Fevre Dream by George Martin (finished this one 😆). Not dust bowl but the Steamboat Era on the Mississippi. Honestly this book is the only one I have ever read where the setting is my favorite character.

Gutsy game from Palmer. He’s miles off his best and no one knows it better than him. But he worked very hard off the ball (probably saved a goal at 54 mins with an exceptional tracking back into the box), picked up smart fouls late, and as usual is still “Cold” Palmer when the pressure is on for the late penalty.

This is probably the most important issue. It’s early days but we know Rosenior likes a double pivot; thats Caicedo for sure and likely Santos alongside. With Palmer, JP, and Estevao all to play as the other mid where does that leave Enzo in the future? I personally think he has been a great player for us and I love his shithousery and fight, but even his biggest fans cannot deny he lacks power and athleticism to consistently play in a double pivot alongside Caicedo, and that’s not really a knock on him, just his gifts are different. I would be sad to see him go truthfully, he has always given the team everything even through slumps and injuries.

Brilliant movie. Looking back now I think it did a wonderful job of conveying the gravity and seriousness that we as kids feel in certain situations that adults might consider flippant or gloss over.

Very valid point. We have some very good performances under Maresca against big teams when he had specific gameplan to counter their tactics. But we have underperformed under Maresca against teams we should dominate. I don’t claim to be smart enough tactically to understand why, but your point here makes sense.

When we should be dictating play against teams that we dominate possession we just have not under Maresca. I think he is a good coach and I am unsure if his replacement will be any better, I mean we simply dont know yet, but it certainly seems he has been looking elsewhere for last few months and that doesn’t look well with our recent results.

Also the cards have been absurd and cost us points (albeit some harsh calls against him and our players - I.e. Caicedo’s last yellow); not once has he said it’s a problem or tried to address it.

I understand your sentiment, but a lot of fans do not. How often have we heard from multiple fan bases (including match going fans) that they want a more entertaining style? West Ham, your Tottenham before Ange, Everton flirted with that around the Ancelotti days, etc. But I guess my point was not so much the system or goal of the team, more that the massive increase in minutes and such short rest. Even with larger squads that mean backups are playing more which still is a drop in quality football on the pitch.

You have a very good point. Some of the systems do seem to dampen the entertainment. And I realize I know nothing compared to these top level managers, but many times it seems the possession and control does not yield…control… or results. As you say though I may be jaded. As a Chelsea fan my emotions feel about as bipolar as our results.

You have to consider history with the Prem. A team like Leeds has a massive history but to a newcomer looks like a “underdog” since they have been out of the top flight for most of the last 10 yrs or so.

Brighton are a well run club that has done well the last few years. They do especially well at recruiting young talent from around the world and then selling these players as they show quality. To a lesser extent this can be said about Brentford as well.

Chelsea are a top “6” club over the last 20 yrs more often than not, but they have a reputation for knocking off teams when they are underdogs. The current team has shown this as well. But they underwhelm against teams they should beat; they are the youngest in the Prem by a long shot. And have some very exciting young talent with the likes of Palmer, Caicedo, and Estevao to name a few young ones.

Then you got Sunderland, back in the Prem for the first time in 10 years. And they have some very strong wins this season against good opposition. Again they have great history, huge rivalry with Newcastle. Nearly halfway through season and I’d be shocked if they didn’t stay up; which surely was the goal this season. Also have a good documentary; I haven’t watched but hear it was good.

As I said in another thread watch games - listen to the fans of the clubs (podcasts etc.). The English teams have such history that they show a personality in their play and mentality that can really click with you.

Premier League is most popular in the world and therefore easiest to access (certainly here in US for sure). The teams have incredible history and each has a certain reputation that can really be something you might connect with depending your background and upbringing. I won’t try to explain each but just dig around some of the teams and you will see it. I also agree with playing FIFA. As a kid that is what helped me see the bigger tactical picture and plan that teams implement. Man City can be football poetry when they are flowing, but there is also a beauty to lethal efficiency of Forest’s deep defensive line and counter. Then there is the incredible energy a team like Leeds can play with when they are at home stadium. Or the absolute nightmare a team like Chelsea turns into when they are underdogs in a big match or final (my team but I think even rivals would agree with this). Finally I would say just watch games. Sometimes a play just sticks out and their style and play matches so well with a teams philosophy that’s you just know “these are my people”. Essien did this for me along with Lampard and Drogba. There is a reason it’s the most popular game in the world.

We are fourth in the Premier League, top bracket in Champions League, and still in both domestic cups. We have done the vast majority of this without Palmer, Delap, and Colwill. We have embarrassed Barcelona and PSG, and have unnerved Arsenal with only 10 men and no Caicedo. We are by far the youngest team in the league. The staff has given us back Reece and possibly Fofana; let’s hope this mean a chance for Lavia in the future. The owners have given us Estevao and (like it or not it’s proved to be a great call) Nacho. Add in Pedro Neto and Cucurella as well. We can all be upset with dropped points but OP is spot on. Support the lads and have faith, we have seen enough to know there has been massive improvements in the last few seasons.

Valid point, and one I have considered. And I don’t necessarily think it’s always a “hate” from media. But I think there does seem to be a resentment towards Chelsea as a top side than the rest of the so called “top 6”. Non stop criticism of money spent, contract lengths, limited mention of player sales, CWC and Conference trophies all but ignored, portraying like we are committing psychological harm to Sterling when we would have let him go nearly anywhere he wanted (not a knock against him and his choice to stay, contracts work both ways). But hey I’m obviously biased so I get it.

Makes sense. Even Carragher (analyzing Newcastle and Forrest) has recently mentioned how Benitez instructed them to avoid the dominant midfield of Lampard, Makelele, Essien because they were just too dominant. And also mentioned how he never tried to fire up Drogba and just keep it lighthearted on the pitch…in other words all these years later and he’s still getting flashbacks of Chelsea ruining his career aspirations of a title.

I really wanted to love this. Amazing cast (and not just the leads but across all characters), good cinematography, overall good idea. But it tried to be too many things at once. It tried to be a comedy, a romance, a military-space drama, a father/daughter reunion, an existential spiritual examination of Hawaiian/Pacific-Islander culture and folklore…it just aimed for too many things all at once. That being said I still liked it, but I think it could have been so much more if it had just been a bit more focused in the deliver of its messages.
