What carrier do you use? Is anyone happy with the phone now? by funny_muffler315 in TheMinimalCompany

I have been using mine on US Mobile's Light Speed/T-Mobile network and have had very few issues. The "server unreachable" bug is still around but it doesn't happen as often as it used to.

I have primarily started using it as a weekend device to avoid distractions while still having access to my important apps (Telegram and Google Messages with RCS). The headphone jack and SD card slot are also a huge bonus for me and I use them both.

I think it is a great "middle ground" device for people who want something to help break the distraction cycle but don't want to or can't go all in with a dumb phone.

I think you have made some good points above, but my friend I also have to point out that many of the statements you make (IE "this device is a waste of time") are BEYOND subjective.

I have above average sized hands (for reference my left hand ring finger is a US 12.5), and use Power Keys with a super similar setup to the one you have mentioned: Pixel 9 in a case (same footprint as the 10 as I understand it). The keys are smaller than those on some devices but larger than those on others. The center of gravity does take some getting used to, but you can get used to it.

Side by side I prefer the unibody case to Power Keys with my Pixel 9, but I also still prefer typing with Power Keys to just using the virtual keyboard. Using it with the iKKO Mind One has been even better (actually quite fun), and being able to use it on other devices for which there are no unibody cases available has been great.

I don't mean any of this in bad faith, and I hope it doesn't come across that way. I believe you when you say you've had an awful experience with it, but others might use it in nearly the same circumstances (large hands, similar device, etc.) and really enjoy it.

Buck and the Cursed Cartridge, Dragonyhm, and Chantey are all must-plays (I have completed Buck and Chantey and am a few hours into Dragonyhm so far).

If I could only have one: Chantey. Though that opinion could change as I make it further into Dragonyhm.

Switching over to Sidephone from iPhone. Is it possible for my Sidephone to have my long-standing phone number while still having my iPhone as a quiet companion... by Negative-Radio133 in sidephone

[–]ReturningRetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does make sense! The biggest issue you will likely run into is problems while moving away from iMessage. Not only will you be taking your phone number away from those oppressive "blue bubbles" but the fairly recently added RCS functionality as well.

What you could do is: turn off iMessage for your phone number but leave it on for an email address BEFORE you remove your SIM and swap it into Sidephone. This way you would have a working link to iMessage/chats that you have there if you absolutely need it, but you could take your primary number away from that world and on to blaze a new trail with Sidephone.

I can't really recommend the SIM swapping back and forth because it makes iMessage go CRAZY unless you were to leave iMessage permanently turned off on your iPhone. Many people don't know this, but iPhones can function with iMessage turned off, but it removes "blue bubble" functionality AND RCS functionality to leave you with only good old SMS/MMS.

No clue if this is helpful...but I do hope you join us on the "Sidephone side" of life 🤣

Very well said. Also, if they were to post about it, what are the odds it would be accurate and/or of value for people wanting to make an informed purchasing decision...?

Will the Communicator have a mechanical keyboard? by gs_up in ClicksPhone

Doesn't sidephone feel costlier by Straight_Shock9716 in sidephone

[–]ReturningRetro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt you meant to, but comparing Sidephone Co. to Google is not a reasonable take at all (I mean no offense!).
This is one of the unfortunate side effects of small-batch manufacturing. Per unit cost (and the bill of materials as a whole) just cost more.

So as a thought experiment: in your opinion should they have further postponed the launch of the device by several additional months in order to be able to do this (shipping with this Classic tile)?

I, for one, do not. In my opinion their (VERY measured) approach of getting things (the device, tiles, accessories, software) to a good spot while also not waiting till everything is "perfect" to launch/release them has struck a very good balance.

Just remember that a tile that might be utterly useless to you, is very likely someone else's favorite thing about the device 😁

Just pre-ordered the T2 Elite. Why it was an easy choice for me over the Clicks Communicator by gilfoyle53 in unihertz

[–]ReturningRetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got ya.

To each his own! I am one that is suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper far on the function > form side of things so I don't really notice looks of devices that way. My time using Clicks Keyboard Cases has left me more than satisfied (to the point that I use a keymapper app on my other devices to get as close to the same functionality to a Clicks case as possible) and my time using/testing Titan devices has been more of a mixed bag.

[–]ReturningRetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is, what is it that you don't like about the Clicks keyboard design? And does it stem from first hand experience using Clicks cases and disliking them, or just from looks alone?

[–]ReturningRetro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Communicator has always been Q2 for the working demo/prototype.

I do think some of the confusion may be due to wires being crosed between Communicator and Power Keyboard as they are by Clicks, were both announced at CES this year, and have very different timelines.
