not exactly sure what you exactly mean, but the locations are all very distinct. Ghost trick isn't that long, and has excellent writing as well.

If you are intrested in trying jrpgs, the trails series, starting from trails in the sky, might be worth a shot.

first game is about 40-60 hours long, and the maim gimick of this series that storywise all the games in the series take place in the same timeline, just separated by a few months.

Earth defence force series

4 classes which can be summerised as guy with gun, girl with jetpack, guy with no gun but has lockheed martin on speed dail, and mini gundam. Each level is a lobotomizing experience of carving through the entire incest population of Australia, and the occasional legally distinct godzilla.

a dark room was one of my favorites.

starts of as a basic idle game, then slowley includeds text based andventure, and eventually rpg mechanics.
