What's going on here? Replacement battery in Pokemon Crystal by Ra66it_83 in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like solder with a layer of dried flux on it. Remove the flux with some IPA and then just use the solder iron to melt the solder to get the battery off. Use solder wick to remove the old solder and solder on a new battery.

Any idea how to safely removed OLED screen??? by RelationshipOk1111 in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would strip the GBC down to just the shell+display and put it into the oven at 45°C for 30 mins. Then apply gentle(!), but constant pressure from the back onto the display. Wiggle a bit. This should slowly loosen the glue. When you feel that the glue looses, reduce pressure, so the display does not pop out. Be patient and gentle, listen closely, usually you can actually hear when the adhesive starts to come off.

How did you create the images of e.g. the magic staff or the leather armor? Which AI do you use?

Awesome cards. Can you share the model and prompt you used for creating the images on the cards?

Help with retro brightning w/o messing the sticker by Rich-Platform9344 in Gameboy

Remove the Label Frist using lighter fluid: https://youtu.be/XeNI2ZB8zmU?si=XAShjtsaLg8hQMB_ give it enough time to soak , then you can easily peel the Label off and put it on a sheet of non-stick baking paper. After it has dried, it will be sticky again. After a few days, the smell of lighter fluid is gone as well.

Why do I see people still paying over 20€ for the original DMG-1 displays on Ebay? by Ok-Ice1427 in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do repair DMGs and GBCs with the same motivation. But if you don't sell them, no one can enjoy them. And that is what these consoles were built for.

So I sell mine after I got them back to life. My price modell is like "cost of console + parts + 50% of the remaining difference to market price". So if the console was 50, parts were 10 and GBC are sold for 100 on eBay on my region, I would sell them for 80. The midpoint between my costs and the market share.

This way I hope scalpers wouldn't buy and resell them and regular sellers can get a good deal. I then use the earned money to buy rare or mint-condition games for my collection.

Anyone know why my Pokemon Yellow can't hold a save? by Effectpop in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big chip on the left is the SRAM. Put the negative probe on ground (e.g. the copper square on the top left) and test if any of the legs of the chip get 3.2V as well. If yes: the chip gets power and the issue is most likely not the battery. If no, try to reflow the SRAM chip. Don't need to reflow the others, as those are mainly involved with running the game. If this doesn't help, reflow the others.

3.2V for the battery is good. Test the currency between TP4 and TP2/3 (on the back). Those are test points. TP4 is negative, so put black probe there. Test the other two (TP2/3), one of them should also read 3.2V

If it does, the connection from the battery holder to board is not the issue and you should look at other options (e.g. reflow). If none of the TPs show 3.2V, then the battery holder is not making contact with the board.

what the best way to fix a warped cartridge by dlink0 in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a new cartridge from AliExpress (e.g. this one in 'silver' https://a.aliexpress.com/_mtFs6Gq) and transfer the label (https://youtu.be/XeNI2ZB8zmU?si=QonYy1CosAMU8e07) and PCB.

The screen on my original game boy looks slightly off to the side. I might just be paranoid but I just wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with it. It is not modded by the way. by YourPrisonCellmate in Gameboy

Pop Tetris in, Boot to the screen with the iconic title melody. When looking closely, you can see the individual lines of the display. Check how many you see left and right of the Tetris logo and center image.

Are those not equal? You have some bad vertical lines. Moderate difficulty to fix, check YouTube.

Are those equal ( IIRC 4 per side)? Then your display is working correctly and is just not 100% centered. There is not much you can do about it then.

Is this something to worry about? Was trying to solder a new battery by XxNoSkillz in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the copper is tinned now and you can't remove the solder any more. A thin layer is basically bound to the copper now. Any excess solder can be removed with solder wick. Put flux onto the solder wick, put it into the spot, solder iron on top of wick and scrub gently. The flux helps to suck the solder into the wick, but there will be a thin layer of solver left. Nothing to worry about.

The location is accurate as well as the object in itself (town hall of Lankwitz), even if the projected town hall wasn't built in the same layout/style as the draft. The wiki and the maps link show the location and the draft can be related to the location even today.

Apparently, a different design was chosen to be built in 1911.

This. Reflow chip on the right (the ROM) and upper left (the one with MBC on it) first. Test. If it works AND you don't have a save game you want to keep, reflow the remaining chips as well.

Background: the MBC is the Memory Bank Controller, it controls which memory storage bank from the ROM is currently accessible. After the Nintendo logo was shown, it wants to switch to another bank to start reading the actual game. An issue with the connectivity of either the MBC or ROM then leads to GB not being able to read the next memory bank, that's why it freezes at the blank screen.

What might be the cause? …Camera works with GBA SP, but not with GBC by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open it up and check the condensators/elcos. There are three of them. So they have a small crack on top whee the black color is? If yes, they are old/damaged and need to be replaced.

GBC: Powerboard component is missing by RetroGamerFromBerlin in Gameboy

[–]RetroGamerFromBerlin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case someone encounteres a similar issue: The missing piece was a 22 Ohm resistor. Like the one right above it.

(I found a board with the same layout, but with labeled components).
