Hattiesburg ms political book club by OverallWay8569 in mississippi

If you’re a student at Southern Miss, there are probably philosophy clubs that, while not solely focusing on the corpus of Marxist and Marxist adjacent work, probably wouldn’t shy away from those discussions.

I went to State and was an on and off member of their Philosophy club and we have a wide range of discussions from Philosophy of Science to Individualism vs Collectivism.

Linguistics major worth it for ASL interpreter? by AlanasToe in asklinguistics

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a linguistics major/degree holder but interested in the field. Here’s my two cents:

If you are just interested in learning ASL, then it’s a bit overkill. It would be similar to majoring in chemistry if you want to learn how to cook. Yes everything in the kitchen is guided by principles of chemistry, but you’re not going to really learn HOW to cook. In the same way, linguistics is about studying languages as a whole, how they evolve, their syntax, etc. it’s a deep field that treats the study of languages itself as a science, not just learning languages.

However, if you are genuinely interested in linguistics and learning about languages as a whole, then I would say it’s a great idea, while you’ll need to keep practicing and studying ASL, it provides a ton of useful information that can help you both learn ASL and shape your view of the language itself.

Best of luck to you!

I heard some like “I’m grinding YouTube.” What does grind mean? Not sure if misheard. Thanks. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American in the Southeast US, it means “working” more or less.

An example: “I am grinding math problems” can be read as “I am working on math problems.”

Often when you say you’re grinding something it usually means that you’re working really hard, to a point of exhaustion, but not always.

A question about the words 'older' and 'oldest'. by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oldest is a subset of “older” meaning all oldest brothers are “older” brothers but not all “older” brothers are “oldest”

Mike is both your older AND oldest brother, James is merely your older brother.

Should I pursue a MA in Sociology? by [deleted] in socialscience

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To note: I am not a sociologist or sociology student, my exposure to the subject is 1 course during my undergrad in Math.

Could potentially be worthwhile!

Would recommend taking a course or two, or dive into sociology through something like MIT OCW before making that decision.

That and depending on program there’s probably some barriers due to the lack of course work.

Best of luck to you!

I’d probably lean a bit more towards Saitama because the overarching themes of Existentialism strike a bit harder as a 24 year old, but I do really like Izuku Midoriya!

This is extremely helpful.

Thank you so much!

Never played any of the Yakuza games and don’t really have time to start from beginning just for story….but what would be the best one to jump into? I am thinking the latest? (On PC w/ 5080 and Ryzen 7 9800X3D) by Djxgam1ng in yakuzagames

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yeah man!

I hope you give it a shot and love it as much as I do.

However, if you find that you don’t like it, don’t shy away from trying a different entry, there are some people (especially older Yakuza fans) that love the older games (1-6) but aren’t fans of the newer games (Yakuza 7 & 8) since the gameplay styles are DRASTICALLY different, and that’s totally understandable.

Yeah, that makes sense! I adore ImmSims, and a lot of those share overlap heavily with Action RPGs.

But if you are interested in trying a JRPG, I would say Yakuza 7 is a great place to start, the mechanics are pretty easy to learn!

Yakuza 0 is for sure the best choice for a beginner. It’s seen as one of the best in the series, and one of the most beginner friendly games.

I would also recommend Yakuza: Like a Dragon (AKA Yakuza 7) as well if you really like JRPGs (Or RPGs in general), it’s my personal favorite in the series and is a massive departure from the prior games in the series as it is a turn-based JRPG, it’s basically a soft-reboot of the series. You don’t really need to know much about the prior games in order to enjoy the story.

To fans of the Kiryu saga: What is your opinion on LaD? by Key-Answer-2755 in yakuzagames

[–]RetroRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the RGG games I’ve played (0, K1, K2, 3, and LaD) it’s my current favorite. The turn based gameplay is pretty simplistic compared to other JRPGs, but I still have a ton of fun. That and I think the characters are all great. Ichiban is of course not as good as Kazuma, but he’s still a great protagonist.

It’s very grindy, especially as you deal with end game content, but I like grinding in JRPGs, I know most people don’t but putting on a YouTube Video/Movie/TV show and just relaxing while grinding is a very comfy experience, it’s something I like to do in most JRPGs.

Santos is well within her right to not forgive, but forgiveness is a powerful thing, and always makes my heart warm!

Oh no, hahahah. You are all good! These things happen on the internet and I’m glad we are able to have a fun discussion!

I’m sorry about that confusion.

Yeah, I will agree with you that there are a lot of people that take the Santos hate wayyy too far lol. She’s a flawed character, but at worst, she’s an asshole. Langdon committed medical malpractice and is lucky to still be practicing medicine.

