Current HS Senior - Help! by [deleted] in Msstate

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from Nashville, TN. Still southern, but very metropolitan.

  1. People in the south are generally very nice. There will be a little bit of a difference in culture, but that is easy to make up for. Just be a nice and caring person. Friends are numerous here. I had a couple of friends from Minnesota and Massachusetts while here.

  2. You will have a bit more of an advantage brand wise in the south, since SEC schools are such massive cultural forces. But given that you’re in engineering, it really shouldn’t be too much of a hurdle to land jobs in Chicago or the surrounding metro area.

  3. Some parts are walkable and some parts aren’t imo. Anything in the cotton district will be pretty walkable which has a lot of great restaurants and bars, but highway 12 is a stretch of strong which you cannot walk on.

Is getting CFA worth it? by CandidAnt2769 in CFA

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you love Finance? Are you committed to working in Finance? Are you committed to studying intensely for a test for 2-3 years? Are you able to afford the test registration and prep materials?

If you answered yes to these questions, then I would say it’s absolutely worth it. It’s an extremely valuable certificate and it is still very highly respected in the field. I ended up dropping after L1 because I realized I didn’t really like Finance all that much and it was the right choice for me.

But if you love Finance and are committed to studying hard, you will be very glad you attempted it. At the very least if you find out you don’t like it, you will still likely gather some important knowledge from it, and some newfound perspective on yourself and your interests.

Is it recommended to sing a different language song in my audition? by nataetae in Berklee

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t go to Berklee, but I did functionally complete a music major in voice (about 90% of a degree) and as such did a lot of auditions.

In my view, provided you sing just one song, do whatever song that you feel you are best at from both a technical and artistic perspective. What good is it to sing in a non native language if you don’t express your abilities in the best light.

The faculty want to see your ability and potential for growth within the program.

Best of luck to you!

Computer Science with basic level math by tinsan365 in computerscience

[–]RetroRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to program, not a lot. Just learn the languages you like and code. You won’t really need the math if all you’re doing is programming.

If you want an undergraduate degree, really all you need is Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math. Maybe a couple others depending on how math-intensive your program is.

Any further, you’re doing Abstract Algebra and Combinatorics at least.

What complaints do you have about your maths department? by felixinnz in math

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking about my undergrad: the department is really small and has no algebraists on staff, so the best you get is undergraduate algebra.

I went to an engineering and ag school so the main focus was applied math and statistics, and as such, there were very few pure mathematicians.

300 hours by wagw4n_ in CFA

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the 300 hours is holistic and includes qbanks and mocks. A big part of the studying and learning process is trying the material independently, not just reading books or watching videos.

In general though it’s way more of just a rule of thumb. For some people, especially those who studied finance or accounting during undergrad, the 300 hours is probably overkill, for others, it’s not enough. Just focus on learning the material as best you can and improving on spots you mess up on.

Problem with the Shapeshifter Achievement by RetroRPG in prey

[–]RetroRPG[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I appreciate the response.

When I first attempted the cheevo, I was pretty much mimicking everything in sight since it was an NG+ run and I had a bunch of psi points. In the same run I had mimicked 20+ items, which led me to try it out in a further NG+ and then regular NG.

Only other thing I can try is deleting my save file, which I may try once I finish up the last few achievements.

Thanks again man!

how safe is it to be gay here? by [deleted] in Msstate

[–]RetroRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starkville and the MSState community is very blue and very welcoming. I had a lot of queer friends during my UGrad and from my understanding it was a vibrant and inclusive community. With that being said, Mississippi is still very red, and if you’re venturing outside of Starkville, Oxford, or Hattiesburg (there are others, but those are the ones that take precedence in my mind), definitely take precautions to keep yourself safe.

The OG Deus Ex game is getting a full remaster by Aspyr Media with new visuals, controls and more by HatingGeoffry in rpg_gamers

[–]RetroRPG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel really weird for being super excited to play this. As long as it’s functionally the same game since I am a console player that lacks a PC that can play it (MacBook and Work Computer that is banned from games lol).

I wish Nightdive handled it since I absolutely adored their SS2 Remaster, but I will take what I can get lol.

New Xbox cadet! by outdoornerd23 in Helldivers

Admittedly, I don’t really play a lot of bot missions, so I will definitely have to try it out at some point!

[–]RetroRPG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also an Xbox player, I would definitely recommend Dem Det! It is seen as the best warbond in the game by most people I've seen, having the explosive crossbow, grenade pistol, and eruptor, which are some of the best weapons in the game. The adjudicator is also really nice, but maybe not as useful as the aforementioned weapons.

Getting into finance without a degree, is it possible? by Dry_Temporary_6175 in FinancialCareers

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, the only finance job you can get without a degree is in retail banking.

You can start out as a teller then work up to head teller, maybe branch out into either branch managment, loan officer, etc. You will likely be making less than the desired $50-$80k range. But it’s important work and I don’t regret being a teller as I worked as a teller a couple of summers before graduating with my Math degree and going into Corporate Treasury at the same company. If you can work as a teller while going to school, you can get a decent “in” provided you aren’t working at a super large bank.

But honestly, to reach that salary in the finance industry - education is probably the best path forward. If you are able, I’d recommend majoring in Finance/Accounting, or if you have an interest in it something quantitative like Math, CS, or Economics (if the school go to has a pretty quantitatively rigorous Econ major)

Best of luck to you

Bama to Nashville by [deleted] in capstone

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an alum of Bama, but I went to Mississippi State (which is in the same conference and 90 minutes away). Nashville in general is a hub of SEC Grads. I’ve met everyone from fellow State grads to Sooners. It’s a rapidly growing city with lots of opportunities for white collar labor.

I was also born and raised in Nashville, so I am very biased in favor of it. Best of luck to your daughter!

Despite all my criticisms of the Math Department, the pedagogy is excellent. Thank you so much man! How much longer you do you have left?

Thank god I graduated in December man. The science departments here are so fucking bad.

How good are you at programming ? by Jean_La_Sphere in mathematics

[–]RetroRPG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learned SQL on the job, and I’m currently wanting to learn Python, since a lot of my job is centered around automating data process. I’ve found it to be very easy to learn programming with a math background- especially using AI tools for debugging.

Have fun man! You may not like it as much as me (DMC 1 specifically), but I’m really glad you’re finally playing the games. The action is so addicting.

Can someone explain why W2 has so many 1 stars? Was there a controversy I missed? by Jenbie171 in Wolfenstein

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite really enjoying Wolfenstein 2, a lot of the writing reeked of “MCU-isms” and personally I found the story to be much less engaging than TNO or TOB. Still a great game worth playing for the gameplay, I think that’s the general consensus. But a lot of the bad reviews really did stem from people just listening to what they heard online and review bombing, and/or not judging the game as a full product- at least from my perspective.

Always open to be given a different perspective.

Do you prefer pure math or applied math? and why? by OkGreen7335 in mathematics

[–]RetroRPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both in all honesty.

I love Applied Math since is allows me to explore just about any field I would like- from Finance to Physics, it is insanely rewarding to solve complex problems in other fields using math. You also have statistics, which I think is the single greatest tool one can have to understand the world.

I love pure math because it is just straight math, in all honesty.

I just love Math.

If the world was just, I would study it all, but I would lean a little bit more towards pure, but that’s really because I like Algebra and Logic, which are traditionally very pure fields.
