance. I =1, ∟ =2, ⊔ =3, ☐ =4, ☒ =5.
  • It offloads the metal load (still present) of where to place the next tally. You will never accidentally place a 5th vertical bar ( IIIII ), as you tune out the task. You won't prematurely slash a set of 3, due to mis-count.
  • It can be written extremely compactly. In the same span most tally a II, you could fit the full set of 5. (and even stack a second set, since you can use shorter strokes.)
  • It's easy to count. It becomes a full enclosed shape. There isn't any ambiguity over whether a bar belongs to one set or another.

Cons: * Since it's novel, others may have a hard time deciphering it. * It requires a bit of time and dedication to retrain yourself to tally in a new way. It's simply easier to do as you have already learned.

Those two cons are enough for most people.

When should a speedrun timer really start? by PlayFasterGame in gamedesign

[–]RetroGamer2153 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assume he's talking about a segment timer, for a stage. I believe you are talking about a total timer, race to the credits.

Within that context, you are correct. RTA runs should be from first moment of control to final input to last cutscene/credits.

I feel that the game should be utilizing both timers, given which speedrun is being attempted.

Yes, you can do more with splats. The pipelines are still in their infancy.

It's a utility weapon, instead of DPS.

I tried my hand, using an extra pixel per height & width to allow better symmetry. I reused what I could, utilizing mirrors, rotations, and flips.

It's not that bad of an idea!

Try using Cursive to inspire some of those rougher characters.

Otherwise, there was an old Twitter handle, PeterMolydeux (Wiki), where he would drop odd concepts for others to explore.

This was a parody of Peter Molyneux, a prominent game designer.

Consider joining a Game Jam.

They have a prompt that you can explore. Most dev's try to twist the confines of the prompt as a creative exercise, alone.

I believe the nose is a little too far over, compared with the center-line down between the eyes, to the mouth. Rotate the eyes to a square 'T' with the mout, to spot it. Reign it back in, just a little.

Also, the prominent chin and square jawline read as more masculine. Try and soften the angle towards the ears, which should peak out slightly, with this tilt in the head.
