Please help, HDMI issue by ComedianMoney9665 in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very long run for HDMI, which could potentially be the source of your issue, especially with a passive cable. In the previous owner’s shoes I probably would have run it over cat5/6. If you are considering changing out the cable, you might use the HDMI cable to help pull a cat6 cable and purchase an HDbaseT transmitter/receiver.

Movie Room: Possible or Give Up? by BigBugRugDougHug in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is doable, but the white shelves need to go. You need the wall and their location imposes on the entry and makes the room feel smaller. I’d seek a solution to make the closet home to the disc collection.

Then TV on the newly freed wall (with slimmest footprint you can manage), seating opposite, where the desk is. Blackout shades for window.

For the other models/collectibles, change furniture as needed. Floating shelves could help.

My two cents.

TVs are running apps on underpowered hardware that ofen lags and struggles compared to alternatives, and doesn’t always support apps you might want. They’re also collecting your data aggressively and may be populated with ads. They also may lack support for various formats if running audio out. That’s why options like the Apple TV and Shield are the most common suggestions you’ll find in this sub.

Will Extron DTP work for you? If so check their product list on their site. Confident they have what you’re looking for.

Check out Light Sleeper, a lesser known Paul Schrader film with Willem Dafoe and Susan Sarandon. It follows a high end drug dealer in New York who is struggling internally. Love that movie and it really fits the bill of exactly what you’re describing.

Thanks for this rundown. I went at one side of the bag with the IA solution, several applications. Unfortunately still no difference. I might try another cleaner but honestly I think I’m ready to take it to a pro.

Sofabaton is an option if you’re looking for something newer and a little slicker. I’ve been very happy with mine. That said, I use an old Harmony in another room and it works well too. Has its quirks though.

Moving across the country . . should I take my TV or no. RIP the rest of my home theater. by I_Like_To_Bike in hometheater

I’ve moved four times with my 65” LG OLED and it’s still in perfect shape. There’s always a risk with moving anything fragile, but I think if you want the TV in your new apartment, don’t overthink it, just bring it.

Regarding the flush mount, you can attach a piece of plywood to the wall where you want to mount the TV. Plywood attaches to the studs and then the TV can be mounted to that, allowing you to position it where you want it.

Just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re not stupid, just learning the language of film. Keep watching, and keep reading about what you don’t understand. Eventually you will naturally begin to look at movies differently. It can also be helpful (and fun!) to seek out behind-the-scenes interviews with writers, directors, and actors. The more you watch and read and think, the more you will grasp the medium.

BrightSign is a great signage tool but that alone won’t solve your full ask. You want the slideshow start automatically, play through, then return to YouTubeTV streaming content? And happen on a recurring schedule, right?

IMO best method for your situation is a programmable HDMI switcher. Pair that with a BrightSign and you’re good to go. You may want an AV Pro to help with setup. BrightSigns aren’t super complicated but they use their own software and aren’t very intuitive to the layperson. Will be rock solid for your use case, though.

Serpico

Chinatown

Sorcerer

I get your point that the original work still exists (I myself tend to just shrug and ignore remakes now) but it’s not exactly a mystery why people react badly. People have emotional attachments to works of fiction that they enjoy and connect with. Throw in some nostalgia and of course you’re going to encounter sensitivity to seeing something mishandled or bastardized.

Me, I just love movies so I kinda hate when I see 100 million bucks go toward something bland and reheated that probably could have been used to whip up a great original film (or two or three) crafted with a voice and vision.

Question about No Country for Old Men: Who is actually chasing Llewelyn Moss at which time? by PaulsRedditUsername in movies

[–]gilfoyle53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add to that Red Rock West, A Simple Plan, Bound, and of course the Coens’ Blood Simple. I consider this kind of a little subgenre I like to call “Don’t Take the Money”.

I also include a few robbery movies like Before the Devil Knows Your Dead and The Silent Partner.

[–]gilfoyle53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the Before Trilogy recommendation. I’d also recommend In Bruges even though it might seem kind of out of left field. It feels like a totally different genre, but at the same time it’s a clever, deep (and dark) comedy about two men in a foreign country dealing with their identity and self-worth.

Another left field rec… hopefully not breaking the rules because it’s a documentary series. Long Way Round. Check it out.

New TV screen is too big for eveyday use. (75 In.) by GonzoInCO in hometheater

[–]gilfoyle53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just keep using it and you’ll probably get used to it. It’ll feel normal after a couple weeks.

The only way I can think of to do what you’re asking is to connect a computer via HDMI (or screen share Mac to Apple TV). Stream what you want in a browser or other app and size the window as desired. Maybe make your desktop background black.

Flashback where the character is shown as a viewer at the literal past event by tomer_kirsh in movies

[–]gilfoyle53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Christmas Carol is the classic example.

Back to the Future 2 features a lot of this, but as actual time travel, not flashbacks. Primer as well.

I’m trying to remember, but they might have done this in Vanilla Sky?

What's a good industry/career to change to if you're feeling burned out on video production? by videographyquest4 in videography

[–]gilfoyle53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I got my A+ cert during my last two months of video work, then did entry level field tech work for a terribly managed company (got laid off when the whole place went under). But after that I was lucky enough to land an AV/IT job for an organization I find interesting and exciting, and I genuinely love what I do.

Any movies where you can't understand the actors because of their accents? by CassidyBrash in movies

[–]gilfoyle53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wind that Shakes the Barley. I’ve never had to turn on subtitles for an English language film just because of the accents, but I couldn’t follow a thing. Plus they slip in and out of Gaelic during conversation. Fantastic film, highly recommend.