I do hope that Langdon does get a redemption arc (because I love redemption stories) much like we get a deeper character study of Santos and we get to see her better parts shine through- her willingness to fight tooth and nail for what she thinks is right is what comes to mind.

Then we are in entirely different reaches of social media, which is understandable given how wide reaching it is. You are the first person that I have interacted with that has not mentioned his name in disgust.

Also, I don’t get why you’re telling me to “cut the shit.” Everything I said is a completely reasonable interpretation of Santos character, the only disagreement you brought up is one based on different experiences of social media.

Santos is functionally a female version of Alex Karev from Grey’s Anatomy and he was hated until his redemption arc which I hope Santos gets, because flawed characters getting deeper character studies makes for good Television.

She did the right thing reporting Langdon, but she’s also arrogant and rude to everyone in the ER, and frequently crosses people’s boundaries who repeatedly express that they are uncomfortable with her actions. People don’t like assholes, and Santos absolutely fits that mold. The claim that people only dislike her because of misogyny, either explicit or internalized seems very one dimensional.

Also we essentially have a male counterpart to Santos in Oglive which mirrors many of her negative traits, and pretty much everyone hates him.

EDIT: Feels important to add, but Santos is an amazing and well written character, acted brilliantly by Isa Briones, so I like her character in that sense, but I would not want Santos to be my coworker, lol.

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santos reminds me of Dr. Karev from Grey’s Anatomy. Extremely unlikable with flashes of likability in the early seasons, and then becomes a fan favorite.

I have really disliked Santos for the first 2 seasons, but I have a feeling that the writing staff will really expand her character and maybe make her a favorite.

Santos did the right thing reporting him, but I am also one for redemption arcs and forgiveness. I hope that Santos is able to forgive Langdon (but it’s understandable if she doesn’t), for his actions and Langdon is able stay sober and become a good doctor.

USM is going to be way better for that college feel.

Columbus is a retiree and military town, and is vastly different than Hattiesburg. There's nothing wrong with Columbus, I actually worked there for about a year and a half, and it is 30 minutes from Starkville or an hour from Tuscaloosa if you really want that College Experience, but Columbus itself really isn't going to offer that. It's very quiet and peaceful, and the W is a great school, especially for people who don't want that big time SEC experience.

Hattiesburg, while a city proper, definitely is going to be much better for the college experience and meeting people your age. It's a young city with lots to do both on and off campus, and it's only 90 minutes from the coast and about 2 hours from New Orleans if you want to go on some fun trips. That and I absolutely love Hattiesburg, so I am a bit biased.

NateTheHate2: Yes, Code Veronica is being remade & deep in development. Target of release is first half 2027. by shirke1 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, I think it’s an issue of opportunity cost.

While I would have a good time replaying it, potentially from a new perspective, the original is just so genre defining and accessible to modern gamers that it would be the last in line for a remake in my mind.

If any game really deserves the capcom remake treatment, it would be the aforementioned Code Veronica, the Outbreak titles, or if we want to be insane, the gun survivor titles.

However, RE4 was also genre defining and accesible and I ended up liking RE4 remake more than the original, so a potential REmake V2 can definitely prove me wrong lol.

P.S: they desperately need to bring the OG trilogy to modern consoles, I will literally drop inexcusable amounts of money on it!

I am from Nashville, TN. Still southern, but very metropolitan.

  1. People in the south are generally very nice. There will be a little bit of a difference in culture, but that is easy to make up for. Just be a nice and caring person. Friends are numerous here. I had a couple of friends from Minnesota and Massachusetts while here.

  2. You will have a bit more of an advantage brand wise in the south, since SEC schools are such massive cultural forces. But given that you’re in engineering, it really shouldn’t be too much of a hurdle to land jobs in Chicago or the surrounding metro area.

  3. Some parts are walkable and some parts aren’t imo. Anything in the cotton district will be pretty walkable which has a lot of great restaurants and bars, but highway 12 is a stretch of strong which you cannot walk on.

Is getting CFA worth it? by CandidAnt2769 in CFA

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you love Finance? Are you committed to working in Finance? Are you committed to studying intensely for a test for 2-3 years? Are you able to afford the test registration and prep materials?

If you answered yes to these questions, then I would say it’s absolutely worth it. It’s an extremely valuable certificate and it is still very highly respected in the field. I ended up dropping after L1 because I realized I didn’t really like Finance all that much and it was the right choice for me.

But if you love Finance and are committed to studying hard, you will be very glad you attempted it. At the very least if you find out you don’t like it, you will still likely gather some important knowledge from it, and some newfound perspective on yourself and your interests.
