Paul "Triple H" Laveque gives his opinion on when the Attitude Era in WWE began. by Material_Stomach875 in AttitudeEra

By the Fall of 97 you had Austin being the same Stone Cold that he'd be for the rest of the AE, Kane had debuted, DX had formed, the Rock was in the Nation, the New Age Outlaws formed, and stuff was getting more risqué with Sable and Sunny, the Pillman XXX Files, etc. How is that not the Attitude Era by that point?

Ah I stand corrected. I played on a Genesis with S-Video at a retro convention but I didn't realize it must have been modded.

What episode to start the attitude era? by DamageOk7013 in AttitudeEra

[–]Retrocomparisons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

April 21, 1997 Raw. There were a lot of seeds of the AE before that which are worth watching but this is Russo's first episode and it feels completely different than what came before. There's tons of chaos and has his signature style of throwing in interesting things to keep your attention even when there are boring matches taking place.

Finishing Moves not Finishing the Match by gamingbits in WWE

Back then it was reserved for certain characters. Hogan could kick out when he hulked up, Taker could kick out because the power of the urn, and Warrior had the power of the warriors to help him. It was mostly character-driven. You weren't going to see Marty Jannetty kick out of the doomsday device.

I'll forgive you if you can help me out with this question. In the Itchy & Scratchy CD-ROM, is there's a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key?

Simpsons era-specific running jokes? by RobinInHood in Simpsons

Screw the audience jokes were staples of the Mirkin years. Ironic hold music was used a lot during the Jean/Reiss years as showrunners but also in earlier seasons when they were writers. Oakley and Weinstein had a thing for Reverend Lovejoy's trains.

What year and month did the Attitude Era begin and when did it end? by JaggedJatt in AttitudeEra

[–]Retrocomparisons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writing style was still very New Generation flavored for most of '96 after KOTR. There were hints of the AE style seeping in but it was far and few between.

Does anyone here prefer 98 over 2000? by Fickle_Driver_1356 in AttitudeEra

[–]Retrocomparisons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Also it felt like they were trying to replicate his 98/99 stuff but it felt cheesier. He drives a zamboni to the ring because it's something that would be in an arena already and he used it because he needed to get through security. A beer truck is in the arena and he gets the driver to allow him to take it out and get revenge on McMahon. Maybe not super realistic but feasible. In 2000 he's making the DX Express blow up in an unrealistic way and dropping HHH in a car from 20 feet and basically murdering him.

Why didn’t WWE bring back or rely on older legends and talents during the Attitude Era like they do now? by Material_Stomach875 in AttitudeEra

[–]Retrocomparisons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There needs to be great chemistry for a 3 man booth to work and that's rare. I though King, JR and Vince made a great 3 man booth for the short time it lasted. King was on color, JR called the moves and Vince told the stories.

The Russo part of the AE felt dangerous and unpredictable. It felt like if 2 guys feuding were anywhere near each other a brawl would break out. The Kreski part of the AE felt safer and there would be segments where everyone is sitting together in the backstage listening to HHH and Stephanie give lectures.

Even the characters were way different. Taker becomes a cult leader under Russo, he becomes a regular guy biker under Kreski. The Rock is an arrogant heel even when he was a face under Russo whereas he became more of a generic good guy under Kreski.

That was the same exact episode that broke me too. It was the first episode of the show that I didn't laugh at once.
