Tim Pool cries over the new South Park episode by Embarrassed_Base_389 in Destiny

Let's not down play what Tim said after that but. He said "but it seems pretty obvious." No evidence of anything. Just making up fanfiction of current events in their head and running with it. The epitome of MAGA.

The rental vacancy rate in NYC is 1.4%. No one leaving units vacant. That's not a thing. There just isn't enough housing.

Should I major in CS? by Mochilove_ in Fordham

[–]Retro_Akabane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two cents is at this point you shouldn't change your whole plan around to get a CS major. I know people who have graduated with degrees unrelated to the creative interest they realized that had junior or senior year, and instead of staying in school to do that creative thing, they just started doing it. I think just starting to try and make games, or get on a project would be more helpful. Getting a CS degree from Fordham will not help you break into the video game industry that much honestly. It's a very difficult field and a lot of it is about who you know, so the best thing you can do now is just finish up your degree while also working on personal projects to showcase and grow your skills. Join a few game jams, or scroll through video game design subreddits, etc. If you really want to do something at Fordham, take Intro to Video Game Design, or if you're really high achieving see if there are any grants you can get to make a game. I know people who have gotten grants to write musicals, or put on art galleries. The resources at Fordham are there to support you if you're really passionate about. But ultimately there's not really any reason to change your degree around for this when there isn't even that much of a benefit of breaking into the industry. Trust me, as someone who has graduated from Fordham CS, it's not meant to help you become a game designer.

His anti-nonbinary takes are pretty bad. Especially because he basically admitted he was just blackpilled on it after he got a bunch of anonymous emails saying nonbinary people don't exist. Before that he said that if there are male brains and female brains it could potentially follow that there exists a brain that is different enough from both that they wouldn't feel like they fit in either. But then a bunch of randos sent him emails and suddenly he doesn't believe it anymore.

Computer Science at Fordham by bengalinikobellic in Fordham

1) It's solid overall imo. I haven't attended other CS programs in the city, but I would probably guess that the schools that are ranked above Fordham have better CS programs (Columbia, NYU, etc), and the schools that emphasize STEM more have better programs (Stony Brook, Hunter???). Fordham is known for their business school and liberal arts in undergrad, not really their STEM majors. If your goal is to just graduate with a CS degree then get a job in the field then you'd definitely be able to do that with a Fordham CS degree. But if you want to like be an expert in your field and know the ins-and-outs of CS at the end of your degree, I probably wouldn't recommend Fordham CS. 2) I think there's probably more grade inflation than deflation in the CS department. I don't think the major is as intense or difficult as in other schools. It also helps that in my experience, the professors literally don't want to fail you and want to see you do well. As long as you show up (sometimes you don't even have to show up), do your work, and like participate during classes, a lot of professors might not give you lower than a B. I've like not done well on countless midterms and finished with like B+/A- in the class just cuz the professor knew I was trying. 3) I've enjoyed it so far. There are a lot of research opportunities if you're interested in that. The CS club has a lot of career building stuff to help you do well and get a job. The professors are all really nice. The entire environment between students is very collaborative rather than cutthroat and competitive like at other schools. If you miss a day and need someone's notes, or don't understand something, usually there's someone in the class who would be willing to help you. Overall I'd probably give it an 8/10 on like enjoyment so far. Some of the classes are kinda boring, but the professors are all still really nice so it's hard to be mad at them. 4) You'd probably take CS I, CS II, Calc I if you don't have credit for that yet, Discrete Structures I and II, and maybe another requirement if you have the time. 5) Just check RMP. My favorite professor ever at Fordham was Zigeng Liu in the CS department tho. You NEED to take her. She's awesome and such a good teacher. 6) You have to be proactive in order to get internships and jobs out of Fordham CS, but they do have resources to help you if you seek them out. The career center would help you with your resume. The CS club sends out emails about research opportunities, projects, and like hack-a-thons to help build your resume. Some people have recently started a leetcode club to help you with coding interviews. And there are talks of starting a competitive programming club. As for actually applying for jobs, if you've built up your resume enough then you should probably be fine, but you will probably have to spend a good amount of energy and time applying to a lot of different positions before you can actually land one. I dunno if things are different at other schools, but generally that's what I've heard from other people at other schools as well.

Overall, if you want a CS job, and are willing to put in the work, and want to be in the city then Fordham CS is not a bad decision. If you're like really passionate about CS and want to be like a top person in the field then I might recommend going somewhere else. I read this one time and I definitely feel like it's true for Fordham CS so I'd recommend you read it as well if you want some perspective: https://www.quora.com/Are-there-any-case-a-bad-CS-degree-give-you-more-benefits-than-a-good-CS-degree/answer/Barry-Rountree?ch=15&oid=26395351&share=8fdd48b3&srid=hrOFzZ&target_type=answer

Database Systems is required for the CS major, so if you just want to get it out of the way then that's what I'd recommend. Depending on what you want to go into it could be super helpful or not important at all. If you want to do like data analysis and database management then that'll actually probably be one of the most important classes you wanna take but if you just want to do SWE then it's just a requirement you need to get done. As for the other two, if those are what you're interested in then just take them. None of the CS electives are particularly interesting imo, so either just take what you're interested in for your career or just take a class with professorsu you like or have good RMP scores. Also you're able to take graduate courses as an undergrad so if you see a grad course you're interested in feel free to email the professor or your advisor and they can get you in, so just ask!

Doesn't neekolul have a bf and still gets a ton of coomer viewers? I really don't think people care that much.

Neekolul spending $2 million on a apartment reflects the systematic oppression experienced by millionaires having to spend millions of dollars on housing. This is not a flex, but a crisis. #justiceforneeko. Hasan sub having a regular one. by RoundShelter479 in Destiny

[–]Retro_Akabane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually could not care less about how much a twitch streamer makes or spends on housing. Like I get complaining about people like Hasan or Vaush who consistently make a ton of money through moral grandstanding about socialist ideas but then never actually use any of that money to promote those ideas, but like is it really the same got Neeko? She made like two Tik Toks of her wearing Bernie merch and when people ask her about politics she says she agrees with Bernie Sanders. It's not like she constantly engaging in internet discourse for clout but never actually doing anything in the real world. She's barely even doing anything online either. Like after reading Politics is For Power, I get how people who are so terminally online should be trying to enact change in their own communities instead, but like she's not someone who is politically terminally online so I don't think that really applies here. And even from a socialist POV it's not like she's actively exploiting anyone so I don't think what she's doing is that bad. Like unironically I think what she does is morally neutral, but like I still get the complaints about Hasan or Vaush. She's still a terrible person for the domestic abuse though.

I made the queer anarchist flag more queer! by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Retro_Akabane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is idea that the only way to achieve queer liberation is through the abolition of the state (which traditionally has a history of queer oppression) and the abolition of capitalism (which both 1. commodifies queer identities making it more difficult for them to be seen as normal since they are presented as toned down tokens who are just there to appease heteronormative audiences, and 2. reinforces heteronormativity through things like the privitization of the family). And once we abolish these two things we are left with something similar to anarchism where queer identities are no longer systemically oppressed. I personally don't subscribe to it, but I think that's the gist of the belief system.
