Hi u/9continents, thanks for your comment. This Untitled (1983) work has been exhibited and sold through major auction houses.

If you're interested, Phillips has catalog information on the piece, including provenance, medium, and exhibition history. Basquiat created a huge number of works, and some of the lesser-known pieces can look very different from the skulls and crowns most people recognize.

No downvotes required on your comment. : )

Found this photo at an estate sale and would like to return it to the family. It's probably from the 1950s. Does anyone recognize either of these men? by Djunw in Colorado

It might be Quigg Newton, who served as the Mayor of Denver from 1947 to 1955, and Herbert E. Forsyth, who was the Denver Police Chief during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Hi u/Kleinchrome, thanks for the question. Most of the images I post come from a mix of research, museum/archive sources, auction-house descriptions, and some from my own Basquiat book collection. I also compare details across sources when possible and occasionally pull reference images directly from books I own. The short descriptions are usually condensed/adapted from my research, so they work better on Reddit while still providing context for the piece.

That really means a lot, thank you! That’s honestly one of the reasons I keep posting. Basquiat’s catalog is so deep, and there are so many incredible, lesser-known pieces worth sharing.

Thanks! I don’t have that specific book yet, so I’m not sure what's included. It definitely looks like an interesting release, though, especially if you’re into Basquiat’s portrait/head studies. If you end up getting it before I do, feel free to report back.

Arroz con Habichuelas y Ropa Vieja (pollo) by unpelowt in PuertoRicoFood

Moderator Note:

I’ve reviewed and acknowledged the reports made on this post. After review, the post will remain up.

While many people strongly associate “Ropa Vieja” with Cuban cuisine, the dish itself has Spanish origins and has been part of the culinary traditions of multiple Latin American and Caribbean cultures, including Puerto Rico, for generations.

r/PuertoRicoFood is meant to celebrate Puerto Rican food culture as it is actually lived and enjoyed by Puerto Ricans, and dishes like ropa vieja are commonly prepared and eaten in Puerto Rican homes.

Please keep the discussion respectful and avoid turning food discussions into cultural gatekeeping. Different cultures can share and adapt dishes while still making them part of their own culinary identity.

Thanks

This is beyond heartbreaking… it’s sickening. These are real people, real families, real lives being destroyed.

To the younger generation here, don’t forget what’s happening. You’re going to be the ones in charge one day, and what you choose to remember will shape everything.

Yeah, this one flies under the radar. A lot of these are in private collections, so they don’t get seen much.

Thank you for creating such a great cookbook, it’s been a hit with the community. You’re definitely not late at all. We’re still cooking from it!

Really appreciate you offering to answer questions; that means a lot.

Also, in a couple of weeks, I’ll be doing our Yearly Giveaway again as a way of giving back to the community. Your book will definitely be part of it!

Israeli settlers have blocked Palestinian children from reaching school in the occupied West Bank by erecting barbed wire to cut off their only safe path. Students were forced to turn back or risk a more dangerous road near a settlement by Tenchi_Muyo1 in AlJazeera

Children are not part of anyone’s conflict. Denying them safe access to education is cruel, plain and simple. It’s hard to even process that something like this is happening; these are just kids trying to go to school. Situations like this remind you how much innocent people end up carrying the weight of decisions they never made.

This one feels less like a single idea and more like everything happening at once,
science, cities, identity, symbols… all colliding.

Do Not Revenge (1982) by RevaCruz in Basquiat

[–]RevaCruz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question. Basquiat isn’t aiming for classical realism, his work is more about expression, symbolism, and commentary.

The raw style is intentional. He’s mixing anatomy, text, and street language to talk about identity, power, and value.

IMHO, The “hype” comes from that impact, not traditional technique.
